      seriously?

      • it's true, surface devices aren't great, I bought a surface book that won't disconnect from the base because it didn't charge the base. Returned it the next day

Good customer service, bad product. Still better than google

            @sunnyc:

it's true, surface devices aren't great

You can't judge an entire product line based on one experience with one device. Plenty of people have had great experiences with their Surface devices. All manufacturers end up with a small percentage of faulty products coming off the production line.

            • @eug: I think the Surface line is higher than most companies though, just look at the subreddit. That's not to say they aren't nice though, i've had my fair share of problems with surfaces but I love my current surface laptop and it works perfectly. I'd just try and get as much warranty as you can…

              • +4

                @CEO Rachel Jake:

I think the Surface line is higher than most companies though, just look at the subreddit.

I think there's a sampling bias there, coupled with the human tendency to complain more than praise.

I've ordered a bunch of Surface devices for work and they've worked really well, but I haven't gone to the subreddit to write a post saying "The 20 Surface devices I deployed are working perfectly, and have been since the original one from 5 years ago!"

There are probably tens or hundreds of thousands of people like me who have no issues at all with their Surface devices, so they don't go looking for a forum to post about … nothing.

But if 3 million devices are sold, and you consider a standard failure rate of 2-5%, that could be 150,000 dissatisfied customers, a percentage of which will be shouting from the hills about it. The product reliability could be absolutely standard in the industry, but you'll hear a lot more from maybe 10,000 vocal customers than the other 2.85 million totally satisfied customers.

I personally had major issues with my original Surface Book (I pre-ordered the first-gen one so literally got the first batch), but after I had it replaced, had absolutely no issues with it until it got soaked in my bag when my coffee flask leaked. After some cleaning it actually still runs, but the fan has stopped working so it thermal throttles fast. That's not its fault though!

                • @eug: Of course, people are more likely to go complain about something that doesn't work than discuss something that does. What stands out to me is people mentioning how many times they've had to have units replaced to get a functioning one. It's not just people saying they have a problem with their Surface but that they're on their 5th Surface Book and still having issues. It's just something i've noticed from online discussions and talking to people I know who have Surfaces not to mention my own history. I still really like a lot of the Surface products out there and Microsoft are great when it comes to warranty repairs/replacements in my experience.

Bought surface book 2 recently and it's the best laptop I've used. There are known scenario where you cannot detach the tablet because some apps might be using the dedicated GPU or the tablet is running out of battery. These issues are as designed and there's a way you can manually detached if you need to by using a paperclip in the ventilation hole.

        • nah i love my surface pro 7 , they are great devices, u just got a lemon unit

    • Did you return it to get another one?

Yes I have. I just turned off auto-brightness which resolved that. I found auto-brightness hit and miss anyway.

Same thing happens with Night Light, sometimes it doesn't activate from sleep.

        • either of you have issues with a fan whirr? Mine's only 2 months old and it's a fan or a HD or something spinning (sorry not an IT person!)

          • @tanniesjunk: What you're hearing is most likely coil whine. The bane of every laptop owners existence.

I can only hear mine of it's complete silence or another action I won't name because it'll drive you nuts once you figure it out.

            Very common.

          • @tanniesjunk: The surface lineup hard drives are SSD. They make no noise. Could possibly be a faulty fan, they are a pretty common component in a laptop to fail.

        • I've tried turning off auto-brightness.. doesn't seem to do the trick for me unfortunately

Won a Surface Book (v1) years ago. Wife still uses it, and it has been running perfect.

Have an old Surface Pro 2017 (v5) that I bought new a few months ago and love. Before that, had a used Surface Pro 3 that was still holding up.

Besides the brand new XPS 13 or the HP Spectre X360, I wouldn't consider any other major Windows PC line.

          • +1

            @ThemDealsThough: Disagree.

Had the 16GB device for a month and its a very capable machine. I used it for day to day office work, video conferencing, meeting notes and programming dev. Battery is much better than Surface Pro's. In most tasks like web browsing, chat, office work, I would say its just as quick as using a regular surface device, quite smooth and especially things like Chromium Edge and Web Apps make everything pretty delightful.

Look ultimately everyones use case is different some will have a need for apps that aren't going to run on the device but it is able to run more than most people expect, better than most people expect and I think actually caters to a wider audience then most give it credit for, so don't write it off just because of what "you heard".

The slim pen and note taking on the device is awesome, very much hope slim bezels + slim pen+new type cover come to SP8. I only returned mine because my company made the decision to stay with a design app that doesn't work on it (we were planning to move to one that would have been compatible and then canned it a cpl days into me getting the device >.< ).

          • @ThemDealsThough: How so? They already have an x86 lineup, Surface X is basically an experiment to see one potential way the future's heading.

          • @ThemDealsThough: no they didnt, they are trying something new and targeting a different audience

          • @ThemDealsThough: I think it was an experiment for them. Imho, ARM will be much more common for laptops in like 3-5 years, but right now it's a first gen product. Once the software support matures these sort of products will likely be much more appealing.

      • Use case.

Do you need win32 stuff and standard compute ability of a Surface 7, or UWP apps and LTE and battery life and profile of a Surface X. And so on.

        Then choose.

    • What do you use this for

    • They're discounted everywhere including Microsoft store and TGG.

Microsoft will price match too if you find it at another retailer cheaper.

      Surface Pro X as well.

      • Sorry allgood

      • +1

seems like it's only 15% off on the Microsoft store? For example, Surface Pro 7 128GB is $1274.15 on the Microsoft store, but $1199 at JB…

        • +1

Yeah its odd, every other time MS has lowered the price on the site to match the retailers. Not sure why they haven't however as mentioned if you use live chat they have a standing policy to price match.

        • +1

Microsofts website prices now match JB.

    • 128g storage way to small

    • MmMm more keen on a surface laptop but this is tempting.

  • I just bought a Surface Pro 6 i7 256gb for $1199 from The Good Guys. Amazing machine. Even if it's the previous model, the i7 and 256gb storage is nice. You'll definitely want more storage than 128gb.

    • you can just buy microsd cards for more storage

      • each to their own but tend to agree, the more important component imo is 16GB ram. 8GB can do most people easy but I these just run nicer with 16GB in my opinion.

  • Do they get much cheaper than this or is this as good as it gets? Tempted to buy one

    • 20% off is as cheap as they get and comes around at least once a quarter. 15% off deals are pretty standard.

Outside of negotiating with the sales person in stores like JB yourself, through MS store they occasionally run concurrently with the AMEX $100 off when spending over $500 at MS store. They also have a promotion that can again run concurrently where they offer a free sleeve with purchase of a surface product (if you're nice to support they may let you take the value of that off the price as well which can be up to $90).

  • BUYER BEWARE!

I have a Surface Pro 4 i5 256GB that just failed in a big way a few weeks before reaching the 4 year mark in April 2020. After some recent windows updates including possible firmware updates, the type cover port that recognises the keyboard cover completely failed overnight without warning, and there has been no physical damage of any kind on the device, it was sitting on a table in the exact same spot. It won't recognise ANY Microsoft type covers, even new ones in the store, although my type cover works with other Surfaces. My Surface won't recognise ANY type covers even in BIOS or UEFI boot mode. I have tried resetting the device, update the firmware, uninstall and reinstall drivers, reinstall windows, recover windows, reinstall from factory image via recovery USB drive (downloaded specifically for my device using my serial number), NOTHING would work.

Went to the JB HiFi store where I bought it from, they sent it to a local technician and the local technician said there is nothing he can do to fix it except to open up the screen and replace the physical port. But even then he is not sure if that would fix the problem, in addition to the risk of cracking the screen, a bunch of online posts and forums on reddit and Microsoft's own site have other users with the same problem and the consensus is it is corrupt firmware causing the type cover port to deactivate permanently.

So we try to send it to Microsoft, and I got told by JB HiFi I need to call them up and request an authorisation as it is an "Out of Warranty Device". I called Microsoft and they told me the following:

    • They never carry out any physical repairs on any surface products, as Surface Products are deemed too uneconomical to repair. If something can't be fixed by trouble shooting or software, they will issue a refurbished replacement device as long as the device is within Manufacturer warranty (1 year as stated by Microsoft, but in reality they will honour 2 years because 1 year is unacceptable under the Australian Consumer Law).

    • I argued my device is technically still covered by statutory warranty as an expected working life of a laptop is 4 years for a budget entry level and 6 years for a mid range device (https://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-10-26/how-long-should-a-fri…). At NO point did Microsoft ever refute or argue against this statement, they simply said we will have to escalate this to higher management for approval for the request of either a refund/credit or a free replacement to an equivalent spec device.

    • The case was escalated twice to what they call Tier 3 support which apparently rules on these matters and Microsoft have so far denied the request for a refund or credit, or a free replacement, and keep in mind they do not repair ANY surface devices. I had to push real hard for the 2nd escalation, as the first Tier 2 rep claimed escalation to Tier 3 support can only be done once in their systems.

    • Once again, they did not refute or argue against my statement that my device is still covered by statutory warranty under the Australian Consumer Law as it should not have failed in such a major way within 4 years from date of purchase. They also did not argue against my finding that there are multiple other users around the world with similar issues and this is a well known problem. all they said was they have denied my claim and if I wish to pursue legal action, they would respect that.

    • The only solution they offered to me was to pay $953.70 to swap to a Refurbished Surface Pro 5 i5, and I still have to send my current device back to them.

    • All calls and communication are handled by the call centre in Phillipine. It is not possible to speak to Australian based customer service team or Team leader even after several requests to do so.

Needles to say I have been majorly disappointed by the way Microsoft has handled this. I am going to see if the JB HiFi store has any luck with their Microsft rep or higher management in authorising credit or a free replacement for me.

If that also doesn't work, I will lodge a case against them with the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal (NCAT), which rules on these matters to do with consumer law in NSW.

So before you buy another Surface device, keep my story in mind.

If I had my choice again, I would buy a convertible laptop like the HP Spectre 360 or Lenovo Yoga or something where the keyboard is actually permanently connected to the screen, it makes it easier to use on your lap as well.

If anyone has any help or advice they can give me to help me get this replaced, I would appreciate it, thanks in advance.

    • While you've had issues, they are not the norm. I personally have four Surface devices in my household, and all in all with upgrades we've gone through about fifteen or so with no issues. My workplace also has hundreds of them, and they generally perform well - with far fewer issues than HP, Lenovo, or Dell laptops.

If you're after a permanently attached screen, there is the Surface Laptop - I switched to one as I found it easier to use on my lap than the kickstand.

I'd suggest you contact your states Consumer Affairs or Fair Trading - presuming you paid a decent price for the device, I'd say there is a fair case to be raised under the ACL.

In the meantime - if you buy an aftermarket Surface Type cover (i.e. not Microsoft one), they actually connect through Bluetooth rather than the port (even though they click in the same way), might be a way out of your issues for now.

      • The reason I want to share my story is not just to make people aware of the the fact the type cover port can mysteriously fail after updates.
Yes in every device or machinery, a certain % of them will fail.

It is also to bring attention to the way Microsoft has dealt with this situation.

        • They don't offer repairs on any surface products
        • Refuses to give me a complimentary replacement device
        • Does not refute the fact my issue is a known issue experienced by others
        • Does not refute my device may still be covered under consumer law
        • Expected me to pay an outrageous amount of money ($953.7) for a replacement device (Surface Pro 5 i5) that is 2 generations old (soon to be 3)
        • Says they will respect my decision if I do decide to take legal action against them

Basically they are testing and challenging me if I can be bothered to take action against them and how patient I am in dragging this out.

Is this the type of bullying attitude you want to support?
Is this the type of after sales care you want to experience even though you are supposedly buying a premium device when you purchase a Surface?

        • They don't offer repairs on any surface products

I quite like this. If I send in a scratched-up laptop with a problem, I get a replacement in a fresh new housing and screen that looks brand new.

Refuses to give me a complimentary replacement device

For a four-year old laptop? I'd say you'd struggle to find any manufacturer who would readily give you a replacement for a laptop that's 2 years past its warranty period.

Does not refute the fact my issue is a known issue experienced by others

"others" does not mean "everyone". Keep in mind that people tend to complain more than praise. I've never had any issues with any of the old Surface keyboards that are in use in the office, so I've never had to look for a forum to post a message just to tell everyone that all our keyboards are working fine. As a result you'll mainly hear complaints about them.

If MS has sold 3 million devices (they've sold way more) and you take a standard 3-5% failure rate, there'll be 150,000 failed devices out there which sounds like a lot, but is actually quite standard in the industry.

Does not refute my device may still be covered under consumer law

It could be. It is up to you to chase it. I'm not sure what your chances would be with a 4-year-old device though.

Is this the type of bullying attitude you want to support?

I quite certain virtually all companies would do the same when it comes to a device 2 years past its warranty period, unless maybe it's a problem that is actually widespread. When it comes to devices that have sold in the millions, simply finding others with the same problem doesn't mean it's widespread.

Is this the type of after sales care you want to experience even though you are supposedly buying a premium device when you purchase a Surface?

I've dealt with them a couple of times with a few devices and I think the service I got was excellent.

I too think you should lodge a complaint with your local fair trading body. That way you can either get a resolution, or know for sure if four years is a reasonable amount of time.

BTW Surface warranties have always been 2 years, all the way back to 2013 when the first Surface Pro came out. You'll see the 2-year period when you register your Surface to your Microsoft account.

I've had the exact same issue on my Surface Pro 3, after an update the type cover just stopped working. This is a common issue, it's just planned obsolescence by Microsoft. Also had many issues with my Surface Book, these products just aren't built well and have no reparability. They aren't cheap either

      • +1

or issues just happen sometimes and its not reflective of every device?

Rocking a SB2 here never had an issue and SP3 purchased launch day is still alive and kicking without any type cover issues. I'm not saying these devices are perfect but they aren't poor quality or poorly supported devices either.

The consumer advocates at Consumer Reports have delivered a stunning blow to Microsoft: The nonprofit organization has pulled its recommendations for Surface products, citing an industry-worst failure rate.

According to a Consumer Reports survey of over 90,000 tablet and laptop owners, an estimated 25 percent of those with Microsoft Surface devices will experience “problems by the end of the second year of ownership.” This failure rate is the worst in the industry by far among mainstream PC makers, the publication says, and as a result, it is pulling its “recommended” designation for all Surface products.

“If you are very concerned about how long your products are going to last, it might be better for you to go with a brand that has a higher predicted reliability,” Consumer Reports electronics editor Jerry Beilinson told Reuters. “Laptops and tablets … made by Microsoft were significantly less reliable than most other brands.”

Consumer Reports has announced that it is once again recommending Microsoft’s Surface laptops, after stripping its “recommended” badge from the line of computers last year over marked reliability concerns.

But “Microsoft’s reliability is now on-par with most other laptop brands,” says Martin Lachter, a senior research associate at Consumer Reports

  • Chances of going to jb and negotiating the price down?

    • Given it's already cheaper than anywhere else, at a guess, I'd say close to nil… if you round up.

      • I'm thinking i7 256gb from 2070 to 2000 flat.

  • Does anyone own a Surface Pro X?

    Any thoughts on that one?

    • Gave my thoughts on it above, whirlpool thread also has lots of opinions from users.

If you're on the fence Microsoft have a 30 day return policy (including if you've used the device) and they price match so you can order from them risk free basically.

I almost never lose sleep, but I woke up at 4 am thinking about this.

I intended to buy a 2 in 1 last year, but ended up getting XPS 15 2in1 which is a bulky/heavy/noisy/short battery-life device - 'portable' but not really - big regrets!

I've got "Pro X" on search alert now, just waiting for a -20% deal.

  • It seems the deal is now closed.
