Getting Internet at a New Home during COVID19 lockdown

I am about the move into a newly renovated apartment and I would just like to see what the best option for me is for getting internet. I know the building has got NBN NFC provisions but the unit does not have any NBN supplied equipment yet.

I understand that NBN installation is also being delayed at the moment so I'm not sure whether I should wait. However, with the whole COVID19 lockdown we are working from home, so having the internet is a must.

I've never lived somewhere with NBN before so I'm not sure how the technology works…

Should I sign up to Vodafone or Optus NBN that comes with 4G backup? How easy would I be able to change providers, say I'm not happy with a provider?

yes sign up with backup. I am with telstra and had a problem with mine, so wish I had backup, I am arranging a seperate device so I dont have to go through this again. I will have both NBN and another option to use the internet

    • Or if you go with a good ISP, you probably won't have dropouts and need 4G backup ;)

Most drop outs are not fault due to ISP. But you do need to contact ISP for a fix if a tech is required, or in my case easier just to wait a few hours, HFC seems to fix itself when it breaks itself.

On the whole, nbn installations should not be delayed right now if you are able to place an order with your telco.

The challenges the telcos are having with answering the phones are in terms of taking orders. Once you actually get an order in, the industry sitting behind that to go out and provision the connection in the field is largely not impacted by the current situation.

Unless the network construction in your building has not been completed yet, or there are delays to your building due to body corporate allowing access to get connections done, you shouldn't experience any issues compared with any other time.

  • As an fyi,
as long as nothing has changed in the last week

    and as an example:

Belong do not have an operable call center at the moment. It has made it a pain for some clients i assist.

An apartment that I am moving into did not have NBN (FTTB). I placed an order with Aussie BB and they advised connection time would be anywhere from 2 to 4 weeks given COVID. The next day I was notified that the connection date was in six days time… so one week from order date. I'm in Sydney if that makes a difference.

    comes with 4G backup

The 4G backup speeds are quite low, I believe - 12/1 for Optus and Vodafone, and 6/1 for Telstra.
