Just wanting to know what exactly cookies, caches and popups do exactly to laptops or PC.

Can any one of above features Can look into my PC and laptop WINDOWS settings such as display settings and etc.?

Also, Can someone easily look into my WINDOWS settings without my permission, I know with team viewer I need to allow the other user to do it but are they any other ways that someone can look into my settings without my permission.

Your answers would help me a lot.

Cookies are small files which are stored on a your computer automatically. They are designed to hold a small amount of data specific to a particular client and website, and can be accessed either by the web server or the client computer. They're used to track everything you do online for both good and nefarious reasons.

A cache is a repository of temporary files that a device uses to speed up the user experience. So say you access OzB many times, the browser will store some files offline so next time you visit it loads faster and doesn't need to download them again.

Pop-ups are small windows that 'pop up' over the top of web pages in your internet browser. Advertisers use them as a way to get your attention which is annoying so make sure to download Adblock+ or uBlock Origin browser extensions to block them.

Yes, hackers can access your system through a variety of different means. Either tricking you into opening an executable file either through an add, website download, packaged in another download or spam e-mail attachments etc. Practise safe web browsing, updated Microsoft Security Essentials/Defender and get free version of Malwarebytes to do weekly scans and stay safe.

    • Thanks heaps, hence none of those features Will record or log my WINDOW SETTINGS RIGHT?

      • What do you mean by Windows settings exactly? Cookies do record elements of your computer details within them. Any unauthorised access to your PC will naturally be able to view everything.

Cookies are kind of like little Sticky notes that websites leave on your computer that helps them remember certain things about you. Everytime you request a web page on your web browser, the website will have access to your Cookies.

They are not executable files (programs) in the traditional sense. For e.g if you visit Whirlpool forums and you logged in, Whirlpool leaves a cookie on your computer so that you will continue to be logged in even after you've left the site and revisited it later.

It's also used for targeted advertising, e.g if you've been browsing eBay or Amazon, it leaves a cookie and when you are browsing other sites you will be shown ads relevant to what you searched.

It is possible for a hacker to access your computer simply by visiting a website. However, the exploits tools that can be run are limited. The hacker needs to trick the user into clicking yes in a popup window for the hacker to gain full access. However, this is not necessary if you are running a vulnerable web browser. So some tips are to not click on random websites, Update your browser when possible, Periodically clear the /etc/hosts file and Ensure your DNS has not been manipulated.

    • The hacker needs to trick the user into clicking yes in a popup window for the hacker to gain full access.

What if the questions were "click "yes" if you don't want to be hacked" or "click "yes" to exit"?

Someone changing your windows settings - It's usually hackers about 0.01% of the time, the other 99.99% is you doing something stupid or misclicking and changing it without knowing how you did it.

  • Perhaps add some more context into your post?
