Travelling to Pick up Pet 5 hours away: allowed at this time?

Hi there. We have placed a deposit and going to pick up a pet.
Going from Melbourne into Albury NSW.

Would we be able to drive up for compassion reasons/ care of animal?

Or would we cop a fine?
Have talked to Victoria COVID line, they said it may be ok
Police have said most likely not

What does everyone else think.
We could use a transport company but would rather see the puppy and pay for it ourselves before we take the dog.
Do not want to get scammed

Number 1, I wouldn't try during the Easter weekend blitz.

    • i guess lockdowns don't look like ending soon

  • Your interstate numberplate will stand out like dog balls

    • +1

Not likely in Albury where half the locals live in Wodonga (VIC).

  • +1

    No

  • fan tas tic ti ming mat eee…

    • +1

yeah put a deposit on 8 weeks ago and then it all blew up!

  • +2

I wouldn't be taking the chance, especially over the Easter period.

With the small amount of traffic currently on the roads you'll be a easy target for Police number plate recognition (ANPR) devices

  • +2

This plan has got fur on it.

"Police have said most likely not"
given they enforce it, why don't you go with that
    .

    • i think the cops don't know what they are doing
all the fines are being rescinded:

      1. learner driving with mum
      2. car washing at night
      3. bike riding 20 minutes away from home

New South Wales restrictions allow people to travel to care for their pets.

    • We could use a transport company but would rather see the puppy and pay for it ourselves before we take the dog.

Not their pet yet and OP is in VIC so the NSW Public Health Order is irrelevant until they cross the VIC/NSW border.

      • The buyer has paid a deposit which is an intent to buy and part of the settlement. They don’t need to have possession of the property to care for it.

VIC travel restrictions may be the only problem they have at this stage.

        • +1

The buyer has paid a deposit which is an intent to buy and part of the settlement. They don’t need to have possession of the property to care for it.

I had a more careful look at the order. The part you refer to about care does not apply to pets:

          • 9 providing care or assistance (including personal care) to a vulnerable person or providing emergency assistance

It's debatable whether picking up a pet constitutes as a reasonable excuse. It might fall under:

          • 1 obtaining food or other goods or services for the personal needs of the household or other household purposes (including for pets) and for vulnerable persons

Then again, I highly doubt that the police will accept travelling 5 hours to pick up a pet as a reasonable excuse. I still think it's safer for OP to go with the transport company. It'll cost much less factoring in time, petrol and potential fines. If he/she fears getting scammed, then there are ways to minimise the risk e.g pay for transport then the full amount once the pet arrives, Zoom/facetime with the seller with questions in mind.

          • @fossilfuel: Thanks we are looking at this option now. just a pain to not be able to pick up the puppy
Deposit 8 weeks ago before this all blew up

  • Melbourne into Albury
    5 hours away

Which way are you going? Albury isn't that far from Melbourne.

    • -1

Albury isn't that far from Melbourne

Someone needs a geography lesson, Albury isn't even in the same STATE as Melbourne.

      • +1

It's still only 3 hours way.

        • That depends on hoonery skills or lack thereof

        • -2

          The claim was

Albury isn't that far from Melbourne.

3-5 hour drive, isn't 'that far' in my books. The fact that Albury is in NSW, you know a different state to VIC that Melbourne is in, should give it away. But looking at the neg votes, it seems not.

      • -2

        Melbourne, Florida?

    • +3

MS is right, Albury is not 5 hours from Melbourne

  • Neither is Wodonga and that's 12 minutes away.

    Melboune to Wodonga 320ks. 3 1/2 hours.

  • You got a black car?
Put on a balaclava and go at night with the lights off

  • Don't think its convincing enough. Consider that it is not and then take the risk.

  • You wouldn't be getting a ShihTzu by any chance?

I had mine flown up from Albury a few years ago.

    • Albury. The ShihTzu capital of Australia?

Albury / Wodonga has about 100k people.

  • +2

If its a business still operating is that not classed as essential? Its ridiculous that 1000 people can walk past each other on a footpath everyday but someone cant stay in their car for a couple of hours. I wouldn't be going if its just some random selling a dog though.

  • +1

I agree the laws are so offputting.
You cannot get into your car drive to pick up a dog and not see anyone, or even go sit in a park alone.
But yeah lets all go seafood, go coles and bunnings to support business

    • +1

The laws are offputting because it inconveniences you. I think it's highly inappropriate and selfish to travel 5 hours to pick up a pet. You're more than welcome to proceed but if you get fined, I hope those funds go to PPE for healthcare workers because they're the one's on the front lines fighting the pandemic while you're driving 5 hours to pick up a pet.

You cannot get into your car drive to pick up a dog and not see anyone, or even go sit in a park alone.

Exactly because it's non-essential travel. A pet is not a neccessity. You don't need to sit alone in a park.

But yeah lets all go seafood, go coles and bunnings to support business

Yes because everyone has plenty of fruit/veggies they can pick and animals they can slaughter in their backyard at any time for food. Or they can use alchemy to turn grass and tree bark into toothpaste and insulin. This is not about supporting business, it's about going to shops to get the essentials.

      • +2

mate, i understand that what I'm doing isn't exactly the best thing. We put a deposit 8 weeks ago and then this all blew up!

yes food shopping is essential but what isn't is everyone running around going shopping once every few days.
Do ONE big shop once a week and stay home if possible

bunnings and the home renos are just as non-essential
weeding, putting up a deck, painting? same

as essential as caring for a dog that you will pick up to look after. its called compassion

before people judge lets all look at what we are all doing and just because the cops/govt say so doesn't nessarillary mean its the safest way
i would go put petrol, see one person, see the owner, put more petrol maybe and go home thats all the social people i see
but sure lets go get jigsaws, some bunnings plants and go down aisles with 50 people in them at coles

        • +1

Travelling from one side of the state to the other is a whole different story.

  • +1

    No

  • -2

Its only a $1652 fine. Go for it. Cop the fine if you get pulled over and they don't accept your reason. Your going there and then driving straight back right.

  • we placed a deposit 8 weeks ago when the pup was born and now have to pick him up

i guess noone knew how this would all blow up so quickly
we are now looking at transport or even losing the deposit

    • Everyone is expected to make sacrifices. Some people have lost their jobs. Don't try and convince me it's of vital importance, you have to tell this to inspector plod. I doubt you will find an epidemologist that would back you up travelling between states to purchase live animals during a pandemic… to save a few bucks.

    • Just fly the little one out if possible to you. Especially in these circumstances.

  • +1

This is where the rules are not perfect. Driving 3 hours to pickup a pet is much lower risk of spread and infection than going to any shop or workplace.

Of course the goal is to reduce non essential travel, but of people are able to get gardening and home hardware and that is considered essential (remember the PM's wife went to by puzzles and he deemed that essential), then its not a big stretch to suggest picking up a pet that had a deposit paid for it, 8 weeks ago as being a high risk activity.

I really think the messages should be around reducing high risk activites, rather than labelling them as essential. Or maybe do both. Now I'm not saying the OP should go collect the puppy, but they should at least show they've thought about it, ie only one person goes to collect the puppy and its in a transport container. The whole family going to collect a puppy increases risks.

I don't make the rules and I'm avoiding public places and shops in general. But yeah there is no guidance on reducing the risks. Should do one big shop for say 2 weeks of food that takes an hour, but I've been going every 2-3 days for a quick in and out. Which one is better for public health?

So OP if you do go to collect the puppy, have a list of things you've done to reduce the risk, so if a cop pulls you over, you can at least suggest to him, you've thought about it and taken these precautions.
I mean a delivery company has to also collect the puppy and deliver to you, so thats adding an extra person in the middle.

Anyway I'm supportive of what we need to do, I just don't think the governments are great at explaining things and I think that is because they know anything too complicated loses the publics attention.

    • I agree. A lot of people on here will have a go with me and that's fine

But these same people will go to Coles 4 times a week, Bunnings maybe twice and why not go to Queen Victoria Market which is packed. Probably see 50 people easily. I would see one petrol station and the breeder maybe 2-3 people for the entire 8 hour round trip

Yes have a go at me for doing something mildly selfish so I can get a dog I paid for 8 weeks ago but its fine to go shopping and go about your business.

Fot everyones info I have stayed home the entire weekend with my mates going costco etc.
We will probably get a transport company to get the dog but look at yourself before you get so upset about someone here who genuinely wants to ask a question.

  • Do you have the red card system down there? To travel to Qld from other states, you have to apply for permission (red card). It would doing answer your question.

    • no nothing b/w victoria and nsw

    • no nothing b/w victoria and nsw

The curve is flat. It is time to open our borders and businesses so we can start making money again.

  • What part of stay at home do people not understand?? Lives are at risk. Accidents happen requiring front line workers to be put at risk, vehicles can break down putting others at risk, the people you come into contact with on a 5 hour trip are also at risk. YOU are at risk. NOW multiply all of the combinations of the people that could be affected by one selfish act and there could be thousands of infections an also deaths. So STAY AT HOME. This is not a personal attack btw. I read so many comments supporting this venture and I had a melt down. Feeling better now I have vented. Maybe this might help others stay home and help somehow.

    • There are fewer vehicles and pedestrians using the roads now which means a reduced risk of vehicle and vehicle/pedestrian collisions. It is safer to use the roads today than at the start of the 2020.
      https://roadsafety.transport.nsw.gov.au/statistics/interacti…

      • False equivalence of the nature of risks start of 2020 vs present. Ignores remaining non-negligible risk of virus spread at present.

    • Thanks. I understand and agree with you regarding staying home.

But if you are upset at this be upset with the various people at markets.
The people going to bunnings for home improvement

Yes shopping for food is essential. Shopping 5 times a week isn't
Nor is buying jeans, jigsaws or any other matter.

Getting a dog is as essential as any of the above

      • I am. If the Government gave consistent information and direction none of this would be happening. Have you seen the lack of social distancing in these places. The media is full of them. If we want to get out of this cabin fever situation we ALL have to do our bit COLLECTIVELY. If it’s not essential stay home. People will all pull their weight if they know we are all doing the same thing. Otherwise it’s often a matter of, well if they can break the rules then I can too - which is just ridiculous. If I saw other people shoplifting I wouldn’t do it so what’s the difference?

  • It's a gamble but seems like a reason that could be argued to be valid.

Since the police didn't say no outright I would probably try but it depends on how good your negotiating skills are in the unlikely event that you are pulled over.

    • +2

      We've decided not to.
      Too many police with inconsistencies

a guy got fined washing his car at 2am in the morning
or sitting in your car having a bite

      • -2

THANK YOU! You can get your pup by other means and you will feel good about it. Remember to shampoo it because the virus can spread on their fur. So don’t let strangers pet your pup when you take it out. I’m very very glad you are doing the right thing.

  • So…what did you do?

I am in the same boat in vic and very similar journey needed. We have a puppy to collect, its important that you adopt it at the right time. But i get the risk and the 'life worth collecting a puppy' argument.

What did you do, what do you think the low risk options are? I don't want to put 8 week old puppy in transport crate unless it's a personal delivery via a direct route.

    Any suggestions?

  • Hi, can i know what did you end up doing as i'm in a similar situation, Need to pick up a puppy from Bendigo?!
