  • Was at russell street and saw this sign.

Was it for one of the 4 essential reasons not to be home?

I swear, your puns are the worst.

Getting food and watched a current affairs segment where uber eats rip off local businesses by taking 35% from the restaraunt and drivers eat your food.

So just trying to be active and help local businesses. Thats why went to city to get lunch myself.

Feels like a ripoff. Used to be heaps better in the 00s. Cheaper and they didn't shrink the items.

    • +3

That helps us a lot now. Many things used to be better

    • 00 was 20 years ago. At 5% inflation this meals is $5 dollars 00 monies.

    • +1

I agree and the new bread they use is far worse and costs them a lot less.

I'm going to be "that guy", McDonalds did not shrink any of their burgers (the only change was the big mac bun size changed a few decades ago, the internals didn't). Pretty sure the fries/drinks haven't gotten smaller.

Price has definitely gone up though. I remember in highschool (early 2000's) that when the GST came in they hiked it to $5 for a large meal, apparently it was $5.45 in 2002 (from googling online) for the standard price. Adding inflation should put it a smidge over $8 today and yet $9.95 is a "deal".

What type of low inflation u talking about?

        $5 at 2000 $5.45 at 2002. (9% in 2 years) Thats over $10 in 2020.

      • Yeah, it is hard to go back to verify. Maybe I've just gotten fatter.
Definitely feel like the hash browns have shrunk though.

I'm not a fan of the price hikes as they've felt like big jumps and cut down on overheads (like automated drinks machines which don't fill up to the top). Hopefully this means staff get paid decently.

I figure it's that, I remember when a large meal was actually a large meal, now I can smash one of those down and polish off a dozen nuggets to go with it. Could be with their attempts at being healthy over the years they've gone with lower calorie versions that feel less filling?

Price is terrible, maccas used to be cheap. Tried their "grass fed" burger the other day, $13.50 as a meal, and it was kinda ok, nowhere near as good as the basic burger from any burger joint. As you say, it's all mass produced and automated so I dunno where the cost is coming from (franchise fees, I'm guessing).

          • @freefall101: Used to be cheap and nasty, now it's just nasty. Again that might be cos I'm now an adult. Still love nuggets though.

It's annoying as the mcclassic prices are now what the premium angus line used to cost or thereabouts.

They changed the buns for all their burgers last year. About half the weight they used to be. There was a huge advertising campaign about hey they are cooking their burgers differently now.

        • -1

Only changed the size on the mcchicken and qtr pounders, I didn't know because I never eat either. Also changed the cooking to retain more juices, basically those automated machines. I dont eat it enough to have ever noticed the difference.

@freefall101: They changed the bread on all burgers

          • +1

@freefall101: you are WRONG. The big mac and cheeseburger buns were changed also.

    • Yes cheaper when wages were lower, and items were allegedly larger but people can't actually recall that; maybe when people were smaller they seemed larger…

  • What four meals ?
Big mac, Quarter pounder, McChicken and fillet'O'fish ?

    • +2

      What four meals ?

      They mean four snacks…

      • +1

        Very true

        • +3

At 3980kJ, I hope this isn't a snack for anyone

    • +1

The big mac could be bigger

If I'm going to get ripped off I would rather buy 2 Whoppers for $9.45 @ Hungry Jack's and bring my own water.

    • And fry your own chips at home?
