For those who are interested, I thought I'd also note that this hand sanitiser contains 70% alcohol. I don't know why they don't list that though.

    Source: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5091001/

    • Is that good?

        • No it's not lethal, maybe if they drank the whole thing they'd vomit and feel sick. It's just alcohol and some moisturiser.

          • -8

@njastar: nope, even alcohol has different types, and the main type in hand sanitiser is ethyl alcohol which is stronger than most hard liquors. not saying that a kid will die for certain if they had a small amount of it but they could.

            • @hongerwonger: Google what type of alcohol is in a beer…
I'll save you the trouble, its the same type.

              • -8

@downbythecreek: thanks, now google the % of that in beer vs hand sanitiser. i'm not trying to be a smartass, it's just what's been reported in the news, with a spike in children being poisoned ingesting hand sanitiser now that everyone's obsessed with using it

                • +9

@hongerwonger: Ok, well let’s look at it, this small bottle contains 70% ethanol, so approx 35ml of pure ethanol. At 0.8g/ml that is approx 28 grams of ethanol.
A standard drink is 10 grams of ethanol, so this small bottle contains approx 2.8 standard drinks. Or about 3 mid strength beers.

I’m not suggesting you let your toddler consume it, but you don’t need to go rushing them to the ER if they have a small amount. It’s also not a different type of alcohol to the stuff a lot of people consume freely.

                  • +2

@downbythecreek: I'm currently using limestone coast runway cabanet sauvignon 2012. Which is best. At the moment I don't care as I'm pissed

                  • -3

@downbythecreek: Obviously alcohol of ALL types is still very poisonous for small children. A 2 year old drinking the full 50ml of this hand sanitizer would be the equivalent of an adult drinking 30 beers at once. Please don’t take my comment above to mean you don’t need to seek medical advice if they consume it.

          https://www.health.nsw.gov.au/news/Pages/20200412_01.aspx

NSW Health is reminding parents that alcohol-based hand sanitiser is dangerous if ingested, particularly for children.

NSW Poisons Information Centre said while hand sanitiser is an important tool in stopping the spread of COVID-19, it has seen a spike in the number of calls due to hand sanitiser exposure incidents, mostly by babies and young children ingesting it at home.

Genevieve Adamo, Senior Poisons Specialist from the NSW Poisons Information Centre said even a small amount can be harmful for young children and babies.

“Hand sanitiser products should be stored safely and out of reach of children. When they are used by young children it should be under the supervision of an adult. Washing hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds is also a safe and effective option to help combat COVID-19,” Ms Adamo said.

          • +4

@lysp: No one is arguing that it's not dangerous, but to say it's lethal if children drink a small amount of it is not true. I doubt there has been a case of death or even serious damage.

            • @njastar: I wasn't really commenting on that - just adding additional information - that there has been a noticeable increase in poisonings as a result of this crisis.

And then he says "I really can't help you if you don't understand how the English language works."

yes and no - people claim hand sanitiser without alcohol is useless at fighting virus. but on the other hand, if children ingest even a small amount of this it could be lethal

                just slap yourself, loudly!

        • -6

if children ingest even a small amount of this it could be lethal

Why would you give it to a child?

      • +4

Yes, it is good. Anywhere between 60-80% is usually recommended.

        Source on that: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK513254/

        • Also good to note that alcohol and other solvents evaporate over time.

This happens with normal use. Leaving the lid open will cause this to occur quicker.

As the alcohol content goes down, the effectiveness reduces which is why these have a "used by / best before" date.

So if the starting alcohol content is on the lower side, it becomes less effective quicker.

    • +1

Thank you. I've been trying to find out the alcohol percentage of these for weeks.

    • The article you linked to was done in 2016, before the COVID-19. It basically only analyses anti-bacterial activity.
Our main concern is COVID-19 virus.

As I said in my original post, "considering the current state of things" the definition of what's a good deal tends to not be exactly what it was 6 months ago.

Coles have had it in stock in several stores I've been to in the the last week. There is no shortage.

If not then it is the best deal available.
There are plenty of products here on OzB which were cheaper earlier, but they are still a great price today.

I think, there's enough sanitiser available around now

still can't find any near me

        • +9

Great. Would you kindly be able to show us where exactly you're referring to then?

        • +1

Yep, pretty much every social media ad I'm seeing at the moment. There will be a huge oversupply soon so don't buy to stock up.

All these companies from different industries are switching to sanitizer to try and turn a profit while nobody is using their products, it's not going to end well for them.

still can't find any near me

Last 3 Coles I've visited over the last week all had it at each register… Limit of 2 per person.

    • Which brand?

      • Careline

        • Costco careline brand actually smells good it had a scent compare to the other alcohol smell i have..

@XucCac: But…I like the alcohol smell.

          • @XucCac: Yeap! Excellent product!

PS: I bought some of their shares on the ASX!

    • Whereabouts is the hand sanitiser generally located in Costco? Had a look last time I was there but don’t know whether I was looking in the wrong spot or they just didn’t have any.

      • At each counter, if available
