Stihl RE 130 PLUS Pressure Washer with Free RA 101 Surface Cleaner (Value $115.60) for $599 @ Stihl Dealer

160

Hey guys.
I know a majority of people will say that this is too much for a pressure washer but I feel like I've done enough research and am hoping that this one will last a fair while and be repairable (all repair parts available from Stihl).
I was looking for a pressure washer and landed on the Stihl RE 129 Plus or the Gerni 1800w for $299, or the 2300w for $499.
I noticed that the RE 130 Plus had a free patio/surface cleaner included (value $115) for $50 more.

Story time
I was looking for a pressure washer to use for my bowden's products and use for my new house. I wanted a reel and a steel braided hose (seem to be on models <$500). I wanted to get one that would just work with no fuss so started off researching Bowden's recommendations.
- Looked at Karcher K4 but they have plastic pumps until the $500 mark
and I didn't like the idea of a digital display.
- Looked at Bosch Aquatak 135 but it had no reel or braided hose.
- Looked at Ryobi but user reviews had me skeptical and questionable real life specs.
- I looked at Gerni and they were the only ones that could hold a candle budget and spec wise, ($299 model with patio cleaner and reel but no steel braided
hose
and $499 model with no patio cleaner attachment
($40 extra) but with reel and steel braided hose
).
Side by side the Stihl appeared better quality. Also I've read they were recently sold to Ryobi, I don't know if this is true.

Protip: if you're washing cars, you WANT the cheap one.

Pressure is good, extreme pressure is not.

    https://www.bunnings.com.au/homelite-1400w-1450psi-pressure-…

Those work well enough for cars. Ditto ryobi and ozito.

Where do you get that information from?
      Bowden's recommends well past 1800 psi https://www.bowdensown.com.au/guides/how-to-use/exterior-car…

Regardless, was hoping to get cleaning at the house and car done in 1 and believe that 1450 psi might not be tough enough stubborn stains on the outdoor cement, tiles, brick and fences.

I "get the information" from experience. Detailing cars is one of my true passions. New or show cars and well kept vehicles, you should be able to go as powerful as you want.

In reality, if you have someones car with aging clear coat, or a really big stone chip (especially on brands like Mazda, where their paint is known to be badly bonded), you're at real risk of sheeting the clear coat off the car.

The water only needs to be powerful enough to remove the residue of your products, it should be doing very little of the actual cleaning.

Unless its a 8+ hour wash and detail, usually even a garden hose is enough pressure.

Though if you're being serious, the final rinse is always a garden sprayer with demineralize water, or you'll risk spots.

    • I was looking at one purely for removing dirt, especially from the rims. I'm not particularly interested in washing my car with foams and the like, so does your advice still hold true?

      • +1

I wasn't giving any advice. I'm purchasing for my own needs

My comment was not in reply to yours.

Most people don't take good care of their rims, most arent even waxed, let alone sealed or ceramiced, so the dirt, mostly iron brake dist usually 'bakes' on (or more accurately, embeds, then rusts).

You'll always need rim brush, regardless of your water pressure.

Your best friend for rims is a claybar.

Dedicate one to them, and keep using it over the months till its properly black.

Just, don't let it near paint…..

I disagree with the lower pressure, 1450psi is a bit too low for using foam lances on cars. You also want to look into flow rate of a pressure washer if using for washing cars.

Having used lower pressure washers on cars compared to something around 2000psi there is 100% a difference.

Just dont go overboard, dont need 3000psi + to wash a car.

This Stihl unit looks like a great buy!

      • Snojob by bowdens managed to foam with just hose pressure.

So much comes down to tool choice and needs.

At the end of the day my father has a wall of trophies for his show cars, and hes only ever had a garden hose and dedication.

You need to learn your method.

maybe use the car wash head not the cyclone head

    • Would this one work well with Bowden's Snow Cannon? Purchased it on sale a while ago but never bought a pressure washer to use it with. If it produces a tonne of suds at that price, I'm happy :) Thanks

  • Cleaning power is a combination of temperature, pressure and volume (litres per second). The higher they all are, the better it cleans.

Given hot water cleaners are $$$, I always just look at pressure and volume and buy the washer that gives the highest of those in my budget.

I think you're overthinking plastic pumps and normal hoses. I've had a $$$ Lavor unit and a cheaper Karcher ($300ish). The Lavor was all metal pump, hose etc. It has needed 2 repairs and now sits in the shed broken.

The Karcher I bought after the 3rd failure of the Lavor. The Karcher is used regularly with a foam gun on my cars, cleaning many square metres of concrete, patios etc. It has been run with no water a few times (whoops) and knocked over / saturated more times than I care to remember. And it still works perfectly fine. I could throw it out tomorrow and still be ahead.

    • Fair enough. I'm also looking for reel for ease of use and reel and braided for no unexpected kinks.
I'm sure the cheap ones do the trick but I want cleaning to be as hassle free as possible and the patio cleaner made it a no brainer

      • Sure, reel is good (have that on my cheaper Karcher).

For hassle free cleaning you need to ensure the pressure and water volume are there.

Also look at accessories, I have the patio cleaner, couple of different nozzles, windows cleaner, foam gun and under vehicle dolly for my Karcher. Most other brands have a very limited range of extras.

    • or you can run a T in one of the hot water lines and have a hot water tap in the garden to feed the pressure washer

  • +1

Does this come with a brass pump?

  • +1

If you're willing to pay that much for one, you should consider this as well
    Husqvarna PW 360 Pressure Washers
    https://www.husqvarna.com/au/products/pressure-washers/husqv…

    • That just looks like a rebranded gerni too

    • No patio cleaner on that one but the husqvarna has higher max pressure, water throughput and hose length.

  • How good or bad is Stihl to deal with in regards to Warranty?

  • how is this compared to a gerni, it looks a little like a rebranded gerni?

  • The patio looks just like the gerni's one just orange instead of green, even looks to have the same connector https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9RDXQ2-krzQ

  • I vouch for Stihl pressure washer. I own the RE 119 for a couple of years now. They are really good quality. I use it to wash all my cars and concrete floor.

This model is better than mine of course but honestly for home use all you need is the RE119 or the new RE120.

    • +2

Looks like the RE120 comes with a free patio cleaner also.

      • I didn't see that.
        $399 with a steel hose.

is the reel and extra grunt worth $175

      • Thanks. Reserved a RE120 for pickup.

        • Double check your reservation, my local can't get stock until the end of July

    • Is the 119 vs the 120 just an updated model?
      Theyre specced very similar

  • It look like you've done your research, so can I ask if there any reason you haven't mentioned or looked at petrol powered ones? I don't know much about pressure washers, and have never used a petrol one, but always assumed they would be a step up (not to mention one less tether to worry about).

    • +1

Good question, honestly just noise and maintenance (e.g. spark plugs).
Didn't look into it barely at all except when I found that hot water was too $$$.

    • +1

another factor to consider is that most electric pw have start/stop function when you stop spraying water; whereas petrol pw continue to run. When you're washing cars, it becomes a hassle turning it on and off.

      • That's something I didn't think of. Good point

    • +1

I've had a petrol powered one. It was quite powerful. Not only do they clean concrete, they can also destroy concrete. So much pressure. Also not as convenient as mentioned by science-teacher. Noise, fumes, maintenance etc. I wouldn't use one to wash a car unless you want to strip it back to bare metal

  • What about this one https://www.bunnings.com.au/gerni-2300w-2320psi-super-high-p… $599 Gerni 2300W 2320PSI Super High Pressure Cleaner

    • +1

Looks good as it has a reel, just another $100.
I settld on the Stihl re120 with no reel for $399, the build quality is great.

  • Can it work with the gerni attachments
