Airbnb Waiving Cancellation Fees for Any Bookings (with Check-in Dates between Mar 14 - May 31) Worldwide

2711

Airbnb is updating its cancellation policy to allow guests to cancel reservations anywhere in the world for a full refund in light of the coronavirus pandemic

In response to the extraordinary events and global disruption to travel caused by COVID-19, today we are announcing updated coverage under Airbnb’s Extenuating Circumstances policy. Airbnb’s Extenuating Circumstances policy allows hosts and guests to cancel eligible reservations with no charge or penalty.

This policy now applies to existing reservations for stays and Airbnb Experiences made on or before March 14, 2020, with check-in dates between March 14, 2020 and April 14, 2020.

Updated: Now extended until May 31. (thanks jicks)

lol, I can cancel the two AirBnB bookings I made in France between Mar 14 - Apr 14, but not the one starting 16 April 2020. Is it going to be magically ok after 14 April?.

  • Got off Airbnb as part time host once coronavirus kicked off. Knew at some point Airbnb was going to shaft hosts. As host, take all the risk, Airbnb takes all the money.

    For the benefit of others:

    1. Have a 10 day stay in Hawaii from the 19th of April (5 days after the 14th April EC Policy cut off)
    2. Booking was made with STRICT cancellation policy (wording for this policy is a little strange, I read it originally was cancel before 14 days and you get full refund.. but it actually is cancel WITHIN 48 HOURS of making booking PLUS 14 days before check in for 100% refund)
    3. Spent 50 mins on hold with AirBnB

    Here's what happened:

    • AirBnB told me that my booking did not fall into the EC policy.
    • AirBnB reached out to the host to see if they would allow a cancellation.
    • Host did not agree to cancellation
    • AirBnB have informed me that their policies are fluid and might be extended beyond the 15th of April, so please check in with them every few days.

From my conversation with AirBnB rep - it did seem like the policy would be extended.
So my advice for those who do not fall into the EC policy is to not make any cancellations yet and just wait and see until at least 48 hours before your booking.

    • Same here, check in on April 30th, thanks for letting us know about your tedious phone call

    • Same here. We booked accommodation for Dark Mofo in mid June which has been cancelled.

Host won't refund our one night deposit…said to ask Airbnb for our refund.

They won't as it is outside the cut off date.

    • Government just announced a Level 4 Travel Ban, that should meet the airbnb extenuating circumstances policy now, surely?

      • It's not technically a ban, it's just advice. They can't legally stop you leaving the country.

        • True, even though they call it a ban, I guess technically it's a travel restriction in the form of advice.

Still under such Level 4 restrictions or advice, your travel and medical insurance is void, government assistance isn't available if you go. So hard to imagine AirBnB expecting people to fulfill their travel and reservations under such circumstances.. especially when their extenuating circumstances policy includes government restrictions.

Time will tell. At least my AirBnB host is a reasonable one in Japan and they're guaranteeing a full refund for coronavirus reasons regardless of their usual cancellation policy.

  • Has anyone had luck getting refunds after 14th April? I have one for the 19th

    • Yes but I messaged the host prior to submitting the cancellation and it was for our stay in Kyoto 4-8 May and the host has to agree to it. We got a full refund including the service fee.

My host has refused. I think I’m going to camp it out and hope for an extension

        • Same deal here, messaged our host in Honolulu for a stay commencing 6 May, didn't get a reply.

          • @SaintKev: I have contacted Airbnb support and they are ignoring me. Maybe their strategy is to ignore until your accommodation date lapses.

            • @FrugalDealHunter: I hope they've responded to you by now. I had to wait a couple of days before I received a response. I'm also in the same situation as you where my host refused a full refund. The Support rep basically advised me to wait it out… so waiting it is for now.

              • @holdthetea: They replied and said I wasn’t eligible since my date is after April 14th. Not sure if they think everything will be good after then or what.

                • @FrugalDealHunter: Not sure if you're aware, but they've extended the policy to cover check-in dates up til 31 May now. I put through a request for a full refund and have been approved. You just need to supply documentation/evidence that your travel has been affected/cancelled and therefore no longer able to make it to the reservation. All the best!

I really can't understand any host not refunding 100%.

Guests will turn up if they get no refund, and I definitely wouldn't want disgruntled people in accommodation I host.

  • So I have a reservation that os now covered by the date extension.

The host previously said they were going to accept the full refund (before the dates were covered) and refused.

Now it's not possible to request a Covid-19 refund as ot has already been rejected.

Does anyone know what the best course of action is?

    • Just give them a call - they will sort it out for you.

  • Hey everybody, i had airbnb accomodation booked in in April for the USA. With airline cancellations and the restrictions of international travel you should be able to receive a full refund as I have even if it falls out of the date bracket above. If you guys have any questions on the process I am more than happy to help out.

    • I've reported the post as the revision in dates is not just a revision in dates with the same conditions as in the initial offer, it comes with extra requirements.

Right now you can cancel all bookings until 31 May, however it is not a cash refund it is in the form of a travel credit to be used by end of 2021.

Now in terms of your point, you will only receive a full refund if the airline has cancelled on you, not if you cancelled.

As per Airbnb, to prove this you need to submit the below documents.

      Transportation cancellations or closures
      Required:

Proof of flight, train, or boat cancellation showing your name, travel dates, and locations matching the reservation details

Plus one of the following documents is also required:

Email or official announcement from the transportation provider confirming the suspension of all trips to the impacted area
Confirmation of total airport/train station/port closure in the your or listing’s location, with closure dates coinciding with the reservation

In regards to bans on international travel, the person I spoke to on phone at Airbnb said that a screenshot of our government website was not sufficient because it only has a start date and not an end date to the travel ban.

As per Airbnb's policy, you need the below to prove travel restrictions:

      Government restrictions on travel

Screenshot of official government site explaining restrictions that prevent travel from your location or to your destination
Effective dates of the restriction must overlap with your reservation by at least one day
      Excludes travel advisories
