How Much to Invest in a Good Soldering Iron Kit during This Pandemic?

Hi I wish to try my hand at soldering some stuff. Got the idea because I wrecked my NDS Lite tip screen while replacing the cracked shell.

I used to see top posts on the front page about soldering irons but now I don’t see them no more.

I did a search on OzB and found Goot is a popular and on YouTube it’s hakko

What a good set and what’s an ideal price range for a first timer like me?

Thank u

  • https://au.rs-online.com/web/p/soldering-irons/5175812/ hakko 60W soldering iron for <$30

Otherwise a TS100 for $60-70 OZB search. However, you will need a laptop power supply. See page 7

    • Cheers looks of good advice on there. Thank u will have a look

  • +1

Depends on what you want to solder.

Circuit boards need a different iron to heavier wiring soldering.

I use one like this https://www.jaycar.com.au/duratech-48w-temperature-controlle… for light work and a Butane iron for heavier work.

I also have a heavy duty iron for soldering things like guttering.

    • Cheers will have a look! I am planning just to repair like circuit boards mainly like broken NDS consoles

  • Really depends how much you intend to use it in the future. If its just for one job, then you can get ones from Jaycar or Bunnings that are $15 that will work as long as you pay attention to their limitations.

If it's for something a bit more than that, these seem half decent: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/174155442147
That's what I would get. They skip some of the frustrations of the cheaper tools, while not being so fantastic as to command a high price.

    • Oh wow That’s cheap, will research more thank u

      • That's the one you want.

It's a knock-off of the discontinued Hakko 936, look on eBay for the sets of tips as well.

Spare parts are cheap, buy a spare handle because why not?

Good enough for most hobby-type work. If you get into replacing SMD ICs you'll eventually like to have the $60 858D hot air station as well.

      • Nice iron but don't buy it from that seller if you do decide to buy that model.

They have shocking feedback 96.2%. Definitely a seller to keep well away from.

        • don't buy it from that seller

The seller is in China, so you might not receive it any time soon.

    • the only thing about the bunnings one is the tips are huge.

  • As someone who has held IPC certification for a while, I wouldn't get anything without temperature control and interchangeable (widely available) tips.
No, a dial on the side does not necessarily mean temp control, the cheap ones will be POWER control only, and there's a massive practical difference.
Don't need to fork out more than $50, but certainly something with a base station will almost always be temperature controlled, and IMO, essential for creating anything other than an uncle's dodgy sub-automotive-grade mess.
