      Why not
Looks like the lowest price for the phone at JB?
      Can't find a cheaper price

I'm not sure that it is the best value phone at the price point. (Not up to date with phone data)

        • +31

I guess you have a point.

We should post everything at its most expensive point

        • +2

I can see a shit storm coming about what constitutes a bargain.

          • +2

Ain’t no worst fanboys than google/android fanboys, and they don’t take well criticism.

        • Lmao u should be banned for this comment

Oh neat, a Pixel deal. I can't wait to read what Nikoris reckons.

He is such an apple fanboy, and being a new immigrant makes it so much fun.

  • +14

The last pixel phone to offer unlimited original quality backup of photos (until January 31st, 2022)

    • Only a good deal of all you do is upload video, if which this phone produces some of the worst video of any flagship.

  • shame its only single sim

    • +1

Pixel 3 has support for eSIM just like the recent iPhones. Don’t know if it is available in AU, online search shows mixed responses.

      • +3

It has support for eSIM but not the dual SIM functionality. Dual SIM is available for Pixel 3a and Pixel 4

        • +1

legit question, why is people so worried about dual sim? Why do you need two sims?

          • +1

            @mange: for your side chicks.

          • +1

@mange: Not having to carry two phones usually. Otherwise handy if you travel internationally and want to maintain a home sim for receiving SMS etc. from home, and a local sim for data, place calls etc.

In the spirit of OZB you may also have say a cheaper sim with large data allowance, but maintain a second one for calling at cheaper rates.

For me not having dual sim on my pixel 3 was a pretty big bummer, waiting to see what comes out next re pixel phone with fingerprint readers (no face recognition for me please)!

          • +2

@mange: One SIM for your real number to get calls and SMS messages, the other one for cheapo "new customer" data plan SIMs, because customer loyalty is a dead concept and companies want to milk existing customers.

            • +1

@Blue Cat: Why even bother with this switching bull***. I pay $30 for 30gig which I don’t even use most of. If I save an extra $5 a month it isn’t going to change my life radically.

              • +1

@Icecold5000: While I don't use dual SIM cards, I pay $5 a month for the past 2+ years (20GB per month) jumping between CatchConnect and Kogan Mobile 90 day plans.
I think I saved quite an amount compared to what I would be paying if I was a normal regular customer.
And the big data allows me to watch plenty of YouTube no matter where I am, can't live without it.

                • @Blue Cat: I booked a December flight 12 months in advance from Sydney to KL for 450. Three months prior to my departure date they went up to 1500. I’m not adverse to searching out bargains but it needs to be worthwhile. $20 odd a month doesn’t seem to be worth it.

                  • +1

                    @Icecold5000: <i>"$20 odd a month doesn’t seem to be worth it."</i>

Generally, the idea is to look for savings on big one-off purchases and small regular purchases. The ones that don't matter are small one-off purchases.

                    • @worldwidehappiness: But you have to factor in the effort. It might be worth mowing your neighbors lawn once a week for $20 than spend the time chasing deals.

          • +3

@mange: Saves having to carry a personal and work phone around as well

          • @mange: I have a separate sim from work and a work profile on my phone. So having dual sim allows me to answer my personal calls separately while ignoring all work related calls.

  • Great price considering I got the 64gb HN deal for only slightly less. I'd never need more than 64gb personally.

This generation phone locks you into using only Google wireless chargers. The pixel 4 allows you to use 3rd party wireless chargers for those interested.

    • +14

Wrong. It won't fast charge without the pixel stand but wireless charging definitely still works.

      • -3

So you can wielding charge, but at 5 generation old speed

  • +37

Miss the good time I paid $399 for the Nexus 5 on the release day.

    • +29

I remember buying a Windows 10 Nokia phone for $500 that got 4 years of security updates, had a replaceable battery and was a proper high end phone.

We all made the wrong choice letting Google and Apple own the phone market.

      • +4

You don't think if Microsoft remained in the mobile market they wouldn't have made progressively more expensive phones?

      • +7

Windows OS was crappy, was nowhere near as good as android.
Source: Lumia 930 and 640 owner

        • +16

          Strongly disagree.

No apps was its biggest downside. Great social networking integration and the best UI if you ask me.

          I really miss it.

          • +3

@giventofly: Lumia 800, yeah maybe… Facebook is pretty well where it ended tho. No Instagram, Pinterest, LinkedIn etc. etc… Used to notifications missed pretty regularly, but yeah, maybe. Without apps it was a pretty useless experience.

Lumia 925, my favourite windows phone. The OS pivoted with windows phone 8 and social was no longer part of the DNA. It was a good shift… More like android and iOS with the feel of windows phone. Social integration died well before windows phone did.

            • @iWan: Twitter was great.

            • +2

@iWan: No Facebook on a phone is a plus! :D

Another vote for windows phone having the best UI

          • @giventofly: No, the os itself was crappy. Huge issues with apps being closed in the background thus missing notifications and calls, stock apps were terrible etc
I dont remember much but the whole experience was terrible

        • I remember buying a Lumia 800 for nearly $1k that got dumped by Nokia/MS just a few months after release. I didn't learn and bit the bullet again, this time paying even more money for the Lumia 930 that also got dumped by MS. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.

        • +2

          Highly disagree.

I also had the Lumia 930. The OS was great.

It's the intentional lack of 3rd party apps is what killed it.

Google for example was intentionally not producing or updating their apps for the platform.

          • @JPerez: Nah, the whole os wasn’t refined and had basic issues.

      • +2

I turned on my L950 earlier this week. Still makes Android (10 in my case) look clunky and non-integrated.

      • +1

No, actually apple and Samsung own the phone market, google is trying hard but not gonna get there any time soon

      • No way, Microsoft would have done exactly the same.

    • Ah I remember I got the Note 3 for ~SGD$800 (back when 1SGD~0.8AUD) and thought what an expensive phone. Look at where we are now.

      • I bought my first smartphone, HTC touch hd in 2007 for $1100. Haven't paid that much since then

    • Hopefully after yet ANOTHER year of PIXEL failures, we'll go back to the Nexus 'idea' of phones. Great prices Mid-high tiered phones.

Looks like Google will only be releasing the 4a this year, proving that they can't make flagships for shit.

      • How does producing a lower spec model of their line up prove they can't make flagships? Perhaps targeting a different demographic maybe? Perhaps the consumer who doesn't want to spend $1500 on the latest features and will settle for something cheaper that is not quite flagship?

I guess the iPhone SE 2020 proves that Apple can't make flagships in your books then hey?

Haven't seen anything suggesting there won't be a Pixel 5 this year?

        • -1

          Dafuq you talking about neckbeard?

      • Companies make phones to make a profit. The money isn’t necessarily in a flagship phone.

    • RIP Nexus line indeed! Loved them

  • +2

I got this in the Harvey Norman special with Google Home Max. I think about $798. Anyhow I love this phone and only today thinking why would I ever upgrade. 128GB even better sweeter deal.

PS As Jip says your not tied down to a Google wireless charger. I have an Anker (only $20) and charges just fine wireless…maybe not as fast as a Google charger but never had one so will never know.

  • +5

Crap phone except for the camera. I got my 64gb variant last year for about $540ish. Fortunately managed to sell it a few months back for $420. Would never buy a pixel again, my 3 year+ old OnePlus 3T was better in every regard save for the camera.

  • So with the Pixel 4A (eventually) incoming, it is highly likely to be priced at $699-749 here in Australia.

Can anyone convince me why I should wait for the 4A given battery life benefit on the 4A is still unknown at this stage (they did a good job with the 3A)?

Battery issues aside, the Pixel 3 seems the better buy given the ~50% extra cost of the 4A.

    • I would wait until the 4a is released, it's only going to lower the 3 pricing im guessing (or stay the same). So if the 4a doesn't grab you then go the 3.

I love my 3, but the battery life is really as bad as they say it is.

Edit:I'm not associated I just can't work out how to remove it off my account.

      • Only thing is by the time the 4A lands in here and can be purchased, run-out stock of the 3 will be likely all dried up.

I'm running an OG refurb Pixel and coping ok with the battery life so I'm assuming a brand new 3 will be a battery upgrade!

        • Yes that's a good point.

I get about 3 hours of onscreen time if that helps, battery capacity is at 82 after about 1.5 years.

Basically the same as my iPhone 6s after 3 years.

    • +1

get a discounted 3a if the 4a doesn't work out (fair chance given google's track record). 3a will drop in price after the 4a's release
Have the 3a and it's the best phone I've had, battery for days, fast enough, great pics. keeping it for another year

      • Same here. I got my 3a XL for just over $600 on special and it's the best phone I've had. Coming up to a year old and if I had to replace it I'd probably buy another one if I could get it for that price.

  • +6

I have a pixel 3 and I must say I'm a bit dissapointed with the build quality compared to when I got the nexus 5.

Camera is great but there's been constant call quality issues, crackling sound and drop outs. Ive had to change my phone 3 (twice for call quality, once for getting a phone with dead pixels) times before I got one that didn't have these issues.

I would exercise caution. Service from Google have been very good though.

    • I had this weird thing with the power button were it would sort of jam and just keep opening the camera but a little tap and it hasn't happened again…

The only time I get crackling is when I'm on a WhatsApp/Skype/messenger call and my screen goes to sleep, it's so weird…

    • When I got my Pixel 3 initially I had the buzzing sound while on calls. An update fixed that however and I don't have it anymore.

Other than that I've had no real issues.

      I've never owned the Nexus 5 s o I can't compare the build quality.

However the build quality is pretty good I reckon.

  • +5

I guess the iPhone SE 2 and the upcoming iPhone 12 will make Android phones back to their right price points.

    • Wishful thinkng. But I don't think so.

    • Kidding yourself if you think iPhone 12 will have a downward push on phone prices. (Except maybe at the ultra-high end, where some android phones are pushing above the top Apple prices)

  • Hmmm Galaxy A71 vs Pixel 3

    • Bought the A71 during the recent EPP deal ($474) and it is a great phone. Amazing screen, long battery life, responsive. The camera is OK but not poor.

It's about 80% of the S20 at half the cost and no real downsides with one exception - no waterproofing or dust rating is a bit of a downer.

If you can live with that (I can) then it is well worth the price.

      • Neat..

No waterproofing is my only gripe.

  • Price protection claim, here I come! 🤑

  • +2

Don't recommend the Pixel 3 based on our experience with the Pixel 3xl. The ring volume only uses one of the phones speakers and you can't hear it properly. Seems to be a known issue Google refuse to fix.

  • I too was tossing up between the pixel 3/4 vs the A71. Ended up getting the $474 A71 and have been really impressed with it. Styling and function like tycho says, not dissimilar to the S20, at almost half the price. Great resale also being a Samsung.

  • +6

I would never buy a pixel phone again, plagued with software issues, charging port issues and headphone jack issues.

Happily swapped to an S10 5g and will never touch one again..

    • I was literally going to write something similar until I looked up.
In addition to the faults you have mentioned, they also have atrocious screen uniformity.
You're basically entering a panel lottery with these steaming piles of shit.
Don't be fooled by Android One, it's not what it's hyped-up to be.

    • +7

As a counterpoint, I have been using the Pixel phones since launch and they're easily the best phones I've owned. Great cameras, highly stable software, not a single issue with charging. My 3XL had an abrupt phone reception failure and the warranty replacement process was fast and painless. Most of my family is now on Pixels through my recommendation and they're all going strong.

Meanwhile, the 2 Samsung phones I have owned were very pretty, but both died prematurely. So clearly your mileage may vary.

      • +2

Agree, had an OG Pixel for over 3 years, software great, camera great, never had any issues until very recently (after the 3 year mark). Partner has a Pixel 2, again no issues, everything is fine, that is a couple of years old now.

So I switched to a Galaxy S20 (was tossing up between that an the 4XL) and immediately have some regret, probably not enough to sell it and swap phones but already can see that the camera is inferior to the one on my old phone, the images are soft in many cases, once any zoom is applied (which admittedly is never good on phones), even minor zoom, it starts to look like CGI and everything is super soft and smooth, basically not a single sharp edge in photo. Not a fan of the Samsung android skin, already see some bugs like badges on apps saying 2 or 3 notifications when in fact there is only 1, RCS doesn't seem to work unless it was purchased from Telstra (seems odd), some of the menus and configuration are less intuitive than the stock android.

Definitely some things that are better about other flagship phones, perhaps better batteries, better screens, this feature or that.

But if the stock android experience, solid software that gets regular updates and the camera quality are important to you, cant look past the Pixel lineup.

    • Pixel 3 has no headphone jack.

Compared to all other Android phones, Pixel phones have the least software problems.

All reviews pretty much parise the non-bloated Android OS.

  • +3

jb like to flog very old models at not so bargain basement price treating everyone like mugs as if to imply customers are not so bright. (think iphone SE 2020)
surely you can cut out that bezel at $500 in 2020

    • +1

      LOL exactly!
The LG V50 was $599 a few weeks ago.
      Thanks, but no thanks JB.

    • Out of curiosity, can you find a better deal for this phone specifically, in a brick and mortar store? Some people (myself included, after awful experience with ebay and kogan warranties) just prefer them.

  • I had the 3XL, too big for me so sold it and jagged a 3 basically new for 300.
Was very happy with it until I got the flashing green screen on the weekend. Has since stopped, but I presume it'll happen again :/

Battery life is what I'd call poor for 2020- especially after briefly having an A20 which was a beast in the stamina department. But in the end, it lasts me for my usage. Usually get 4-4.5hrs SOT, which is ample for weekdays. Weekends I usually have to find the charger, but I really shouldn't be spending as much time on my phone anyway.

    • +1

Battery life is what I'd call poor for 2020

Well yeah; it was initially released in 2018

    • I've had my Pixel 3 and the missus the 3 XL 3 months after launch and we've had no issues whatsoever.

Actually that's a lie, I had this buzzing sound while on calls when I first got it but it's gone now.

But no issues with the screen whatsoever.

  • Can anyone tell me where I'd find a decent pixel 1? Just after a cheapo with a good camera and battery

    • Try for the Mia2 rather than og pixel.

    • eBay $159 refurbished.

    • Ah if you want battery life maybe not a good idea to buy a 7 year old phone?
Samsung A20 would be a much better buy

    • +1
    • You can buy the OG Pixel XL brand new at JB Hifi for $300

    • Thoughts on a pixel xl v new phones in the price range like the a20? I was thinking the camera and hardware of a 4 year old flagship might still edge out the phones in the $200/price range?

  • Would you go for this or the LG G8s for the same price? (I already bought the G8s, but enjoy torturing myself by asking these sorts of questions every new deal.)

    • +1

I have the Pixel 3. The main selling points for me was the exceptional camera and the clean Android OS install as well as regular updates straight from Google.

  • -1

    Don't!

Pixel 3 has 1 year left on updates..
