waiting for AMD 4800H. AMD, yes!

    • +4

100% yes! If you don't NEED something now wait for the AMD laptops.

In say that however I am not optimistic that most OEMs will transition to ryzen within the next year, very few offerings at the moment and Intel has ruled this market segment for so long for any change to happen in a timely manner…

      • Why are ryzens worth waiting for?

        • +5

The new ryzens are smashing intel i7 and i9 cpus in benchmarks.

        • +1

They have almost DOUBLE the performance per watt. Just look up '4900 HS' on youtube.

      • what is good about the AMD laptops?

  • +8

Dell just announced a new XPS 15 as well as 17 coming soon.

    • Yeah the new ones like so awesome.

    • Yes, for anyone interested, these are the 2 new models

      • Last chance to get OLED option. Panels don't come in 16:10 and they never will

    • Don't bother even looking.

      From $3,699

Better buy a couple to maximise savings

    • when will it come to Australia?

      • Shipping in 7 days.

specs like that go for max 1400

Not in a slim, light and good quality machine like a XPS.

      • +5

have they really stepped up their quality? me and 2 other friends have had XPSes, a 2nd gen 13, 3rd gen 15, and another 4th gen 13.

while the exterior build quality was nice, all of us had nothing but non stop issues. most common were crazy coil whine, failing keyboards, and failing USB ports. Even if it was under warranty, getting it fixed over and over wasted so much time that i really wouldn't recommend it, especially for uni or work. feels like the XPS line is all style and no substance, especially at its price point.

        • Ive had mine for 6 months and so far everything has been great, not one problem.
          Ive got the i7, 32GB ram, 1TB SSD 7590.

        • +1

Yep, I had similar issues. Dell's quality has gone to the dogs. I wish I'd paid just a little more and bought a Thinkpad.

        • I've got a 9370 13", which is probably 2 years old. I've had one issue where the Realtek drivers for the sound card were rubbish and the sound kept crapping out - wasn't really Dell's fault. Apart from that zero issues. So good, I will happily buy another.

Friends did warn of issues with the 2016/2017 models, but I've had no issues. I've also had it apart to upgrade the drive, was easy enough to work on. Additionally, I've been running an external GPU over Thunderbolt with no issues.

4K touch screen was probably overkill for me - would rather have the longer battery life on the 1080 model.

      • +1

These are far from light, but they are a gorgeous machine.

  • +1

I got the 4K 1TB 2-in-1 model for $2999 on sale back in Feb, don't know if this is going to hold up well due to the new model but feel free to ask me anything about the machine in the meantime, seeing as OzB helped me find the right laptop for me. :)

    • How's the build quality on it, and the battery life after a few months? I`ve heard that the keyboard Dell uses in these models is pretty divisive as well.

      • +1

Build quality is great! The carbon fiber around the keyboard is real nice, although it gains hand/grease marks easy, but they do rub off quick too. The battery has been fine for me, I work in I.T. and I've been dual-screened to a secondary 4k monitor all day and the laptop will last without charge up to around 5-6 hours for me during heavy design + programming applications.
The keyboard was weird at first, but you get used to the maglev after a few days (it's super nice and clicky!). The only thing I wished they did was remove the 'PageUp + PageDown' shortcuts from above the left/right arrow keys but a simple script removed their functions.
Only downside to this laptop is the webcam on the bottom, which is a little weird in my video meetings if I don't position my laptop right on my laptop stand.

FYI I came from a Razer Blade 2017 UHD, and after trying it's keyboard yesterday I actually prefer this one now (Dell XPS 15).

I have had the worse experiences with the XPS15 gen 2. Would not recommend it to anyone. I've had the whole motherboard changed and still suffer exactly the same problems i've had from day 1 - random shutdowns and random power ups. I routinely find my backpack super hot as my laptop has randomly started it self. Google has told me that this is not an uncommon problem

This is not to mention that my battery had a recall (even though i had mentioned this to them before the recall) as they were swelling everytime i got onto a plane. Was seriously scared that it would explode.. Worse thing was that before the recall, i already had mentioned this to Dell and they had refused to replace my battery. I guess there must have eventually been enough people complaining that they had to do something.

Lesson learnt to never buy Dells, particularly ones that had just came back. I was on the waitlist for the very first shipment of XPS15 gen2s and they obviously released a $3000 lemon and i was stuck with it. :(

What's point of your comment, this isn't the 2nd gen XPS on sale here.

    • I have the 9560 - and it also has weird power issues like waking up 3 seconds after sleep, waking up automatically in the night, automatically restarting when left on at night, turning off/hibernating while in sleep mode

The new 9500 models look great so I really hope they fixed this

      • Yes thats the same model and problem as mine! Theres no fix from what i gather other than changing the powerboard which i a) don't have the skills to do and b) can't justify buying it to replace.

Maybe its stockholm syndrome, but i'm still hopeful that the new XPSs are nice just bcause they are a nice looking machine, but personally i can't take the risk of ever buying one again…

      • I had this same problem but it was due to my power button catching.

        • then how did you go about fixing it? were you able to source a new power button

  • +4

There are already ASUS laptops out that are cheaper than this with the Ryzen 4800H; see link from Scorptec (also has faster GPU)
    https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/Laptops-&-Notebooks/Gami…

  • New models just launched, key takeaway for new models:

    • Only USB-C/TB3 and SD card as ports
    • Thinner bezels on display
    • Redesigned chassis
    • New 17 model with vapor chamber cooling
    • Improved thermals on 15 inch
    • Smaller battery on 15 inch
    • 10th gen Intel chips
    • No AMD options
  • even being a Dell fan, and XPS fan in particular, I would say it's a lot to shell out for this config.

Lenovo L340 gaming can be configured to match this spec for $1600 without discounts.

in long run I start to think XPS line is overrated. I would rather get a mobile workstation or m15 at this price. more fun and style. but that's my 5c in the profanity jar. I know a lot of people still love xps designs, so this market won't disappear overnight.

    • so you recommend Lenovo L340 for light gaming? i see them for $1,200 what needs to be done for it to be $1,600?

      • you need $1600 to match to the specs in this thread:
        - increase ram to 16gb
        - increase ssd to 512gb
        - upgrade cpu to i7 instead of i5

in my opinion though, buy as is, upgrade later to suit your requirements

        • would you be able to play most games full hd on high settings?

          • +1

@cumova: depends on what you want to play, really. most of the games I like can be played on integrated Intel graphics haha
            Half Life 2
            Half Life: Source
            Star Craft II
            GRIS
            Assassins creed Chronicles
            etc etc etc

I used to get a hard on at laptops with dedicated graphics that sound ominous, but really laptops are for portability and other tasks, you need more screen real estate to enjoy games that do need fancy graphics for..

so for me I decided that a laptop can have a powerful CPU with built in graphics so I can enjoy some great games on the go if I feel like it, and a home PC with a large screen and fancy graphics card for playing anything I want.

Decide for yourself if laptop with graphics card is something you desire. graphics cards in laptops are not upgradeable, as opposed to the desktop.

1650 GTX is a cool gaming card and you will get a lot of gaming done.

  • I'm not a huge XPS fan, but comparing this to a budget gaming laptop is a bit ridiculous.

    • This not a gaming laptop … it more aim at productive task such as photo/video editing.

Those GPU performs worst compare to one in gaming laptop because this is half it size(also cnc aluminium from one block) with bigger battery and colour accuracy screen which adds up compare gaming laptop.
