Going into Self Isolation - Tips, Tricks

I will be returning from Singapore on Tuesday and will be forced into self isolation for 14 days. Not too bothered as I will have my wife and two young kids, paid leave and have some family support for supplies during this period.

Interested in any ideas from the community on ways to entertain the kids (4 and 1), limit spending (besides ubereats codes) and any other thoughts to share that might be helpful.

Thanks in advance!

  • Learn a new thing each day from youtube.

  • All the gamers are rejoicing at the quarantine! I am in that category but also have lots of home renoes to finish as well as a good time to clean out all those chockas cupboards that haven't been looked at in years. Hopefully not many cars on the road so can take the sporty car for a run!

How does one get from the airport back home?

If someone is driving you whether it be friend, taxi, or uber do said people also have to self-quarantine? Do they stop passengers with luggage at Sydney International Train station?

    • I have no idea, assume they will give some advice on that as we need to catch a taxi home.

No, they need to get home one way or another, so it is assumed they will use necessary precautions and limit contact. For example if you drive home, you may need to stop for petrol, just limit your exposure by being in the pay station (or use the card pay at the bowser) for as little time as possible. Don't spend 30 minutes choosing which pie you want and don't sit down for a meal. If you are required to use public transport/taxi, sit away from others (i know not always possible) and if you have one, wear a mask.

Unless they actually quarantine you, it is about reasonable exposure and limiting risk. If they are not paying to transport you, they can't expect you to go to extraordinary lengths.

Once you are at home, it is supposed to be isolation from everyone (unless they already live in your home, but you still limit exposure to them too).

This is all information I was provided by customs for my isolation :(

Disney Plus - 10 day free trial - it will drive you insane, it's not educational, but the kids will probably love it.

One month free - "A kid-safe, ad-free streaming library of read-aloud animated storybooks"
    https://www.vooks.com/

Reading Eggs - 2 week free trial
    https://readingeggs.com.au/parents/signup/

They might all be a bit old for the 1 year old, should be fine for the 4 year old.

Netflix/Stan/whatever other ones they have, free trials available if you don't already have them. Foxtel Now is 10 days. Mostly for the adults.

Did you see the deals for Print@home games? There are other places that have them. There are kids and adult (not xxx just more complex) games.

Offline and some including 1 year old:
    Make play dough
    Do paper mache
Painting - could also do kids hand/footprints
Get the kids involved in the cooking and helping around the house
Turn everything (non-breakable) in the house into musical instruments, fill up containers with noisy things
    Play balloon games
    Build a fort
    Camp/picnic in the Living room
Make your own child friendly high tea (with help from kids)
Look at old pictures of you and your wife
    Water play outside
Make cards for people, maybe for Easter, or for no reason at all
If you have any concrete in your yard - chalk drawing
Sock puppets - put on a show, get the 4 year old to put on a show
If you don't already have one, a cheap wading pool and fill it will anything messy.
Google fun activities for 1 year old/4year old/kids you can add free/cheap or just look through them yourself to see what you could easily/cheaply do.

Things like the cards/paintings could be a thank you for those who are helping you out.

    • These are great, thanks.

  • Well I got FF7 remake, Resident Evil 3 Remake preordered.

The world can shut down as far as I know……..lol

    LAN PARTY

    • CORONA PARTY!

  • Lucky you made it back to Australia. I had to cancel my flight because Singapore impose 14 day self quarantine. Now to find another way back to Australia

    • That sucks. All a bit of show, got handed a piece of paper with the guidelines, heard a couple audio announcements but thats it. No offers of masks etc walk straight out and grab a cab. Noting we wore masks self provided all the way.

Considering supermarkets are placing restrictions on products (if you're lucky enough to even get them) and suspending home deliveries…. we've started ordering readymade meals from a bunch of different providers.

Found a useful site that compares a whole bunch of aussie meal providers so you can get food delivered to your door. There's a decent amount of reviews as well. Here's a link - https://www.mealprep.com.au/providers

It's crazy how much stuff you can do, and crap you can find around the house when you have all this free time during Isolation. Best time to Declutter and Spring clean!

Make some bat soup to stock up for the next pandemic.

Nice entree before my steamed hams.

    • Bat soup can be frozen so you can eat in batches.

      /s

      • But only by a trade qualified batcher.
