PSA - No ANZAC-day substitute Monday off in all states/territories, exWA & ACT.

Seeing as ANZAC day falls on the 25th of April (Saturday in 2020), the public holiday doesn't carry to the Monday except for the aforementioned WA & ACT. It's still a public holiday on the Saturday, so there's restricted trading.

Thankfully, commenting on OzBargain is considered an essential service so we may continue through social distancing.

Quite possibly to "protect" businesses from having to pay penalty rates to those who would have been working on the public holiday Monday. Stops them from having to take a double hit - closing on the Saturday and paying penalty rates on the Monday.

Not particularly - in QLD/NSW, if ANZAC day falls on a Sunday, the Monday is a day off. It's just because it lands on a Saturday this yr round. The same was for 2015 ANZAC day, I can't remember which ones before that

      • Before that I think the holiday was moved to the Monday.

        • +1

As per the NSW Public Holidays Act 2010, it's been like this for a while. A NSW Government official said:

Consistent with past practice, there have not been additional holidays on the Mondays following an ANZAC Day Saturday in 1987, 1992, 1998, 2009 and 2015.

I'd assume other states are similar.

          • @ThithLord: So this PSA is for something which has always been the case. ¬_¬

            • +1

@Scrooge McDuck: Apologies for not making this obvious in my original post, but - it was a PSA for the people whom thought it was going to be a long weekend (myself included).

          • @ThithLord: Not in vic, last time anzac fell on Sunday we didn't get that extrq monday off

          • @ThithLord: so mskeggs was right, it was before then

      • "in QLD/NSW, if ANZAC day falls on a Sunday, the Monday is a day off." It is the same in SA as well. In SA every Sunday is a public holiday.

  • WHAT!! :*(

    • Yep!

      • +1

But..but..that means no more public holidays until June nooooo. You ruined my day.

        • +1

Monday 4th May is Labour Day in QLD so we have that

          • @ThithLord: I’m not in QLD thank goodness (no public holiday in May is worth enduring that :P)

            • @Pecan: lol but how's that 'Rona treating the great state of NSW?

            • @Pecan: NSW has two less public holidays than Victoria so there's that too.

          • +1

@ThithLord: May the 4th be with you

        • Is it just me, or does a public holiday now seem like a waste anyway? I mean, what can you do? "Ooo, I have the day off. Let me go to …… the lounge"! Or, "I have no job atm, let me go to the aaaaahhhhh backyard".

  • +5

Well for once WA gets something the other states don't.

How do them Krispy Kremes taste now, NSW & VIC? (Ours are still somehow worse though, I swear).

It's been a strange time for WA. No bush fires last year, a lot less wild weather in the past few years compared to the other states and now far fewer Coronavirus cases and less Corona-related madness/restrictions compared to the Eastern States.

Occasionally, very occasionally, WA's insignificance and isolation do work to its advantage, even somehow avoiding the notice of Mother Nature and indiscriminate pandemics.

    • 2018 flooding in the kimberley I think that counts as wild weather!

    • +3

As a Tasmanian, thank you for your GST monies.

  • +4

Hasn’t this always been the case?

    • +1

I believe it's been the case since 2010 but I may be wrong on that. It's not the case for all public holidays, so it's expected that some people would not realise, me included. But now I remember the horror of the same thing happening in 2015.

      • I’m not sure how long so you could be right on 2010. And yes it definitely does sneak up on you every year it happens!

    • +4

Yep, absolutely - I was providing a PSA in case anyone, like me, was looking forward to a long weekend without realising there isn't one!

      • +1

        Sorry for your loss 😂

It is a painful realisation as yes it doesn’t happen every year. I’m one that counts down the public holidays from 1 Jan so I’ve had months of my mental prep!

  • +1

ACT, QLD, SA & WA are the only states that will get a public holiday on the Monday next year. The other states will miss out again.

  • +2

If ever there was a time to miss out on a long weekend it is now!

  • -1

who needs holidays when you cant go anywhere

    • +5

Just nice to have the Monday off - I'm lucky enough to still be working at the moment, and working bloody hard

      • +2

Yeah this. Some of us have never been busier in the past 5 years. I wouldn't mind taking additional leave now, but I literally can't because I'm an "essential resource".

        • +1

The rest of us gets called essential workers and you get essential "resource"? That's cold.

  • Wonder if in the future there'll be a public holiday for survivors of COVID-19

  • At this moment I'd prefer to have it as a working day.

    I'm a Contractor.
I would be at home doing crap anyway, might as well be working from home.

  • -1

And yet again our focus is on the 'whats in it for me' public holiday.

  • +1

WA getting something nice for once! Still get shafted in the GST carve-up.

    • +1

You win some, you lose some!

  • +4

As if 2020 wasn't bad enough.

    • +2

Tell me about it - Scomo up in the polls after completely fudging Australia's response to the Corona, now this!

      • He pretty much boosted the dole and gave everyone on job keeper a $1,500/fortnight minimum paycheck even if they earnt less than that before. Of course he is up in the polls, he just won the vote of the whole lower class while still pleasing the 1%.

        • Mate … do you think it's a good stimulus? Do you think they've done well, here? It's fricken impressive, isn't it?

Do you know whom designed this stimulus package?

Greg Combet, former Labor minister under the Gillard government. The LNP went crawling to a former Labor party member (remember the LNP won three elections sh1tting on Labor for their stimulus package that saved Australia during the GFC) to design a stimulus package for them.

The LNP were openly mocking the idea of a job keeper style stimulus just days before it was passed. Which one is it, Nurries? Are we to congratulate the LNP and Morrison's government for their complete lack of transparency?

It was the Unions whom pushed for this type of stimulus from the very get go. That's the reason the JobKeeper stimulus was introduced.

          • @ThithLord: Sorry, you must have misinterpreted my comment. I think the stimulus is shit. Look at my previous comments on OzB and you'll see. This stimulus gives to the lower class, bails out the upper class and (profanity) over the middle class (arguably the people who need the stimulus the most).

Public holiday or no public holiday. It’s just another day for millions of Australia nowadays. It will have more meaning the sooner we get back to work.

  • Shame! Could use a day off from work and homeschooling the 3 kids :/

  • -2

Um, you dolts are aware that ANZAC day is not just about heading to the shops and beach? As per Villanelles words…get a real, life! https://youtu.be/aJnXFdl-bmc

  • I voted 'Fair Enough'.

    I also live in WA.

  • +1

Least we forget. For all australians and new zealand service people who have fallen during war. We dont need another day to remember them.

    • But let me guess, you'll still proudly take the day off on ANZAC day?

  • +1

My enterprise agreement explicitly lists the following Mon will be a day off if ANZAC day falls on a weekend

  • +1

Double bubble Sat PLUS double bubble Monday!!!

  • Merged from Why is there no in lieu day for the ANZAC day public holiday (weekend)?

    Hi all,

Just to start with, respect and tribute to all ANZAC soldiers who fought in the wars to make Australia the country it is today.

Why do we not have a day in lieu for Anzac day (classified as a public holiday) when it occurs over the weekend? Just a random question.

    Thanks

    • +1

I read on here somewhere we only get the in lieu public holiday when Anzac day falls on a Sunday, no a Saturday however still varies state to state

    • Public Holidays are gazetted by the relative state governments.

Surely it doesn't matter for this one (and others that are on a specific date e.g. Christmas Day / Boxing Day / New Year Day on certain weekend days are treated the same way)?

    • Because you are not in WA. Hahahah.

      • +1

        and ACT

    • stupid post

    • I googled your forum topic and all the top hits explain why.

What a waste of time making this topic.
