I have read that FTTP connections do not require a separate modem as it is part of the NBN connection already.
Will my Telstra Gateway Max work as a compatible wireless router?
TIA

Adding onto this, you may need to enable "WAN Backup Mode" as it's disabled by default if I remember correctly
Thank you. I guess a more generic question - what specs router do I need to be able to connect?
WAN capability
Wireless 802.11n or later?
What else?
any router
If you are with Telstra, contact them and they might provide you with one of the 'smart' modems - in preparation for our switch from cable to HFC Telstra gave as a free Smart modem Gen 2 (the one with 4g backup).
Been off-contract for ~18 months as wasn't charged for it. Had a C6300BD-1 before that.
or just check gumtree/fb marketplace and buy one for ~$10
No harm in asking.
It should work, as I am currently using the Telstra smart modem gen 2 Technicolor DJA0231 as a router on my nbn hfc connection.
And I am not with Telstra currently. I didn't need to change any settings if I remember correctly, it was a few months ago though, it was just plug n play.
This question was answered in 2016 and the answers were the first result from a Google search of the model number. https://crowdsupport.telstra.com.au/t5/Modems-Hardware/Netge…
Did you read the thread? It's not very conclusive
The short answer is NO
It will and it wont
i.e. Wont be 100% compatible
Wrong. It will work with FTTP.
Just to confirm, you've got it working? Lots of conflicting advice out There
If anyone stumbles onto this thread, FYI this modem does not work with iiNet cable, the cable is locked to Telstra. I'm not certain on whether it can be connected via WAN to fttp or not, I suspect it can but I haven't been able to test it.
Note the router does not support PPPoE

It does have WAN capability, so if it is FTTP you should be able to connect an ethernet from the NTD to the WAN port (if it doesn't work in Uni-D1, check Uni-D2 as sometimes it is configured on that)
