Recommendations for a Sub $10,000 Car That Will Be Reliable

Hi, asking for a friend in hard times. He has to replace his clunky Holden Captiva. While he will miss the space and convenience of a micro SUV, he is willing to go down a hatch; but he requires a reliable vehicle with 5 doors to assist driving a disabled friend about.

Is it worth finding something at a slightly higher price and trying to negotiate down? e.g. https://www.drive.com.au/car-sales/buy-used-cars/sydney-nsw/…

Please go soft if I am way off, lol!

A Holden Captiva is a 'micro SUV'??

    • Trax?

    • The captiva 5 was a small SUV. Not mirco. Suzuki Ignis is micro.

    • might have pulled a trumpy there with the sarcasm - sorry. he loves it; I find it very cramped.

  • reliable vehicle with 5 doors

    Camry hatchback

    • Why a neg? sounds like a good thing, i didn't now they exist

      • The closest thing to a Camry hatch would be a rav4.

Check out something like this: https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/details/2012-nissan-cube-z1…

Japan accommodates disabled people more than any other country (in terms of factory manufactured disability vehicles).

    • Japan also does cars that have a passenger seat that can come all the way out of the vehicle and lower to aid in getting in and out of the vehicle. I'd recommend looking into one of these options depending on your specific needs.

And to all other TOYOTA fans, yes, TOYOTA do these vehicles too.

I would think they won’t get much for the craptiva
Is it actually worth downgrading and rolling the dice on another car?

    • they won't get much for the captiva; I would be surprised if he got more than $3000 for it; but the engine light(s?) sporadically turns on and holden can't figure out whats wrong with it. It would be a bad bad situation if the car breaks down with the two of them in it, hence he the most reliable car he can afford in these times.

RAV4? Camry isn’t a hatchback. Corolla could be a bit small.
I30 wagon if the still have them in the price range?

  • Any Toyota Corolla

  • You can probably negotiate for a brand new car (or near new) for around 10K -something small like a Mitsubishi Mirage or an MG

  • Shame a Camry wont suit.
Just get it serviced every 10,000k and drive forever.
Most other makes have weird and expensive quirks that some people find exciting so be warned.

Hi! just wanted to say thanks for your suggestions. One dealer offered $5k for the trade-in and he got a nice aurion for 13k (out of pocket $8000).
