About to turn on NBN FTTC, advice on modem/router for immediate use

House is expected to switch over to NBN this coming week and looking to be active ASAP.

I'm seeking a better modem/router than what iiNet will send me (for $50). While I'm more tech savvy than some, modems/routers are not my forte so seeking some advice here.

iiNet.
FTTC.
Minimum 50Mbs plan.
Not a VoIP user.
No extenders to be used, small enough house.
5 connections (two pc, two phone, smart tv).
~$200

Please and thank you.

Will edit if other details necessary

  • Why not try the iiNet supplied one and see if/where it's insufficient? Your requirements seem pretty low so it may be all that you need.

    • I have a current iiNet TG789 and to put it lightly, I would prefer something else

      • Why, though? Slow during torrenting? Wifi signal bad? Connection dropping out? - Let us know because this helps us recommend.

The NBN supplied connection device is a modem. Your looking for a router and your not going to get a better router for $50 bucks.

    • So what is better. For say, ~$200

TP-Link is best bang for your buck ~$200. TP-Link Deco M5 Mesh Whole Home WiFi Router or TP-Link Archer AX20 AX1800 Dual Band Wi-Fi 6 Router.

I got the m5 3 pack for Aussie BB FFTC. Just plugged them in went on the app and it worked straight away no issues

  • To my understanding, any routers that has bridge mode will work. You'd better check if your current router support bridge mode before you forking out money for a new router.

Nope not any router. iiNet have a requirement that VLAN Tagging (802.1q) on the router is set to number 2.

NBN connection device connects to the router with ethernet cable. Bridge mode on the router is not used on FTTC.

  • I was with iiNet for 17 years, all that time I used a fair amount of iiNet devices like BoB, BoB2 and Budii all were crap and not worth the plastic their case was made from. I upgraded from Budii to Asus rt68u bridged to the budii and nighthawk 4g. It had the side effect of improving my wifi 30 fold, no longer had Plex buffering issues.

I jumped ship to Aussie BB when NBN FTTC came online last month. The Asus router worked right away.

So I'd avoid isp supplied devices if you don't want the phone. The rt68u is a little more than you want to spend but I'm sure you can get something better than what iiNet would give you and not have the issues.

If I were you I'd look on the iiNet forums on whirlpool I'm sure it would be talked about on there.

  • Further to OP, is there good router for NBN fttc with vlan tagging ?

Realised late the current Telstra smart modem (gen1) not good enough as won't allow vlan tagging so looking for decent option to buy
