Great Work Desk?

Anyone got any advice for a great work desk? I've had a dreadful one from Ikea for years (glass) and now that I'm working from home it's a nightmare to clean, uncomfortable, looks ugly, and just generally difficult to match anything with. (think thick, black glass with hibiscus flowers on it…yikes)

Any good deals on some decent, aesthetic desks? I love the Scandinavian look but they are pretty hard to come by for under $1000, and standing desks are nice too mind you. I was going to make a floating desk….but it becomes a fixture and I don't know how long i'll be in my apartment for

Anything nice looking, function and with enough clearance underneath for a PC tower that folk can recommend

South of $600 would be perfect

Thanks a lot

Is Ikea Scandinavian enough for you?

About 264 results in the desks category.

    • Oops - I meant to say "Isn't Ikea Scandinavian enough for you".

Unfortunately not but I appreciate the suggestion. I've been through the desks at ikea a few times and I find them a bit too "melamine" looking, desks that are fine for kids bedrooms or console desks for hallways but not so much for a home office.

I've also had an ikea desk for sometime and just not a huge fan of the quality, ergonomics or colour options of the desks there. Bit boring, bit samey, not really an 8-10 hour a day desk, if that makes sense

        Thanks though

Put an Ikea Karlby kitchen counter top on a pair of Alex drawers like everyone else on r/battlestations

    Hi,

This floated past me a few days ago.

    First, read the story…

I bought a rapid span desk with return and a desk lozenge, desk is very solid.

  • Aesthetics will differ person to person but I can vouch highly for this desk

Easy to clean, extremely solid, easy to match with everything.

I would be looking at something like this design. Electric desks are good for adjusting the height. We’ve got a decent one from Costco but it has a cross bar which interferes with your foot position. Get a good office chair as well.

  • I was after a couple of basic, but good quality desks and went with https://www.officestock.com.au/desks/office/anvil-white-stra…

Ordered on a Saturday and arrived on a Tuesday. Pretty easy to set up, also got some office chairs from them and they all seem sturdy (and I think each has a 10-year warranty). Happy so far.

  • I just bought one of these:

    Depends what style you want.

  • All great suggestions thanks! Still searching but it's given me a lot of ideas, appreciate it!

    • Best of luck with the search.

    • So, which one did you go with?

For Home in 2020: I ended up purchasing a solid wood dining table from Aldi for $199 (https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/aldi-dining-table). Was an amazing deal, not sure if it was a return but it was in perfect condition and finished to a very really high quality (which was the biggest surprise). I thought it must have been veneer/MDF, but it was all solid American oak, even the cross bars and bracing. Fits perfectly, and the wooden bracing underneath allowed me to hide all the cabling neatly, and it's very roomy so I can spread out much like my office desk. (It's not nearly as 'lanky' as it looks in the photos either)

Bought another one off marketplace for $100 and made shelving out of the top, copying https://www.rjliving.com.au/buy-light-wall-shelf-70cm-oak.ht… pretty much exactly. Got 6 shelves out of it and could have pretty easily a few more if I was being super efficient.

Aldi out did themselves there, they've had a lot of crap since but if you can find one on gumtree/marketplace you can make a few adjustments and have an awesome desk (albeit not adjustable)

At work I have a Herman Miller Carafe, basically the same thing but just ridic expensive but I didn't pay for it sooo….but it's a nice looking alternative and will hold its value though
