Food shrinking!!!

So I had a Big Mac last week. First one in a few years… and SERIOUSLY the first thing I noticed when I opened the box was the size of the big mac. the bun is so f*cking small… and the patties are close to being paper thin… seriously they were so thin in some areas that I there were holes.

I remember these burgers being huge muthas which I had to hold with both hands.

On Tuesday I picked up a pizza from Dominos and when I opened the box…… HOLY SH*T no lie the pizza shrunk!! Seriously each slice was so thin and small, and the "thick pan base" wasn't as thick and fluffy as I remembered.

Yesterday I had a bowl of pho in Sunnybank and noticed there was less meat, tripe, tendons and meatballs in bowl :(
Gf had a plate of com tam and the piece of meat was so f*cking tiny it was disrespectful and rude

Just a few minutes ago I had a Mrs Macs pie and that thing looked tiny too.

WTF?!?!

p.s. Ikea 50c ice cream cones have shrunk too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

p.p.s. and the retarded thing is that the prices continue to increase whilst the quantity decreases.

p.p.s I remember when a kfc 2 piece feed was $4.25 and now it's $9 wtfbbq!!

Mod: Edited title.

The size of pizzas is the one that amazes me. They will totally disappear in another year at this rate.
I dont buy them any more, the cardboard box gives me wind! … burp.

not an insult, but where's sunnybank ? eat pho at flemington or cabramatta and you will get real value. ok i know i could google it too but…yeah.

the only proof i have of big macs shrinking is visually…since it used to take me 2-3 as a kid to fill me up. yes i liked to eat. the worst is fillet-o-fishes actually. that thing…could fit in my nostril. its PATHETIC !!!! yet it is one of my fave items on the menu, but i will rarely EVER (once a year?) buy it because it just does NOT justify the cost.

i also remember when zinger meals cost 6 or 7$ … that was acceptable. but now ??? no.

    • i also remember when zinger meals cost 6 or 7$ … that was acceptable. but now ??? no.

Streetwise zinger combo — $5.95 and it's still on the menu. The size of the fillet though, that's another thing.

      • It isn't a Zinger Burger, it's some new creation created by KFC which includes some sort of mild sauce, two crispy strips and bun. I would go for the Streetwise Chicken Combo rather than the Streetwise Burger Combo.

      • haha it's the son of the zinger….but not the zinger himself ! anyway doesn't matter cos i haven't bought KFC for well over half a year.

        • KFC ain't really affordable to be enjoyed now. It's more of a rare treat for me because I seriously cannot justify playing $8+ dollars for a meal there.

      sunnybank is brisbane…

    1. Inflation

    2. By many reports, the big mac hasn't shrunk. It's always been 1/10th pound patties.
Although, to be honest, I don't really remember, so maybe!

  • The food is shrinking.. at least for McDonald.. I did remember that it was bigger size like the Hungry Jack's double whopper size… but yes that is part of the cost cutting measure… there was an article written not long ago.. since the companies realize that there is only so much they can increase the price they have decided to reduce the portion they give to the customer.. i.e… can you imagine paying a McDonald big mac for $14 alone??? of course not (Although for other burger joint I know that is how much they charge)

i.e. paper toilet roll.. one roll is about 50 cent.. but the decide to make the inside roll holder the diameter wider.. so it looks the same size but less toilet paper… I have seen that happen too.. seems to me paper toilet roll is cheaper than 50 cent now like average 35 cent per roll.. since the Aust court has decided that coles and woolworth can start import cheap toilet paper from Indonesia again.. so.. competition is always good…

Anyway I digress since this top is about food..

Shrinking products may be abetter top ionn??
The companies are that focused on competitors products they loose sight of the target, the customer.
Non franchise burgers around here are slightly dearer but you get a "burger", not tons of packaging. When I want a burger that is where I go, may have to wait 10min for it but it is worth it.

      • Well said. McDonalds producing all those boxes looks like a massive waste to me. Would rather have it wrapped in paper and the savings passed on. Although having said that, I don't eat McDonalds much. Much prefer going local.

        • do you live in sydney ? if so, what suggestions for local ?

It's a bit like chips that you buy from Coles/Woolies. Specials are usually 2 for $4, but the bags have gone from 200g to 175g. Argument from the food companies is better portion control… whatever

It's not just food either. We received a box of Huggies baby wipes as a baby shower gift and a few months later bought the 'same' thing - the quantity of wipes was the same, but they'd shrunk by about 1cm on each side!

Seems to be the latest trend, I think there's a marketing terms for it somewhere - just noticeable difference? And until the wider market starts complaining about it, these companies will continue to get away with this 'trick' =[

    • Pretty sure they were 250g before that as well.

      • I believe the Doritos started off at 230g.

Most items at the supermarket are shrinking as well as increasing their prices
    e.g
    Confectionery(Chocolate Bars)
    Chips
    Frozen Food
    As someone mentioned somewhere eggs

    etc

With Big Macs etc. Don't forget when you were smaller and had them, your hands were smaller, etc. Big Macs were never the size of Whoppers.

However pizzas have shrunk. We need a food historian taking longitudinal photos as proof.

Anyone want to do it now to have a record for the next decade?

    • Major chain pizzas wont make it to the next decade.. LOL They will shrink that much they will disappear. :-)
I can see the ads now… "Pizza Box" (pizza extra)..,
Used to like a dcent pizza but have just stopped buying them, it is a waste of time.
I wonder if one of the major chains will step outside the box (sorry for the pun) and offer a pizza like the used to make them? I would pay more for it.
The magic ingredient with all food items… quality and quantity.

and pizzas never have that thing in the middle now, that white triangular plastic thingo
      i feel ripped off

Sure food is shrinking but I think we are all expanding too. :(

    • Truth hurts!! :-) :-)

I'm amazed at how small burgers, Doritos and pizzas are getting as well. It would be good if stores had to declare when items have shrunk. Heck, they do it when "prices are down". Maybe "prices are down" because items have shrunk?

I thought the reason would be more like this, "It's just the retail and food industry responding to consumer pressure for portion size reduction." Ie. BS

  • I wouldn't have noticed small boxes of Sultana Bran had shrunk from 500g to 420g, but for the fact that the old size box shows up as a 'discontinued' item in one of my old Coles Online shopping lists. Or that the small box of Uncle Tobys Plus Fibre was reduced in size from 460g to 430g.

However, I went through a couple of supermarket receipts from a few years ago expecting to find more examples, and couldn't find a single one. Which suggests as a proportion of all products on offer, the tactic isn't as common as one might have come to think from their personal experience and sharing of anecdotes, or that the process is slower (might check some 2004 receipts later :D).

As an aside I dimly recall being an adolescent and thinking $2.25 for a Big Mac was just exorbitant.

That explains why things go up in price and sizes getting smaller too.

I read that in Australia the BigMacs are 10% smaller than the rest of the world, I read a economist complaining about it.

    http://www.news.com.au/big-mac-not-really-as-australian-vers…

"CALL it the Not So Big Mac. The Daily Telegraph can today reveal the Australian version of the McDonald's signature product is actually more than 20 per cent smaller than its namesake in other nations."

    • "We can also debunk the popular myth that our burger has shrunk. It's always been Not So Big. Peter Ritchie - who brought McDonald's to Australia - - said it's size had not been reduced. Size has never changed."

thats like watching someone steal and then asking if they did it ?!?!?!??!

      ahhaha

  • I like the way you write OP

  • In general, just about the size of every food has gotten smaller but still at the same price. Whatever the reason, inflation will grow at a ever increasing rate.

    • +1

Wow, you realise that you've used the 3rd derivative of price. :)

    • I'd still like to see some evidence for view that 'just about the size of every food' has shrunk. Otherwise it seems a bit like the "price rise" aspect of the debate where there's a big gap between the objective measures and the Average Joe's impression of their spending.

  • Dominos pizzas have definitely shrunk.
When I was at Eagle boys about 10 years ago we went from 14 inch to 12 inch and we dropped the size of the box as well.
there was incredible savings with food and packaging and people started ordering more as well.

I ate Dominos the other day and I use to struggle to eat a large, now i could eat a large and a 1/2
