Can eBay Sellers Fake Shipping Information?

I've been waiting for an item for a couple of weeks. The status on it has been saying that "Shipping information received/approved by Australia Post" but that's it.

Now it's saying the item was processed at their facility. And only now does it come up as sent.

Can sellers create fake shipping info via Aus Post, or did Aus Post just hold the item for 2 weeks for "processing"?

Mail through Aus Post appears to be banked up and is taking much longer than usual to deliver.

Allow another 5 days longer than normal for most mail deliveries.

    • +1

2 weeks past the original date though? I’ve had many things delivered during that time.

What’s suss is that only down does it come up as “sent” in ebay. 2 weeks after tracking was added.

      • +3

it took a week before aus post pick up my adidas order

ebay might have said it was sent (cause they requested aus post to pick it up) but tracking doesn't start until I get picked up (can take a long time)

      • Hithere is right, that means that the sender has requested a pick up but Auspost hasn't done so yet. Once it is picked up from the sender it will say "We have your item" is should then be processed and delivered within a few days (depending on where you are).

I never rely on eBay's guestimates of posting/delivery dates.

Check the seller's feedback, do they have a history of long delivery times?

  • +19

Also - 'shipping information received from sender' - actually doesn't mean anything. It just means the sender created a label but haven't dropped it off to be posted. I've had a seller try to say it has been sent with the tracking number and AusPost advised that it was never received by them. So basically, just because a label was created doesn't necessarily mean it was sent.

    • +1

I have also been selling small items on eBay, never use the Austpost label, always write my own on an envelope, and only mark as sent after i drop it into the letterbox. Recently sold 1 in WA and I choose to drive 20mins to drop it off to buyer's mailbox as i knew about the delay in deliveries.

  • Sounds like Australia Post has just received the paperwork lodgement, doesn't sound like it is in transit otherwise you would see a scan update.

  • +12

"Shipping information received by Australia Post" - means a postage label has been purchased, typically online
    next
"Received by Australia Post" - means the item has been lodged across the counter at AusPost
    next
"Item processed at facility" - means it has been tracked at a parcel depot en-route to destination. This can appears a the parcel progresses towards its destination
    next
"Onboard for delivery" - self explanatory
    next
    "Delivered' - self explanatory

OP AusPost banked up pretty bad at the moment. It's not the seller's fault.

Took me 2 weeks to receive the delivery for a phone case from a seller in Melbourne.
Now waiting for a couple of other orders for the past 20 days which are coming from NSW and QLD.

Just sit tight. It will be delivered before Xmas.

    • There’s no rush. I was just curious if sellers can/do this sort of thing.

I noticed if I buy certain chinese items, even though they say theyre located in australia, they take weeks. but usually theyre with fastway.

I think fastway accept or generate tracking numbers for items not yet posted. complain with paypal when the item is on the way and youll get a refund, and the item.

What's the unethical bit? The part where the ebay seller lied about the items location or when the buyer asked for a refund, because the seller lied?

        • +2

          What's the unethical bit?

The bit about getting something you want, for nothing.

        • The moment you need to start asking questions about your actions, the unethical action has more than likely already taken place.

          • @Frayin: Perhaps the sellers should think about this before lying about the items location and rorting GST. I have no sympathy for these sellers.

            • @salmon123: Ah yes, the ol'proverb,

              "Two wrongs make a right."

Or was it something else? Anyway, i'm not one to talk, i do plenty of unethical things, just stating the facts.

              • @Frayin:

                "Two wrongs make a right."

Both the wrongs are the seller - item location and gst fraud. The buyer is the victim in the first case, the Australian tax payer in the second case.

As a buyer, i always pay a premium to get a locally shipped item faster. Really annoying when I'm left waiting weeks for it.

Australia Post are not updating tracking information for Parcel Post packages from businesses.

I have no evidence to prove this to you, but that's what's occurring.

  • +2

Was the item actually from Australia, or one of those dodgy overseas ones pretending to be sending from Australia?

    • No idea. Said it’s from Australia.

      • +2

Botany or Darwin by any chance? Checked their feedback?

        • Item was in Melbourne apparently. Being posted to… Melbourne. A few suburbs away.

          • +4

@cnut: Item will actually be in Shenzen/Guangzhou/Shanghai. Being posted to the the designated Aus post distribution centre after arrival at Melbourne airport to…….Melbourne. A few suburbs away.

          • @cnut: Yeah… don't check the location of the item, but the seller.

If the item is Australia (typically Melbourne or Sydney) and the Seller is Hong Kong / China - it's getting dropshipped.

When the package arrives, you'll see it comes from some shipping company, and if you look them up you'll find they specialise in shipping from Hong Kong / China.

      • +3

Chullora and Regents Park are 2 more locations, but shipped from China.

        • +1

They are getting more creative, first it was Darwin and then Chullora, Botany or Regents Park. Lately I see suburbs and capitals spread all over Australia. Must have decided to open Google maps and pick a random town.

Auspost is smashed Many parcels delayed. Even worst for parcels heading to WA states expect 3-5 weeks. Go to whirlpool forum, many members reporting the same thing.

  • +1

Just a scummy seller, they generate a label via myPost, to mark it as "sent" to get their stats up on eBay and to be eligible for the free & fast icon.

  • Hey cnut.

It took 2.5 weeks for something I ordered from PCcasegear to change from "shipping information received" to "on board for delivery". They said Auspost were getting smashed and scanning less to "reduce delays" in moving of freight.

    • +1

Correct. I can vouch for this. Auspost scan less when its at depot. They manually handling the parcel by hand. Normally they put into automatic sorting machine, but not at the moment, too much parcels.

Lately auspost no longer scanning, and only get scan when its close to delivery address.

  • Easy enough to give you a real tracking number of another parcel

  • Yeah I've had this before. I've leanrt to read the feedback history for the seller, because someone will normally mention slow postage or item not from Aus.

I've gotten a few things delivered lately including 3 items this week. None of them have been delivered any slower than normal from AusPost.

  • I've ordered Thermometers and Oxymeter from 2 sellers claiming they're sending from "Sydney Australia"- 47 days ago. Till now shows as "Shipping information received/approved by Australia Post". So asked for refund.

One of them refunded smoothly whilst the other said they refunded but never did (so took it with eBay and they refunded me straight away)

  • You have bought something form a dropshipper/OS seller where the last leg of delivery would be handled by Australia post. The seller has lodged the paperwork with Aupost hence the tracking status you are seeing. Guaranteed this item is coming from China and and due to the ongoing lockdowns and flight delays the tracking would remain at this state for a two weeks or more. In the past this method of delivery allowed sellers to successfully fake their location and honestly it was pretty efficient. On average they could deliver a low cost item from China to an Australian address within a week but the current situation has become their undoing as they still try to fake the item location but fail to deliver within reasonable time exposing their modus operandi.

Once the package is received into Auspost delivery stream you would see a new update similar to "Item processed at facility" and from there it could take few days to a week or so for it to reach your address.

Even if you email them questioning the delay you would get an email in Chinglish blaming delays with Auspost when in fact they are still waiting for the package to be handed over by the bulk international courier.

    • I suspect this is probably what's happening.

  • +2

That's very normal at the moment. The company I work for deals with AusPost and we were informed that because of the huge influx of parcels, they are being sent to makeshift storage centres with no scanning facilities instead of going straight to the sorting centre. That's why you wont see any tracking info for about 1-2 weeks and when they are ready to process your parcel, they will transfer it to the sorting centre and you will see an update.

    • +1

100% correct. My neighbour working for auspost as truck driver, he said: this is like xmas volume for auspost. And To make it worst, normally 500 staff on the floor sorting parcel at Chullora NSW, and they have to cut down into 300 staff due to social distancing, indoor area.

    • Maybe that's the case. But this item was coming from the same city supposedly. Stuck there for two weeks? Doubt it in this case.

      • We've had parcels sent out beginning of April and they only got their first update on the 20th. I would give it a bit more time. They were meant to fix up the issue this week because sellers are being bombarded with complaints even though their parcel was dispatched straight away.

  • Took a month for something to arrive from one state over. Use to day 2 days, thanks C19

  • Very easy to fake. But then very easy to claim refund.

  • The status on it has been saying that "Shipping information received/approved by Australia Post" but that's it.

Means they created a label (and paid for postage), but doesn't meant they have 'shipped' the item as such.

I've got an item sitting in this state for 2 weeks now, going Melbourne to Melbourne. The seller is blaming auspost for the delay, but I keep pointing out they haven't received the item yet and there are zero tracking updates to say auspost has even touched it yet.

    • +3

Means the seller is in Melbourne, China and the package is still with their bulk international courier on it's way to Auspost.

      • -1

Normally I would guess that too……

But this company has a warehouse in Melbourne, I did look this up before ordering, the feedback on fleebay is positive, none of the normal feedback signs of delayed shipping etc. So a little surprised by the delay.

        • -1

a little surprised by the delay.

There have been news articles for the past month about the delays. Stuff is taking weeks and scans aren't happening in a lot of cases. These are unprecedented times - have some patience.

One academic said that Australian buyers are the least tolerant and most impatient in the world.

I'm aware, but 2 weeks to go from 'melbourne to melbourne' isn't really good enough, when in this 2 week timeframe I've ordered items from sydney and they have arrived, and sent items to perth and they have arrived, yet a parcel going 20-30kms has been 2 weeks without a scan.

My patience is wearing thin on this parcel.

            • -1

@JimmyF: Your other items have absolutely nothing to do with anything. The whole service is severely disrupted. Two items posted at the same time from the same place to the same location could arrive weeks apart.

My patience is wearing thin on this parcel.

Sellers patience is wearing thin because of selfish impatient customers like you. You need to stop buying.

              • @Krogers: True. Go buy from brick and mortar shop.

Auspost website clearly stated service disruptions! Once parcel handed to auspost, there is nothing seller can do.

                • -1

@bbqwer: Well if Kroger pulled their head in and read my first post on this comment instead of ranting, I blame the seller more so than Auspost and I'm aware of the 'delays' within the auspost network.

I've got an item sitting in this state for 2 weeks now, going Melbourne to Melbourne. The seller is blaming auspost for the delay, but I keep pointing out they haven't received the item yet and there are zero tracking updates to say auspost has even touched it yet.

As I pointed out its not Melbourne that is the bottleneck as I've had parcels come from sydney and sent parcels to perth within this time period, all moved swiftly through the melbourne parcel network.

I have a feeling my 'seller' lied and the item isn't in stock and hasn't been sent yet.

              • -1

                @Krogers:

Your other items have absolutely nothing to do with anything

They do, they are 'handled' within the auspost network and all have gone through Melbourne parcel handling sites.

I fully understand the system is clogged and delayed, but when a parcel going melbourne to melbourne hasn't arrived after 2 weeks, but yet items from sydney ordered on the same day, arrived a week ago, and items I've sent to perth have arrived in under 9 days of posting, something is wrong. That 'these' parcels are moving around ok but not mine.

                selfish impatient customers like you.

Oh yes how dare I ask if they have sent my package yet after TWO (profanity) WEEKS as the tracking shows no scans via auspost, just they created a postage label. Yes I'm a selfish (profanity) indeed.

The problem is most likely a lazy arse seller who didn't have stock so created a shipping label while waiting for the item to arrive into stock. Considering the item was so called in stock and ready to ship, I paid extra to have it so called shipped from melbourne so it arrived in a timely manner. You're right though, I should have went cheap and got it from sydney instead. It would have been here a week ago.

                You need to stop buying

Are you a seller on ebay? If so please list your store and I'll make sure I never buy from it, as you sound like an outstanding seller to be buying from.

                • @JimmyF: See my post below about a heater ordered from David Jones Sydney ship to Melbourne.

  • +1

I've had stuff delivered and the item said on its way (still in another state from memory), other times it was updated realtime

The system really is overloaded atm so give it another week.

On another note, I bought something from ebay which said location Aus, even had the return address as a suburb in Melb when they couldnt deliver (long story)
It took weeks, finally said they couldnt deliver to a parcel locker, I said I couldnt pick up from the depot during BH (airport - totally other side of the city), I couldnt get it redirected to another closer depot as I wasnt original recipient??????
seller was in China! Had used a forwarder and couldnt redirect either.
Paypal ended up refunding due to misleading information on their location

  • +1

yep I ordered a CPU from a seller advertising as 'Ship from AU'

    8 April order date
    14 April tracking number provided
21 April shipping info received by Aus Post
21 April shipping info approved by Aus Post
    27 April in transit
29 April item processed at facility
    1 May delivered

There's no way this thing was locally shipped

BTW, ordered a second CPU from a seller in China, it almost beat the first one that had a 3 week head start

    • See my post below.

  • +1

Also, I ordered two boxes of wine in one order from a Melbourne based supplier who has a fantastic delivery record (next day if ordered before 2pm.) They use a courier not AP. First box arrived as scheduled, second box 3 days later. The system is stretched folks. C-19.At least the tracking on that was spot on, unlike Aust Post.

  • Yes they can. I got stung myself. See https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/480993

  • still waiting on an item from China bought early March. said it landed in Sydney 6 weeks ago…

  • They're delivering on weekends for me like it's Christmas. It's backed up.

  • SHIPPING RIGHT NOW IS 100% BROKEN, been waiting on stuff from AUS for weeks, just says “shipping information received”

  • Hello, eBay seller here. We have a physical store in Melbourne and we have an eBay store to send things to people out of our area. I've had multiple occasions were the items have been picked up, and I've physically seen the courier pick the parcel up. And they forget to scan it, or don't scan it properly. Usually it's gets fixed when it gets scanned in at the depot. But not always. Aus Post is usually better at scanning at pick up. Aus Post have suspended they're cheap next day pick up option at the moment. So anything I send through Aus Post I now have to go and drop off at post office when I'm already understaffed. (not safe for some of our staff to work-we haven't laid anyone off)
If they've created a label, they've had to pay for it. You can't create a label for a package without paying for it.
As an eBay buyer, I usually avoid buying anything that I get a sense may be coming from China as half the time they will never turn up.

  • @bbinc
I'm not disputing that things are bad right now, I stated clearly that my eBay vendor lied.

the Auspost sticker shows the sender as a reshipper at Moorabbin Airport, and the 'shipping information' was not
given to Auspost until 2 weeks after I ordered. Then it took a week to get from that status to distribution in Vic,
and from there only a couple of days to me.
I'm not trying to whinge about slow delivery- I'm whinging that eBay vendors should be forced to tell the truth in their ads.
    cheers

    • Sadly ebay don’t have much incentive to shut this down. They’d lose too much money from big sellers.

    • When I suspect a Chinese seller pretending to be from Australia I usually check 1. Where they are registered in 2. Feedback.
      1. 95% of the time this is the best indicator of a fake Aussie Chinese seller. They are either registered in China or Hong Kong.
      2. They usually have tens of thousands of feedback as these are large sellers shipping globally. Also negative and neutral feedback percentage is relatively high and most of them being people complaining about long delays and items never turning up.

I would also check the delivery estimate. If this is over 2 weeks(during normal times) then you know they can't be in Australia. So better avoid and purchase from a legit local seller even if the item is few dollars more expensive.

      • agree with all of this- I usually check but must have been excited or drunk this time, oh well, did the upgrade on the weekend and I'm now rocking a 12 core Xeon in my Mac Pro butt plug
