Which of These TVs Do You Recommend? (Samsung v Sony v LG)

I am trying to find out which of these will be a better TV and give most bang for the buck. Its going to be used as a main TV and will be in a room with ample natural light. Will be used to watch netflix, prime and free to air TV. There may be a possibility 2 years down the line I may have a kid come play some video games on the TV. I have finalised these from my needs of a 65" TV below $1500 :

https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/samsung-series-8-ru8000-6… (samsung UA65RU8000WXXY) $1395
https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/sony-x8000g-65-4k-uhd-and… (Sony KD65X8000G) $1295
This one's coming up as a close contender : https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/lg-65-inches-um7400-4k-uhd-sm… $995

I have only used Sony in the past so am leaning slightly over to Sony. However the Samsung's specs are impressive. One of the pros of Samsung is that its got 200 Hz refresh rate. However, I am hesitant to go with Samsung given that its menu gets advertisements which seem nearly impossible to get rid of without effecting other apps. I am unaware if this is the case with all android TVs. No idea about LG at all - but this model doesn't look like is OLED.

So, after pulling me hair out and over analysing am turning it over to the ozb mind. What do yous recommend?

Like, a random kid is likely to just wander into your house or you have a "plan"?

    • No. A 7 year old may come live in my house for periods of time.

Rookie. Get an LG C9 for $1385

The 8000G Sonys have a very weak android platform which I believe can't be upgraded to 9.0. And I believe the Sonys sometimes get ads too.

The Samsung is not Android if that matters to you.

    • Thank you for replying. I didn't know Sony got ads too !
What benefit does android offer anyway? I have googled and it says I can get access to apps. Wouldn't apps like netflix/stan/prime come with the TV ? They did with my old Sony. If not, a chromecast or some sort of TV box would do the trick ? I am really trying to understand, in laymans terms, what benefits an android TV offers.

In theory more apps and tighter Google integration if that is your thing. But I'm in the market for a TV too and I've discounted the X8000G family as the Android version supported is already out of date and the platform can't be upgraded.

Go the Samsung, the LG is fine too but the UM74 family competes with the RU7100 Samsungs - in other words, the Samsung you are looking at is superior to the LG. But you can see that in the price anyway.

And yes, LG and Samsung have good app support on their TVs.

        • Righto. Thanks for the insight on Sony. It was the prime contender from my pov. The only concern with Samsung was with the ads. It looks like ads are going to be a nuisance with any android tv.

One of the pros of Samsung is that its got 200 Hz refresh rate.

This is most likely an unnecessary feature for you, unless you want to play FPS competitively on TV

    • Thank you for replying. I had no idea about this. I would be hesitant to let a 7 year old play FPS games, I think.
So samsung is out then. What do you recommend mate ?

Out of the 3, I'd go with sony for their color accuracy.

Hey mate, see the below from a company that does this day in day out and even has the calibration settings when you get it home.

I've even ordered them for you :)

Much better answer than asking a bunch of randoms on a bargain website. Have a great day!

I disagree. This sites user base is probably the most informed to give an opinion on what will get the best bang for my buck. As far as how your comment actually helps, I looked at that site. The site doesn't have the specifics for LG UM7400 and Sony x8000g. 7300 is not quite 7400 and x800 is not quite x8000. Unless they are.

I bought a samsung in august last year. Not the model you want. After a few updates, it started showing more ads. Do you research and make sure you buy a TV that doesnt have a history of this.
I use the TV as a monitor (120hz) and dont plug it in for network anymore. The 120hz IMO is only really valuable if you are doing a lot of gaming at 120hz. So far I've used it for around 10% of the time. I do prefer playing 1080p at 120hz rather than 4k at 50-60hz. You wont need it for anything else (as already mentioned above).

Had a Sammy for 5 years at least now. Every update makes it worse than the last.

If you buy a smart tv, best to keep it dumb, and disconnected from any uplink. Use a multimedia box instead. Esp. if it has sensors, mics and cameras. They can't be trusted not to start monetising your preferences, private information and even collecting biometric data- whether it be a hack or the factory software. Plus constant annoyances when their lawyers tell them they need to update the Ts&Cs or online offerings. It's just more trouble than its worth dealing with these vendors. If you can set things up such that you use an external HD tuner and external video source switching, you'll be able to relegate the remote to a drawer too, as it can auto-on/off through the HDMI input- and you can use your amplifier's universal remote. That way you're really golden!

  • Good price for the Samsung at the moment.

Was a bit of a ride. Reserved the LG from my choices with TGG. Organised transport and when I rocked up to the store and they couldn't have bothered with the reservation and had sold the TV. Offered me a discount on other models that I wasn't interested in. I picked up the last of the floor stock of the Samsung from my list for $1250. Was on the floor for about 2 months - nothing in the grand scheme of the life of the TV.

Whatever you end up doing, most stores will offer a better price than advertised if you simply ask for it. Even if its $50 - its $50 bucks! Only Jb hifi was acting pricy and said wouldn't give the better price on a phone as its against some policy of theirs.
