Recommendations for Outdoor Home Security System with 5 Cameras and Storage

Hi everyone

i am in the market for a new outdoor home security system.

Can anyone recommend any? I would preferably like 5 cameras and storage without having a monthly subscription. Would also prefer cameras that do not require recharging (or batteries).

At the moment i am thinking:

Do they both need to be installed by an electrician etc?

Would be great to hear your recommendations.

    Anything but Swann please.
    Go with Hikvision.
You won't need electricians/tradies if you know how to DIY (run cables/drill holes on the ceiling to make it pretty).

    • Hikvision is pricey but do you know if it’s only cloud based service? If it’s not I may purchase this as the reviews look good. Anything you think I should be aware of? This is my first system purchase.

Don't get newer Arlo pro 3 (2K) or Arlo Ultra (4K) as there are fees for cloud subscription after (3 months for Arlo pro 3/ 1 Year for Ultra) trial expires. Only legacy Arlo camera (Arlo Wire-Free, Pro, Pro 2, Go, Q, Q Plus, or Baby) has a 7 days free cloud recordings.

    • Thanks for that. Any recommendations?

      • Looks like every brand charges for cloud subscription anyway. Regardless, I like Arlo products as they are wireless, easy to setup and Arlo pro 3 has nice 2K video recording and colour night vision unlike the old ones. I am locked with Arlo’s ecosystem but not really happy to pay $14.99 every month for 5 cameras. AIso haven’t used any of Ring products but have heard about their cheaper cloud subscription which you could consider. Cheers

That Swann set is exactly what I picked up weeks ago, but for around $500 directlty from Swann, but through their Ebay site - CASHBACK. If you choose the Swann get the 4k version. Higher Image qaulity, but will be more expensive. Also that one that you are looking at is wired, but you will been to think about running the cables through roof or walls back to one point as all the cables need to go back to the box. ALl powered from the main console. Also think about other things as I just picked up a $20 second hand 19In LCD from GT to use for it. Plug and play, but as I say you do need to muck around and get cables down walls.

    Swann not a OZbs favourite.

    • Lol true dont no why people dont like them on ozbargain purchased my one around a year ago so far am very pleased dont no what the fuss is about or am i missing something.

Also have the same set but with 4 cams dam theyve come down in price. :)

Just a heads up when watching it from a mobile device when you have the picture on ultra clear the sound starts to stutter watching it live on standard picture no problems maybe has something got to do with the bandwidth or something.

      • Because its old tech. But it works.

    • because once you decide to do anything with your swan beyond hooking it up to the tv screen and watching live, you'll soon realise how bad the software is, much worse than a windows phone.

Eufycam have no subscription, records to local onboard HomeBase or Micro SD
Cams are wireless with up to a year's battery depending on model

    • Best no fuss system, I have found yet. I have the basic cameras 6 months battery still 1080 res. Not perfect but it works pretty well!

  • I had this for nearly 2years and still works.0nly less than $60.
Alfawise C20 1080P Smart Security IP Camera

  • Ring - works perfectly, $2 per months cloud backup. Easy to install. Ring should pay me $$.

Remote opening the garage door for my TP delivery, JK :)

    • Ha! Same(ish) setup I have. What garage controller are you using? I use Garadget, I just wish it had a Ring integration so I can open it while viewing the live view.

      • I got the TOOGOO WiFi Switch Garage Door Controller, which is ok, but I should of bought the AliExpress version with different chip set and would work HA easily.

  • Think long and hard about what ecosystem you are going to invest in, because the last thing your want is 5 cameras a year down the track, each one with a different brand/app etc. I'm personally invested in the Ring ecosystem. Having not used Arlo, Eufy, etc, It's hard to recommend anything else (PLEASE NO SWANN THOUGH). Just FYI with Ring (battery devices), preferably stay away if you're using Orbi Mesh system. They don't play well together so I have learned.

    • What is orbi mesh system? I googled and still confused. The problem with Ring is how expensive they are. Also I heard you will need to pay monthly for their monthly cloud subscription.

Great point in regards the different apps/brands. That’s why I am really cautious and patient about what to purchase. It is extremely hard on what to choose as there are so many options.

  • Hey mate, you don't need a sparky but in a legal point you can either do it your self if it's your own home or get someone with a security license.
Most if not all electricians (like my self) would know how to install it but legally who ever installs it should have a security license (like my self) unless it's your own place.

DIY yeah the ones you mentioned would work a treat.
There's some other diy brands I think that give you more bang for your buck if you want to do your research like Annke.

Or then there's the more reputable brands like mentioned hikvision or dahua (check out the starlight models, amazing night vision and with AI if you want the extra features and have the extra $$) but generally a licensed professional gets a good price on them but again if you you do your research Amazon, Ali and eBay may have them at good prices.

My system at home is dahua
dh-ipc-hdw2431tmp-as-0280b-s2 around the house (4mp but makes night look like day, all in colour)
dh-ipc-hdw5442tmp-as-led-0280b at the front (same as above but with AI meaning facial, age, colour clothing, clothing accessories and gender recognition)

    Door bell
Hikvision DS-KB6403-WIP which integrates with the dahua camera system

    • Thanks for the reply.

Is there a reason you went with dahua? Is there internal continuous recording rather than a cloud based back up?

      • Na no reason in particular.
Found them to be cheaper then hikvision but still the quality really good.
My supplier was showing off the dahua starlight and I was sold. Not sure if other brands have it at an affordable price.

My colleagues who work for different large security companies use and recommend as well. We've installed them in high end homes and even Centrelinks.

With the NVR/DVR it provides local recording with app ability to playback and live stream.

  • Arlo support is woeful

think repetitive bot chat support that takes days to reply and ask the same basic questions over and over again….

  • Hey OP, what system did you end up buying?

    • Got the Eufy Wireless 1080p Security Camera System 4 Pack
