Bing Lee eBay
Was looking for a USB Drive for my Nvidia Shield to run as a Plex server - currently using a slow 320GB spinning disk and it's not ideal.

Was about to buy this from binglee.com when I saw that this popular deal from last time is back

Other successfully managed to price match, but I cbf leaving the house to do that :P

Cheers

mine is still in the box

I purchased this in the last post and it arrived this morning.. slow shipping?

    • Wow. Hopefully mine doesn't take that long.

      • Mine still haven’t arrived. They just posted on friday

    • +1

1 order took 5 days, another took 3 weeks.
Seems like it depends if they have stock in the warehouse or if they have to get it from a store. It looks like they get the store to ship to warehouse, and then they ship it to you instead of getting the store to send it directly.

Why would a Plex server find a spinning disk slow?
I'm not sure this is faster in real life, despite the "up to" claims.

    • It's an old unreliable disk that I used to try out plex. Want something a little smaller (in physical size)

  • What's the actual write speed?

    • 30mb/s

      • +21

Not true. At least not under normal workloads. I can run a bench test in a bit. But expect ~100MB/s for writes.

For the record "mega" is big "M" (small "m" is "milli"), small "b' means "bits", and big "B" means "bytes". I'm assuming you meant to write "30MB/s"

Edit: Ran benchmark plugged into a "USB 3.1" port. NTFS formatted on a Linux computer. 100 x 10MB samples.

        Avg read: 313.9 MB/s (100 samples)
        Avg write: 106.5 MB/s (100 samples)
Avg access time: 0.31 msec (1000 samples)

Bought one in the last deal. I get around 65MB/s max. Read speed around 300MB/s.

      • +1

True I was editing my post with a second benchmark when you commented. I'd expect usual values in between my two benchmarks pretty much in line with what you've seen.

Edit 2: Seems the above post (claiming 30MB/s) wasn't as far off as I thought for vary large files (still more than 50% off tho). 10 x 1GB samples:

        Avg read: 337.1 MB/s (10 samples)
        Avg write: 47.1 MB/s (10 samples)
Avg access time: 0.32 msec (1000 samples)

h2testw confirms the speeds I get when transferring large files via USB 3.0 port (Can get better write speeds on USB 3.1 port as grb exhibits)

      Write 63MB/s
      Read 325MB/s

Great for my work as the files I write to it are being transferred from DVD at around 8MB/s and when I verify them on PC for MD5 check it absolutely flies! Highly recommended drive. Solid, fast, reliable & great value.

I've one of these on my keyring for ~6 months and have been very happy with it (bought ~$35). Solid and waterproof and speedy (but not the fastest around). I only wanted one decent drive for regular use and so far I've been happy with quality, performance, and value.

  • Thanks OP. Bought one. This a very good deal in comparison to other outlets. I still remember I paid $40 for 32GB USB 3 about 2 or 3 years ago.

  • +3

These aren’t that fast, but they’re not painfully slow.

    They also get insanely hot.

    I miss my sandisk extreme.

    • Quicker than the usb 2 drives at the front of Officeworks.

    • Vouch for the temperature. I've had one for ages but it died last week. Found another one on the shelf. Not sure the temp is a factor in these things dying?

  • +3

Cheers OP, missed out the last time around, snagged one now. Don't forget cashback!

  • I should go pick up my store order from the last sale in March Lol

  • +1

    Thanks OP, ordered one

  • +1

Worth noting that this is actually USB 3.0, as USB 3.1 Gen 1 and USB 3.2 Gen 1 are actually USB 3.0.

    • +1

      What's the difference?

      • 3.1 is twice the speed of 3.0, then 3.2 is twice the speed of 3.1

        • There’s a usb3.2? Or you referring to usb3.1 gen2?

            • +2

@MHLoppy: In conclusion USB has no idea how naming schemes are supposed to work. 3.1(gen1) can be the same as 3.0.. or twice as fast (gen2). And now I just learnt there's 3.2 but not only one but many 3.2 versions.

Honestly kinda sad I follow computers on the daily and apparently still didn't know all the USBs

              • @[Deactivated]: Yeah, that's basically what everyone said when it was released as well lol. Hopefully the next major version (4) isn't going to be quite as absurdly messy.

              • @[Deactivated]: To remember which is which, just refer to the gen number.

                • @NobalaKoba: Yeah I can remember (besides forgetting 3.2 existed) but USBs should be something simple for everyone not something you need a wiki page for. Talking about average people quickly grabbing a USB it's just stupid

                  • +1

@[Deactivated]: Completely agree. The current naming is only beneficial for retailers who can advertise their years old devices as USB 3.1 or 3.2 when they're actually 3.0.

    • It's a bit of a moot point considering this flash memory throughput is below 5Gbps anyway.

    • As I'm not in Sydney, it's $6 postage.

  • I'd buy one but that they won't send it to Regional SA.

  • Thanks OP, ordered.

  • +3

Just want one for recording off a smart TV, will it be decent for that?

    • I'd like to know this too

      • It would be overkill. But still work fine.

        • what capacity/speed would you recommend?

          • @snapper: From what I can see current DVB-T digital TV maxes out at ~32Mb/s = ~4MB/s. Even the cheapest bargain box USB drives should be able to do that.

I can't comment on their reliability over time, nor do I know how much space you need. But I think any drive you can find would be fast enough, you just need to decide how much space you need and how much you'd cry on the very (very) low chance a drive fails and you lose your recordings…

Please enter a quantity of 0 or less. You trollin me bro?

  • This item isn't available in the requested quantity. It may have been purchased already, or the listing has expired.

  • Thanks OP just bought one for TV recording

  • I only see a $24 for 64GB on their eBay store

  • just bought 2 pick up in store, hopefully all good. ill find out tomorrow.

  • I bought two last deal. I find them a bit awkward to grip to insert and remove from a usb port and to line up the port orientation but they're very usable with front top usb's.

    eBay back in stock.

  • +3

Just purchased through Bing Lee Ebay store for $29 - postage free

  • +1

I bought 2 in their last sale which incidentally is still the same price.
I use one for music downloaded onto it & it sits in my usb port in the car permanently.
No problems so far & that includes inside the car @ probably 55 degrees during our
    summer heat

    • How hot would you say it gets?

  • +1

A better option is a SanDisk Ultra 256GB from eBay for $59.79 posted from Australia (Genuine not fake). I have bought three of these over the past months!

    • +1

      How is it better?

    • +3

      Ebay link?

  • I bought this for $62.97 about two years ago, seems so cheap rn

Back in Stock on ebay, thanks
Also free postage with Ebay plus!

  • It says "There are no shipping methods available for that address", that is a piss off
What is wrong with the west of Tassie that Aussie Post won't deliver to?
Or Bing Lee won't put it in an envelope and post it to me because I live there!
I tried Sydney and I get the same t6hing
I tried a different browser and the same thing

I went onto live chat and I was # 29 so I put my email done, that was hours ago & no response
I thought signing up would help - nope
I just can't get one of these USB sticks

    Oh well, I already have 1 x 128GB, 1 x 64GB & 2 x 32GB of these BARS
Still, it is a good price and I like these BARs

  • Hi yes I've seen the SanDisk 256GB as low as $51.30 on eBay but problem there usually from China or seller refurbished, anyway my last 128GB SanDisk sdcard has failed so I think I'm only going to stick to Samsung memory sticks or devices 🤑😬😎👍

  • Has anyone got it shipped? My ebay order is shill "awaiting shipment" :(

    • +1

Yep, I received a notification from AusPost 2 days ago about it 'coming'.

      • Be prepared to do the wait mate, AP are atrocious at the moment.

I do a lot of on-line buying for my company and things that used to take 5-7 business days I'm not seeing for more than 3 weeks for the last month or so.

Most times the package seems to remain at point of origin for a LONG time, once it gets out of there the actual delivery seems to go OK. It's like the pick-ups are all queued up?

    • Mine says paid but not shipped. Ordered two from BL eBay.

    • It's on its way Most recent update Item processed at facility SYDNEY NSW Date & time Tue 5 May • xx:xx pm Delivery expected Wed 6 - Mon 11 May*

  • I checked 'my orders' and it only showed the other thing I ordered after the 128GB stick
so I go onto online chat. woo hoo, I am # 26. I get down to # 3 and the connection goes and it says do you want to reconnect,
so I do, and I am back to #26. it gets down to # 11 and guess what? I get disconnected again, should I reconnect and go back to the start?
What do you think I am. I ring up and use the call back feature

finally after about half an hour, I get a call back
he goes, "sometimes the orders play up and you don't see your orders there! Let that sink in ozBangers. some items show in your orders, some don't! well f*%# me
BTW, he also said it has been post and he will email me the tracking for the USB stick

I already wrote an email to the management to sack the IT dept on the weekend, I hope they respond to me, so I can also tell them this f*($ up

    • Username checks out.

Anyway, yeah, lots of people said it took a long time, over 4 weeks. I am in no rush - as long as I get it

      Hope you get yours soon

      • what's up shorty? leave the whale alone
I ordered mine over the weekend and now it is on its way
quick eh? it must of been something I did!

        • Squeaky wheel ;)

  • It’s back to $49 now
