Recommendations for a home theatre sound system ≤$1000

My friend bought me an Epson EH-TW9400 projector and a 100" screen for my birthday, I found out that I doesn't have any audio output from the speaker itself so, as I have no experience with speakers, would someone be able to point me in the right direction with a budget more or less $1000.

I'm located in Sydney by the way.

Thanks a bunch!

  • Gumtree or eBay

Can get some great second hand items

You'll need to tell us what equipment you currently have. The projector doesn't play files all by itself.

    • Currently, my MacBook Pro and gaming consoles (Nintendo Switch and PS4 Pro) are just hooked up directly to the projector via HDMI. My sound output currently is my UE Mega Boom connected via Bluetooth. I don't have any other equipment.

If you are on a budget you can't go wrong with the old school approach. I used to be a TV technician in my younger days and found that the most reliable systems (albeit the most confusing and fiddly to initially set up. Which is why I had that job in the first place) are the receiver and wired speaker setup.

Find a good receiver that can take all your inputs (consoles, laptops etc), and get one with HDMI pass-through that allows video and audio input and output. If your running 4K or 3D you will have to make sure the receiver can input and output that signal. Then run the video output from the receiver to the projector and wire in your speakers with good AWG speaker cable.

In my experience, these systems are the best bang for your buck and are super reliable. My parents Yamaha 5.1 system one is still going strong 15 years later. My Denon 5.1 system is going on 10 years and still sounds great.

You will find heap of products on gumtree for cheap. If going down the used path make sure its a reputable brand (check this website for reviews: https://www.whathifi.com/) and see if you can have a test listen before putting cash down.

    • Thank you so much! Yes I'll be doing some research want something that could last for a while

      • The only down side to the wired approach is the permanence of it. You can' t really change your room setup once it's all in. If you do need flexibility then like what bennyh said, soundbars are good, but do require room dynamics to be awesome (i found that the BOSE soundbar system in a room with three frontal walls worked great).

This! 5.1 systems are awesome :)

Plus, if 1 of the speakers goes (stupid Samsung), you can likely source a replacement for a decent price to replace that channel. Can't do that with a soundbar.

Different needs for different rooms, but if you're running a projector setup then you can justify the full 5.1 setup

The Yamaha Livestage 5400 looks like it ticks many boxes (ignoring the disco light lol) and comes in under budget @ $788. 4K input/output and upscaling, 4 inputs, etc etc.

And if you go the amp & speaker set, you can upgrade the amp later for Atmos and add a couple of extra speakers etc.

Definitely go used for speakers. Audio is one of the only tech things that has barely changed over the last decade and you can get some great deals

  • I am in the same boat. I am willing to spend upto $1k-1.5k for a new home theatre system (speakers and receiver), although I am totally a noob to this scene.

I am been following forums for advice and have been trawling google for good prices on package deals. The following are what I have gathered so far.

I have recently bought a 75 inch LG UHD 4k TV and trying to marry up an audio system for a decent experience.

Since this is my first home theatre system, I am unsure if I should stick to the Option 1) which is cheap/budget and under 1k or if I should stretch a bit more conside others. If others, what would be a good option between 2, 3a/b/c??

Appreciate some expert advice to steer me in the right direction. PS : I am favoring a brand new system to used.

    • Option 1) under 1k : Yamaha Livestage 5400 for $799 on melbourne hifi (comes with receiver HTR-2071, has no bluetooth/usb/wifi)

    • Option 2) ~ 1k : Yamaha Livestage 5500 for $998 on billy guyatts (receiver RX-v385, and has features like bluetooth/usb and ypao sound optimisation, dolby truehd, dts)

    • Option 3a) ~ 1.5k : Yamaha Livestage 6500 for $1579 on melbourne hifi (with receiver RX-v485 , all of above + wifi for the reciver, and 2 x sub with 100W compared to 1 sub with 50W)

    • Option 3b) ~ 1.5k : Yamaha reciver RX-v485 for $548 from melbourne hifi and get 5.1 speaker system from harvey norman for $995. Same receiver as above, but I believe this option has better speakers than that in Livestage 6500?

    • Option 3c) ~ 1.5k : Yamaha Blockbuster 5500 for $1584 from stancash. This option is next level up the livestage package, but I am not sure if the speaker package are better than th
      ose in Option 3b?

    Thanks.
