Samsung Galaxy S20 - Can't Use Headphones?!

Does anyone else with this phone notice the same problem? For some reason I can't use any external headphones or earbuds. I tried using earphones from my old Huawei, and even though it fits into the jack (USB-c) it won't work. I get a notification saying the device isn't supported. Stranger yet, when I try to use my $200 headphones, the same thing happens. The headphones use the old 9mm headphone jack so I try to run it through a simple adaptor (which works for literally every other device I have), yet it won't work on the S20.

Given how popular this phone is I'm confused as to whether this is an isolated issue on my device or if the phone/UI was simply designed this way. Has anyone else run into this or could you possibly test yourself?

This is either a major design flaw or a move straight out of Apple's handbook to lock people into buying their own accessories.

  • $15 bud style Sony's and the anko branded adapter from Big W work fine

  • I know some phones have different pin layout for usb C to 3.5mm. Yeah its annoying because there isn't a set standard. You'll have to buy the adapter for s20.

    • Oh OK, didn't know this existed. Like John Kimble said above, I'm assuming this has an in-built DAC converter since the phone itself doesn't have one.

        DAC converter

        A Digital-to-Audio Converter converter?

He will probably have to use this ATM machine card and put in his PIN number to pay for it.

          • @pegaxs: Tbf PIN Number is a pretty common colloquial term.

            • @SlavOz: It's still wrong though

            • @SlavOz:

              pretty common

Yeah, that's why I've started to use my Personal PIN Number.

(OzB neggers are such a humourless bunch that it's funny.)

        • You mean Digital-to-analog converter?

          • @cheesecactus: Ah yes. Digital-to-Analog Converter converter.

I'm sure OP would rather use those $7 bluetooth earphones over his $200 headphones.

        A $200 headphone that doesn't have DAC is a $200 paperweight.

        • I don't think you understand the problem here
