NVIDIA Shield TV Pro 4K HDR Android TV Media Player $349 + $5.95 Delivery or Free Pickup @ Joyce Mayne

970

Shield Pro. $349 plus delivery.
Not really a bargain - but with the Shield Pro selling at up to 20% above on eBay and all stockists charging up around $399 its better value than elsewhere.

Still way cheaper than Computer Alliance which somehow got 59 upvotes after discount code:

Dollar has been smashed, and there is limited stock of these currently from China. Spoke to MWave and Computer Alliance and both said stock was limited.

Mod note: RRP is $399.95 on Nvidia's official site.

    • It does, you have to direct play it though. If you transcode it, you'll lose the HDR metadata and Plex won't do the tonemapping properly resulting in washed out colours.

      • Direct = from hard drive plugged into the shield?

        • I read it to mean not-transcoded.

  • At the $400 that most places are charging it's almost worth getting one of the older Dell and HP SFF computers and just using it as a HTPC. I've had a HTPC for years and years and just can't be bothered upgrading to this every time I get close to pulling the trigger.

    • True coreelec is your friend

      • CoreElec is specifically for Amlogic-based media players I think. It's what I use on my s905x box (which cost me about $60 from memory).

  • Ugoos AM6 pro or Plus with dual boot coreelec firmware awesome

Corelec run on anything that can run Linux..

  • I know its sold out but ill ask this anyway ready for the next sale. Is this worth it for the primary purpose of using steam in home streaming. Basically allowing my gaming PC to play games in the living room. My HTPC which is already my dedicated plex server just isn't powerful enough to make streaming games smooth

    • The shield can be used for streaming both using Steam and Nvidia gamestream.
I think it's overkill if that's all you want though, if you can find a steam link cheap or pretty much any android TV you should be able to use it.

The shield's major advantage is its power and codec support.
It can emulate Wii games and under and if you use Plex you can rest assured it should direct play almost anything you throw at it. It can also function as a transcoding Plex server itself.

If you already have a HTPC as a Plex server I would not recommend getting a Shield since you should be able to transcode pretty well and direct play from the HTPC too. If you can't find a Steam Link for cheap I'd consider any other android TV box since the steam streaming app should be available for all of them. I own the Shield 2015 but I've heard good things about the much cheaper Xiaomi Mi Boxes.

      • Okay thank you kindly

At this stage the ETA for the Pro version is late May/early June.

If you are happy to wait for this please let us know and we will place the order with our supplier.

Otherwise, we are able to offer a refund.

    We eagerly await your response.

    Thank you.

    • I got the email as well, I placed my order around 09:30 yesterday.

I'm probably going to opt for a refund, as it's only rrp, what do you think?

      • +1

I haven't decided yet, but I seriously doubt that the price will get any lower in the foreseeable future. I'm leaning towards waiting.

      • +1

Just a heads up RRP increased to $399.

        • Thanks for the info, I'll probably keep the order now lol.

  • FWIW, I have the pro, I recommend now the current non-pro, the remote is improved over the past models, it supports PS4 and Xbox One controllers, and it's regularly between $250-280 instead of $355, good $75 saved.

  • Can you run an ARC cable through a shield instead of the TV?

There's something wrong with the interface between my Hisense TV and my Sony soundbar. The TV would just randomly decide to not output sound to the soundbar and I'd have to constantly unplug the cable and plug it back in. And that only works 50% of the time, the other 50%, I just leave it unplugged for a day or two and plug it back in and it'll magically play audio through the soundbar again.
