They planned a recycle program where they said if u have dated equipment we will give u a discount on new stuff. The problem everyone had was to be eligible you had to brick your old device. Dumb.
That was always in place and was never an issue.
THe controversy was they were going to stop updating all previous gen hardware. Which would have been fair enough maybe, given the age of some of the hardware - except they decided to reraise themselves and block updates to all your sonos equipment if you had any previous gen hardware on it. And then tagged on a 'but hey check out our upgrade program'.

Yeah, I was gonna get the Ikea Sonos speaker and pairing it with a Sonos One (which is the same principle) but at this price I’m just gonna get the One

Sonos is a great device with fantastic sound quality, unfortunately, this model does not have Bluetooth and it must be controlled through Google Assistant which it has a very poor quality on the mic side. All Google speakers respond perfectly fine but Sonos doesn't.
Supports Googles Assistant, Amazon Alexa and Apple Airplay, and can also be controlled via the Sonos app for iOS and Android.
The SL is $219 for those of us who don't like to be spied on.
