Ceiling Light Installation in Sydney

Hi all,

All my ceiling oyster light installed in my unit is too old. I tried to replace it by myself but I fail to drilling the hole by using Ozito hammer drill as the concrete ceiling is too solid i believe.

I given up install by myself now. I seriously consider to get electrician to installing for me if I can afford the installation cost. I just wondering where and how much I can get someone to install for me in Sydney South area?

Thanks!

  • You need a rotary hammer drill, Ozito is just too weak for the job. Or get a better brand.

    • Was gonna say you could rent one, but bunnings aren't letting you cause covid :P. Buying one on the other hand, they have no problem with…

Airtasker has between $120-200 to install one. Can put your details in, concrete roof etc and you will get a few bids but expect a competent electrician to charge around that

      • Wow, very expensive to install one light for $120 to $200…

Concrete ceiling with existing light installed. Oh need to do is drill the hole to install the new light.

      • Airtasker has between $120-200 to install one.

That's bullsh*t pricing, even if the parts are included.
Decent oyster lights can be had for under $40 each, and it'll take a skilled electrician all of 10 minutes at the most to mount and wire one.

I had 9 ceiling lights and one outdoor light (BYO parts) installed by an electrician for $300 all up.

    • OMG,already bought one for $99….too late for me now.

    • ….

  • Get a better drill, but DIY electrical work is a no on, so hire a electrician to come out and replace them all at once.

    • I loves too if I can afford!

DIY is pretty easy. There are plenty of vids on youtube by US and UK citizens.

        • No one said it wasn't easy, I said it was a no no in this country.

DIY wiring and you screw it up = no house insurance for example.

          • @JimmyF: "it was like that when I bought the house"

Are you using the right drill bit for concrete? You need a masonry bit.

    • I did!

      • Just making sure…

  • what's your budget, Aldi is having the rotary hammer drill for $99 tomorrow, coupling with the batter and charger kit for $40, correct size drill bit for $10-20 more and you're good to go. If you don't want to fight for stock tomorrow morning then I think bunning also has similar gear for sale to match Aldi too.

    • Many thanks for the information. I already got Ozito hammer drill and I really don't want to get another one.

this is the sds rotary hammer drill, completely different kind of beast. You can buy the kit, get the job done and return to Aldi, 60 days free return. If it doesn't work then you have a better case for returning
