Hi All

Hope you are all good in these tough times.

In the time of Pandemic with some extra time on hand, I thought of learning a new Language. Which language would you learn?

Need some suggestions in making my decision.

Also What do you do to keep yourselves busy? (add in comments)

      • +2

So we have the biggest economy, the greatest economy we have ever had, the highest employment numbers, the best employment numbers, best unemployment numbers, also, the best of everything.

      ….

What we inherited from the previous administration was totally broken, which somebody should eventually say, not only were the cupboards bare, as I say, but we inherited broken testing; now we have great testing.

Let me just say, very simply, I will put it very simply — the president of the United States has the authority to do what the president has the authority to do which is very powerful. The president of the United States calls the shots.

      ..

You're going to see. I don't want to tell you now, but right now, we have a very strong indication that we know pretty much, we have some good ideas.

Nice, but it would much a much shorter list to show him saying something coherent and useful.

      • Surely, you're not talking about CHUMP.
We thought we'd seen the last of the idiots when George W was got rid of.
He's making you idiots again, certainly not great!

He is the laughing stock of the rational world, what a plonker!

        Get real!

depends what your intended use is. purely just as a hobby and fun, or wanting to expand business and work opportunities.

what ethnic background you are will also help you learn a second language

I've been (slowly) learning German after living in Austria for a couple of years. It's also handy if you want to travel to Germany (wow!), parts of Switzerland, parts of Italy, and some other nearby countries. With English being a Germanic language, there a lots of similarities, but also lots of differences, in particular when it comes to gendered words. But that also comes down to practice and for some words a little pattern. Might be a good one to consider if travelling to any of those places interests you!

    Chinglish.

So I can understand the instructions accompanying the flat pack furniture I'm currently trying to build.

I have been learning Russian for 4 years, and I still cry every day. If I had to start over, I would learn Spanish. It's a widely spoken language, and they have so much great content to build your knowledge.

German or Italian. My two favourite countries to visit.

  • I would learn one of the major languages of Australia's wallet .
I was pissed off that my kids school only offered French and Japanese .

    Klingon

I've been studying Japanese for the last 5 years. IMO, any second language you study will benefit you. Its great for your memory and exercising your brain. Study a language based on the context that you can practice and use it.

The most enjoyable thing about studying Japanese for me is the Kanji (Chinese Characters) and hearing/understanding what I know in movies and anime. There is a lot of meaning in the symbolism and writing. I'll be studying for life.

Whatever the local lingo is. Foreign languages aren't new but old and backwards…

  • Indonesian - you know, that massive country right above us that no one knows much about (besides Bali if course).

  • Why do you want to learn? For fun? Something harder or easier? For travel purposes? Something similar or totally different?

    • Just for the sake of learning/fun.

  • Java, Python, C, Cobol still pays well.

  • Thai.

    Best place to retire.

    • And cheaper if you speak the language

  • What ever language you would think would be most useful to you. I deal a lot with Latin America for work so for me being able to speak Spanish would be helpful. I also deal with people in the Middle East so some Arabic could be useful too.

  • The language of luurve 😁

    • Do you use Barry White as your lecturer?

      • Nope. I'm planning on using that Aussie icon that is Costa. My wife loves freshly cut flowers from the garden and food ( in general , doesn't necessarily have to come from our garden).

        Lesson 1 : Grow a beard
        Status: In progress :D

        • Just make sure beard is soft not scratchy.

          • @try2bhelpful: It's so soft that I can't stop petting it :) The secret is beard oil.

    • It's just got to be FRENCH. Such a beautiful, melodic, and useful language. Ask Macron

      • I already speak French. The missus comes from a French-speaking country and I learned it to woo her.

        • Trying to learn it. Was planning to my host my 60th in France next year. Hmmm, might be delayed.

          • @try2bhelpful: I found it hard trying to learn the language from books and CDs ( we didn't have apps back in the early 2000s). I only really grew confident in the language when we moved to France. We were there as expats for 18 months.Practicing on the locals was fun and after a while , you sort of pick up the accent too.
How long were you planning on staying in France for?

            • @[Deactivated]: Only about 4 weeks. It is my turn to host the family. Not sure where we will be at September/October next year with travel. Fingers crossed but there is a hell of a mess to clean up out there.

  • Most people can’t spell in their own native language (English) and their punctuation is terrible. Maybe brush up on your English skills lol

    • English is not my first language.. However I have a good command over it. Wanted to learn a 4th language in the spare time I have

  • +2

the best language to learn is the one that you've a burning desire to learn. you can't really break it down to chose the most useful one or whatever because you will probably lose motivation to continue with it.
it is a lot of effort to learn a language
