      I can’t say I like the 32bit. 🚽

A bit annoying that it doesn't have USB on this model.
I don't want to pay so much more for the Pro…

      Buy an old model.

      • +1

Just because it's older doesn't mean that it isn't better than this cut down version of the new release. At least it's closer to what the Pro version of the new model is. The new Pro model is just an updated version of the previous Shield release with a newer chipset. Tegra X1 vs X1+ but not so much difference. At least the older model has two USB ports.

This model has no playback ability from a hard drive or flash drive. The older model can do both.

        • Yeah, I've got the old model already and agree that it is absolutely fantastic!

The newer model is more powerful (newer processor) and has Dolby vision though.
And to be fair it does have microSD slot for expansion.

I'd also agree that if you find the older model for a good price, it's more worth it.

          • @C-Nut: True. It may have a microSD slot but you go trying to find say a 500GB or let alone 1TB microSD card and even if you did it would cost a small fortune. You can easily find 1GB, 2GB portable hard drives for under $100. You can't fit many large videos on say a 128GB microSD card. The microSD slot would only be useful for music, pictures or a few games which is likely what it was designed for.

      • I'm after the older model. Just waiting for them to go on sale then I'll pull the trigger. They seem to be hard to find now.

BTW Melbourne metro delivery by Auspost eparcel is free, but not in stock currently. Stock ETA today.
You can still order it though and it will ship when stock arrives.

I got one. It is very good price. New remote is so much better than previous version. Work seamlessly with my Sony TV

    "Apples vs Oranges"

    She like apples to oranges
B***h that phrase don't make no sense
    Why can't fruit be compared?!

    • Double negative intended?

    • I'd compare Apples & Apricots, but Apricot never made a media player.

(ooh, who's nerd enough to know)

      • Dick Smith was!

For those wondering, here’s an apple vs orange comparison (pardon the pun)

    I just want that remote!

    • I want that Remote also. People on eBay are selling them too expensive.

    • The remote is perfect. Amazing.

i gotta say the vodafone TV doent's leave me wanting at all as far as a media centre goes. and at 72 bux makes most sense for those just looking for basic functionality… id go as far as saying unless your gaming your probably not going to notice too much of the difference. with the massive disclaimer i haven't used the shield.

i did build an android x86 box, and i gotta say the vodafone tv is just better than that for the simple fact of the remote and everything just works.

    • +1

I have 2 x Mi boxes and don't game. They are good enough for my needs. I would love to give the Vodafone box a shot but don't really need one atm.
I really think where android boxes win over Apple is apps like TeaTV or TyphoonTV (disclaimer: no experience with apple TV boxes)

      • +1

Just note if you give the Vodafone TV box a go and update it to the newest firmware then you lose USB playback from NTFS partitions. Unless you use a program like JS USB OTG.

        • -1

Or just access NTFS drives over network.

        • +1

The first thing that happens when you setup a new box is it updates too

          • @Redbull1609: I'm pretty happy with mine since it updated

            • +1

@darkly: Most people would be, it you were planning on connecting an NTFS drive directly, you wouldn't be.

My point is that out of the box as a new user, you don't have the choice to update or not.

  • Any deals for pro, cheapest I have seen is $399, don't wanna buy it at RRP 😉

    • Have a look, let us know.

  • No usb, no thanks.

  • Is nvidia shield tv old is better as this one has only x1+ processor and 2 gb
    Old one has 3 gb

Old one gaming edition is for around $315

    • The Shield Pro version has 3GB of RAM though. The same as the previous 2017 model.

The non Pro version is just a wanna be cut down version with 2GB of RAM. It's not really made for any thing other than internet streaming.

For gaming you want either the 2017 model or the new Pro version.

      • Non-pro can't do GeForce game streaming?

        • It might but i was talking about the big title games you can purchase, then download straight to the Nvidia Shield through the Nvidia store on the Shield and play it. Like the Borderland games on it not sure how those would go on 2GB of RAM as opposed to 3GB as it might get a bit laggy at times with lesser ram. Trust me extra RAM helps with larger games.

          • @hollykryten: Gotcha.
Didn't realise that was an option/feature.

I bit the bullet, and bought this deal, to try occasional-gaming on the PJ in the home theater (apart from obvious nas/netflix streaming) . Can't see any other way of wiring/doing it, without moving entire setups.

Now to finally decide on a controller, after decades of no consoles.

            • @Ulysses31: Nvidia Shield supports the Sony Dualshock 4 or Microsoft Xbox One S controller. Both are great.

    • Actually $293 pickup, via your link.

But $239 is the benchmark price.
