Budget Fridge for Single Person?

I'm moving out of home for the first time in a month and need to shop around for appliances, of which I'm pretty clueless about. Trying to keep costs low since money might get a bit tigt with Covid and all.

I was eyeing this fridge which seemed like a decent deal at $500 with high capacity and energy efficiency but it's been sold out.

My only requirements are:
* No mini fridges, since I do cook a lot and may need to sublet a room out in the future
* Balance between budget friendly and energy efficient
* No need for fancy features

Cheapest fridges I can find seem to be all from Kogan. Is it worth the risk to go with a budget brand, or is it better to go for a reputable brand (LG, Samsung) for safety in the long run?

Cheers

I would go with something more local. I have a factory seconds F&P that's been faultless for 13 years now but also have friends with Samsung and LG that have been long lasting.

    Ebay or gumtree

We purchased a "scratched and dented" fridge from the local Harvey Norman seconds outlet - the scratch was on the back of the fridge - otherwise it works perfectly. Ours is a big fridge freezer unit and it was at least $500 below the retail cost, including delivery.

I know Harvey Norman doesn't get good press here - but in this instance I would definitely recommend you look at their seconds outlets if there is one that is easily accessible to you.

  • Use the max. measurements based on the available space at your new place as your guide when you research which fridge models to consider.

Have a list of at least 3 models & monitor prices in the time you have before you move in.

Just a warning that Kogan don't appear to have a good reputation for when things go wrong with their products.

  • If you're moving out for the first time, get the cheapest second hand fridge you can find that's not damaged or pre 2000. I got mine for $50

Then buy a better one in a few months after prices have settled down. Right now everyone's going nuts

Brands are all the same at the low end.

  • I bought a Chiq CTM320W from Good Guys when I moved into my place (320L) - I've had it for about 7 months now and it's been great.
I only paid $347, it was a huge deal at the time.

Apparently the Chiq brand is a branch off Changhong which is a huge Chinese electronics company. Normally I would try and steer clear of this.
    BUT

It comes with an extended 5 year warranty (extra 2 years on the standard 3 years warranty) - see: https://chiq.com.au/warranty-promotion/

So, I thought $347 for a fridge I know will work for 5 years at least is a pretty good investment.
It isn't that cheap at the moment, I can see it for $488 at JB but you may be able to shop around.

It is a good size, has all the features you'd want and has impressive warranty. I've recommended it to friends who have purchased it and liked it as well.

    Hope this helps!
