Free Immobiliser - Hume City Council (VIC)

300

I respect that this will be very few of the OzBargain community, but I figured this might be a good offer for at least some of you!

To help reduce the number of cars stolen in Hume, Victoria Police, together with Council, is hosting Operation Bounce Back, on Wednesday 14 September.

Operation Bounce Back is offering vouchers for free engine immobilisers and tips on preventing car theft. Anyone can come along to find out ways to help protect their vehicles from theft, such as taking mobile GPS devices off the windscreen and removing any valuables from a car, each time you leave your vehicle unattended.

Operation Bounce Back is on from 7am – 9am, in a Police and Council stall outside the Broadmeadows Railway Station on 14 September.

A limited number of free vehicle immobiliser vouchers will be given out to the owners of cars made before 1992 who come along, to help prevent vehicle theft.

“We are looking to reduce the number of older cars stolen in Hume, as a lot of the cars that are stolen in Hume are older vehicles,” Broadmeadows Leading Senior Constable Leigh Harris said.

To be eligible for a free immobiliser, drivers must live in Hume, drive a car made in 1992 or earlier and provide their licence and car registration as proof of ownership."

Be worth going just for the free car show of lowered fordodores with bubbles in the window tint that turn up for a free immobiliser

I like that you have to provide proof of ownership - just in case you are trying to keep your stolen car safe from theft!

  • +15

The Free Immobiliser might be worth more than the cars made in 1992 or earlier!

  • +7

A 19 year old car is in itself a deterrent to theft.

    • +6

actually I think older cars are a lot more prone to theft.

      • +1

citybarginhunter: You are right of course. For some bizarre reason people think most thefts are late model.

  • +6

So… bottom line… DON'T PARK IN HUME!! (unless you want your car stolen)

  • +9

If I owned a car made in 1992 or earlier, it might be better without an Immobiliser, so that someone could steal it and I get the insurance payout instead.

    • +5

The excess would likely be higher than the car's value.

      • Only on market value, not agreed value ;-)

  • +2

Ya know, this could be one giant elaborate scam to steal a bunch of cars… At least they know the cars parked around the event will be easy targets! :P

This isn't the Sopranos where they steal a bunch of parked Mercs at a wedding!

    1) Bring in old cars
    2) Defect cars and fine owners
    3) Profit!

    • that crossed my mind, but it appears that you just bring license + rego and they give you a voucher to get an immobiliser installed by a 3rd party.

  • nice

More likely is the Police using this as a great way to bust unregistered cars/ unlicensed drivers.. especially given the area it's in!

    • Last time I took up the offer, they didn't even check the car - they confirmed we lived in Hume and that we owned a pre-1993 vehicle and handed over the voucher.

  • +7

dear residents, please watch out your next council rate notices and spot the hike

    • +1

      DAMN IT!

    • As far as I am aware, the council itself isn't funding it.

  • lol how long have immobilizers been mandatory in cars now - 12+ years? Who would have a car without one?

    • They're not mandatory as far as I was aware.

Also note - this offer is for cars Pre-1993. AKA, around 15+ years.

      • Engine immobilizers have been mandatory in cars in Australia since around 98-99. Any car made after that will have one.

        • +1

Yep Wikipedia says since 2001. So if you're cars made between 1992 and 2001. You're screwed.

        • No, 2001 was the date when they were made mandatory. Plenty of cars had them before then.

"Operation Bounce Back is on from 7am – 9am, in a Police and Council stall outside the Broadmeadows Railway Station"

Surprising it on so eary in the day as I would guess most "locals" would be still in bed with a "hangover".

Also find it quite humourous that the "Broady railway station" is the focal point for attendance…… just so all the crims can check out the vunerable cars without immobilisers.

  • +3

Cars earlier than 1992 will probably be classified as not roadworthy by the police when you bring your car in for the free immobiliser. Instead of being stolen by thief, it will be confiscated by the police. LOL

  • +2

i can't imagine a car thief going for this free immobiliser at 8am after having stolen a car at 7.
(hey car thieves could be ozbargainers too, they think discounts & freebies are a steal!)

    • +3

      the irony

  • +2

do you have to get out of your car at broady station?
will it be there when you get back?

  • +1

damn not good, now the theives will be able to get free immobilizers and figure out how to hack them!

  • My council (also is SE melb) were giving out these vouchers as well.

They didn't limit it to pre 92 as my car is a 94. Got myself a free immobiliser.

While a 2001 and newer car would be nice, finding one that will fit 4 kids isn't easy. Not going to touch a Kia carnivale. Taragos are stupidly expensive 2nd hand. Solution? 1994 delica super exceed. http://i.imgur.com/dddEi.jpg 7 seat turbo diesel, 5 sun roofs, 4x4.

Not all cars pre 2000 are crap.
