20,000+ eBooks to Download/Read @ City of Sydney & State Libraries

290

City of Sydney's public libraries are some of the many venues temporarily closed in a bid to contain COVID-19. That doesn't mean that you can't spend your time at home reading as many books as possible, however, with Sydneysiders able access the libraries' hefty collection of digital items — not only including books, but music, magazines and movies as well.

As part of that collection, more than 11,000 ebooks are on offer. You'll find contemporary fiction titles such as Murakami's Norwegian Wood and True Grit by Charles Portis; a bunch of Australian ones, including Christos Tsiolkas's The Slap, Tim Winton's Cloudstreet, Benjamin Law's memoir The Family Law and The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion's; and over 200 classics such as The Great Gatsby, Heart of Darkness, On the Road and To Kill a Mockingbird — all of which are available to read online or download for a limited period for free. The list goes on, of course, and to start digitally skimming through their pages, all you need to do is sign up for a free digital library membership on the City of Sydney Library website, or use your existing library membership and head here.

Not enough? City of Sydney Library has recently added the State Library of NSW's online resource Indyreads, too, which will give you access to more than 9000 ebooks from major and independent publishers, self-published authors and local writers. Once you've got your library membership sorted, you can log into Indyreads.

  • It's one of the worst eLibrary collections I've come across. There's 84 books listed in the Contents under "Junior Easy", but when you click on it, only 2 books turn up. Other sections have a similar issue. Perhaps the eBooks operate under a loan system too. Who knows…

Other local library seem to be using the borrow box app seem to have a better collection.

    • Could you elaborate on this a bit please? I just ordered a Kobo Clara HD which has overdrive and I'm keen to link it to a library with the best possible selection of kids/young adult books. Any recommendations where to go/sign up?

      • When I say other local libraries - I'm just going by what my friends have said. They're pretty happy with their local library's eBook collection. I'm pretty unhappy with Sydney City Library's eBook collection.

        • Is City of Sydney's eBook collection the same for all its 9 branches? Or does Town Hall differ from eg Ultimo?

            Same across all branches.

        • A librarian told me a couple of years ago that the publishers had forced them to buy bundles of ebooks which contained only a few good titles and a lot of junk and that even these were hideously expensive.

If I was making the decision for Sydney City Library and it was take-it-or-leave-it, I would've 'left-it'. It's a horrible collection.

Would've been better off subsidizing kindle unlimited memberships for library members.
