Looking for Cheapest Low-Usage Internet Plan

Hi, I am helping a family member get internet for the first time (that's a thing in 2020?).

I was wondering what would be the cheapest option. She does't need high speed and I don't think she would need much data.

She is an NBN-ready address; the cheapest NBN plan I could find was TPG NBN12 10GB for $29.95/month.

I was thinking, instead could she not get a Boost pre-paid 120GB data pack for $150. No contracts, no setup fees. Assuming she has good 4G coverage in her suburb, she would just need to get an unlocked (or Telstra branded?) pocket wifi, right? Any suggestions?

Any other options, or anything I am missing here?

Thanks

This 100%, no better value plans out there right now if you're not a power user, I've got 3 of them so far.

For an extra $5 a month you can get a Telstra hotspot, not the greatest value as it works out to $120, but an easy lazy option.

There is a deal for Boost that's ending next week https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/519409

120GB of Data for $150 (normally 80GB). 1 year expiry.

  • Thanks phunky and scrimshaw.

I was looking at the Boost plan. It seems great value. I also like the unlimited (shaped) download of the Telstra plan.

Any suggestions on wifi modem/dongle? I assume a Boost SIM would work in a Telstra modem.

i use over 50gb a month on that telstra $15 plan

i got mine for $2 from gumtree , some very old telstra branded netgear usb 4g dongle
or you can look for used telstra pocket wifi if you need to use on multiple devices
else you can get wifi modem that supports usb dongle, make sure you get the compatible dongle advertised by the modem
(get some alcohol wipes if you're getting one used)

won't work on phone hotspot as it bans phone imei no.

This thread has quite a few suggestions

She doesn't need a big plan now… but I guarantee when she discovers the Internet and all the available cat video content, she's going to need more.

hey OP - just saw this today on OZB - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/526864

    • Went with Telstra mobile broadband and using an old Android phone as hotspot.

Almost impossible to find a 4G modem amid the working from home rush. Local Telstra store and officeworks both sold out.

      Thanks for your help everyone.
