This is awesome price. Was kinda regretting I bought D850 last christmas sale in digidirect. Haha!

    • the 850 has better better AF and that is a bid deal for me.

      • +1

After they updated the firmware to 3.0, the AF is kinda good actually. I have Z6 and D850. I like Z6 in a way that there is EVF, but colours and render in D850 is really the real deal…

Oh, and what I like with Z6 is the auto WB is better than My D850 if I use vintage manual lenses.

        • I absolutely needed to hear an independent opinion on nikon mirrorless vs specifically an d850 alternative.
You've come up with the goods mate and I'm really grateful.

Currently I'm shooting all my action on a D4, it's older but the responsiveness and AF have been super solid.
I am retiring my D800 i need for studio and will replace it with the Z7, I look forward to not needing to make microadjustments when using this model.

@spinferno: Oh yeah, that’s the plus side!!! No AF fine tuning!!!!

However, the biggest downside for me is single card slot coz I do events and I need backup.

Been looking at this myself for a while but unfortunately now is not the time for me to spend on a new camera!

Am guessing a lot of people think this way atm hence the discounts to entice buyers.

  • Wow good price. Any suggestion compared to the sony system? The A7iii at $2000 is also attractive.

    • Way better than A7iii. vs A7Riii, that’s a debatable question between Sony and Nikon fans. LOL.

    • I only read about Nikon, but the main thing I heard is that the Sony menu system is awful, Sony ergonomics are questionable, but their AF is better.

You'll also need to consider the lens side of things, and I think Nikon are probably better quality but less choice.

      • Definitely more affordable lens selection for Sony from third party lens manufacturers

        • Fair enough. 90% of the Nikon Z lenses are top notch though. Not sure about the Sony ones but I heard the kit lens (24-70 mm f/4) on Sony is nowhere near as good.

          • @lukethefish: Absolutely correct, I think currently Nikon S 24-70 f/4 is best in the market for it's compact size & image quality. Recently Tamron released really good lenses for Sony E mount for very reasonable prices. Hopefully they'll do the same for Z mount soon.

      • I owned a Nikon D750 for about 4 years, and switched to Sony a7 iii for about a year now.

Colour and white balance is definitely better on Nikon in the terms of default output, with less raw post processing.

Sony has a very tedious menu system, but also gives you the flexibility to customise it in the way you want it. It just takes a while to get used to but after that it's intuitive.

Dynamic range is about the same as Nikon.

The area I think Sony has the advantage is quick and accurate autofocusing.. for now

    • If you have not yet invested in any brand lenses, the Nikon would be later technology and this is their flagship with all the features in their arsenal. I'd suggest go for the Body and 24-70 mm f/4 lens $3,999.20, that should cover most of your shootings and keep cost down. I'd agree that while Sony is great with the sensor technology, their user interface is well behind the others like Panasonic and Canon. The Sony touch screen has limited capabilities compared to the other brands, the menus are not intuitive…

    • Thanks all guys, get a new Z7 kit.

      • I am envious, although I already have a FF with 24-70mm F2.8 lens (different brand) :-)

        • Oh man, how should I express my envy :(

  • I bought z6+xqd + Ftz for $2445 at jbhifi just 3 weeks back

How are you feeling right now?

pour fuel on the flame lol

I want a company coz I bought D850 in December. I’m rolling in my bed when I saw the promotion. LOL

          • @jerome38: 850 is still the best AF in the nikon ecosystem. dpreview's take on z6/z7 firmware 3.0 makes it closer to the z7's AF however at close portrait distance the eye focus is misses pupils and overall AF hunts more in the dark than the 850.
the Z6/z7 are a great start but have faults.
It also sounds like the D850 has better colour rendition.
            Breathe a little easier, friendo!!

@spinferno: Well yeah, my decision maker was the double card slot actually coz I do weddings. I will wait for next generation nikon mirrorless.

      • Not very bad actually…as I I was prepared for this to come sooner or later 😉

        • +1

Master, teach me. Hahaha! Coz I think I will not get over it for few months. LOL. I’m GASing to buy now. LOL.

          • @jerome38: Now days you can buy some stocks and monitor them daily…I bet you will not feel buying anything for next few months 😉😉

            • +1

@JustNotGod: It’s 50% off stocks now. So black friday sale. Haha

OP,thanks to your post I have entered the world of FF mirrorless, thanks so much champ!!!

  • Hey OP, does the bonus pack for the Z7 include a XQD card? I can't find reference to it on the mynikonlife redemption site.

    • When the offer was first released it was explicitly advertised that I did (e.g in the banner material). Then it seems that the XQD card went missing from the banner but remained in the small print. Not sure if it changed since. DigiDirect are still advertising that the XQD card is part of the offer so personally I would hold them to it.

Seems Nikon has changed the promotions. Now there's nowhere showing XQD card on the promo page.

Update: my 50mm s lens photographers pack arrived today, just in time for lockdown!

    • Just wondering - did you get the XQD card either with the camera or the lens pack? Just as mentioned above Nikon were initially advertising XQD card as part of the photographer's pack then Nikon stopped advertising it. However, Digidirect are still advertising the XQD card as part of the redemption pack.

      • the box arrived today with just the fifty… but it's like worth 1k!

        • Maybe worth looking into the below comment!

        • Did you get an XQD with the camera?

      • +1

I've contacted them, if your purchased kit does not contain the card, then it will be delivered to you in the bonus pack.

        • How did you go with this? I just purchased the same deal from their eBay store.

          • @lukethefish: Drop them an email and will require some evidence as serial number, receipt etc.

            • @WayneY1991: But did you originally get an XQD card at all, either with the camera or through redemption, or did you have to contact digidirect to send one?

              • +1

@lukethefish: Nope, my kit does not include an XQD card originally. Then contact mynikonlife to get one. Maybe they have kind of dataset to see whether your kit alrdy contains one.
