Minecraft was never free. There may be some maps which were given out for free but the base game was never freeware.
Also don't pay $30 for it. You can get Minecraft for Win 10 for $4.50.

Just remember that the Win10 version (Bed Rock) is different to the Win10 Java version. The Java version never seems to be cheap. They are also not cross compatible, but the bedrock version is cross compatible with the Ipad, Switch, Xbox and PS4 versions.
I got my Minecraft Win10 off Ebay for about $5, very happy with it.
The advantage with the Java version is the amount of mods you can get for it.

In Windows 10, just login with the account that has purchased it just to install it.
Once installed, you can run it not logged into the Microsoft account and a few people can play. I have joined 3 people up but it can have 8 on a local LAN game I think.
When not logged in you need to purchase (for free) the maps etc from Marketplace again and it will download them again (each computer that has Minecraft installed). You do not need to login with the Microsoft account to download free maps.

@highon2str: Yep, one person starts the game, the others join the LAN game, up to 8 people can be in the world.
It's fun with the kids creating, had some great laughs.Can play hide and seek, a games likes wheres wally, you need to turn off the display the name on top of the character though.
Better than Lego because you have unlimited blocks, and Lego is expensive!

It gives you a code to activate the game through the Microsoft Store on Windows 10. You click on the three dots to the top right in the Microsoft Store and then select redeem a code. And then you can download the game.
