How to Monetise David Jones Cards - Products to Buy & Resell??

Hi All

I have a bunch of David Jones cards from a frequent flyer redemption, and it'd be really beneficial for my family situation to have cash right now, so I am thinking the best thing to do is buy something from the store that I can onsell on gumtree/etc. I have tried selling the cards on gumtree/forums/etc but either the buyers are scammers or the discount they want is huge (25%+).

I have been looking through the catalogue and I think the best "onsellable" product is probably a Macbook Air….. but before I go ahead and buy one I thought I'd check in with you all and see if you have any suggestions. Any advice is appreciated, thanks!

I wouldn't buy a second hand computer of any type and expect to pay just 25% less than retail.

Sell the gift cards for the discounted price offered and take the hit. Remember people buying those gift cards are taking a risk that they may not be honoured in the future.

Anything in the creator expert category.

Assembly square, mustang, all have a good resale value. They are on sale right now right?

        • Bad advice, unless you become lucky one year down the track when that kit become sort of rarity.

          • @lgacb08: You mean, especially if they become retired. Catch Creator expert on sale, sell it for a small percentage off RRP. If it becomes retired, u can sell it with a much higher markup.

Have you seen the prices of the brick bank? A set that retired this year?

    Macbook is a good idea
Did this myself last year, sold it for about 7% off RRP
Buyers will want tax Invoice and it to be in a sealed box.

Note that Apple products attract the scummiest of the scums. Pros and cons as usual.

  • DJ gift cards used to be able to be bought at 10pc discounts all year round. So anyone that wants to buy it from a personal seller like yourself would have their expectation anchored at a discount of more than 10pc. Alot of people on OZB would have access to salary sacrifice via work so they can buy laptops/phones at a large discount already. Depends where you are attempting to sell it. :)

Your Apple product idea is good.

I had success once with an iPad purchased with Myer giftcards then on selling it on ebay and I got my purchase price back.

As the buyer may not have been able to access a store, buyer may have deemed ebay to be as safe as purchasing from a store.
    And protected by Paypal.

  • why dont you just put them up here for sale with a 5-10% discount?

  • If people are redeeming frequent flyer points at this point in time, aren't coles or wish gift cards the next best thing to cash (instead of DJs gift cards etc.)? Groceries and fuel are essential purchases for most people

If you're stuck with DJs gift cards probably best to purchase an iPad or Macbook as resale is generally good, but expect to still take a significant hit

Velocity store only had DJ's vouchers when i redeemed my points almost 2 weeks ago.

Wanted Bunnings, then coles but they all went too fast

Damn, people were onto this early. Makes sense as even if the airlines do survive, they will most likely reduce the redemption value of the points people have stockpiled

  • Why don't u just list a bunch of popular product for sale first without buying them . When u find a buyer then go into DJs and buy the actual product (then cancel the rest of the ads)

    • Risky; what if DJs sells out of the product e.g. iPad

Right now things that entertain people inside is selling well due to isolation, So video Games and consoles, and ipads.

  • Why would someone who is only willing to take gift cards at a 25% discount, suddenly be willing to buy some random good from you at less of a discount??? Doesn't make sense!

You will be far better off attempting to sell the gift cards with less of a discount than any other alternative. At least the gift cards won't lose value while they continue to remain valid.

for anyone that is wondering……. ended up buying a macbook air for $1517 and sold on GT for $1450….. so 4.5% discount.

sold the rest of the cards on ozb/GT at 15% off.
