Which NBN Provider, Gold Coast + Connection questions.

Hi All,
1. ISP provider
My ADSL connection is about to be disconnected. I'm currently with exetel and their ADSL2+ connection was reasonable (I was able to stream netflix, youtube, iview and SBS on Demand). Are there any recommendations for a provider? I've checked the whistleout website and cross referenced ISPs with product review; however, i'm having difficulty choosing an ISP/RSP (i think ISP has changed to RSP)

2. Wall socket
I don't have an NBN wall socket… NBN attached a box to the external wall of my house. Ideally, i'd like the wall socket to be in the living room (say next to the tv aerial wall plug). Has anyone had experience with getting a wall socket installed, if so, are you allowed to request the location of the internal wall socket? I have a single level home, concrete tile roof, plaster internal walls.

3. Do you need a modem?
N00b question, do you need a modem/router for the NBN (similar to ADSL) or will a router on its on suffice? My brother gave me a Netcomm N300 wifi gigabit router. Would this suffice for BYO hardware plans, or would i need to buy a modem? I suspect i might have a HFC connection… (There was some reference to HFC… is HCF good?)

Thanks,

    1. I'm with TPG 100/40 unlimited. Love it

    2. If your request is reasonable and do-able they often oblige. If you want something difficult you will have to pay extra to get it done.

    3. router. your ISP will often give you one for free when you sign up. I'm on HFC, get near maximum speeds up and down.

Where your own router could have issues is with a landline phone. Not all ISPs give out the SIP information freely. TPG does not for example. I don't use a landline phone so I don't care.

    • oh thanks! we don't have a landline, so hopefully that makes things a little less complicated.

  • I use Aussie Broadband on NBN. They have their own network infrastructure (not a 3rd party reseller) and support staff in Victoria.

RSP is the new term for ISP that NBN use but it doesn't matter.

Does the NBN address checker say your going to get HFC?

    • Thanks.
just checked NBN address checker, yep, it said HFC. There's some good info on that site too. I don't think the previous owner had foxtel as there is only one tv aerial socket near the tv (and no additional coaxial sockets). It seems like HFC uses a coaxial cable, which should be easy to install/connect, i think they're just copper (i.e., not optical fibre). It seems routers don't have a coaxial input, so maybe there's a cable that has coaxial on one side and ethernet on the other side (in order to connect the router to the wall)… or there's a unit which takes coaxial in and ethernet out.

Yeah HFC does use coax. Routers don't have coax. When NBN come to do your install they provide you with a cable modem that has a coax connection and ethernet connection. The coax cable goes from the cable modem to the wall socket and ethernet cable from the cable modem to your router.

Your bros Netcomm N300 router does work with HFC. It's limited to 2.4Ghz wireless speed. If your not happy with the wireless performance upgrade to a newer router.

          Thanks!
