Filled 6 Litres of Petrol in a 5 Litre Jar

Last Sunday, I filled 6+ Litres of petrol (95) in a 5L jar (https://www.bunnings.com.au/sandleford-5l-black-plastic-fuel…) from a Petrol station.

Either this jar can hold more than 5 Litres or the Petrol station is manipulating the volume of Petrol? (or something else??)

What do you think?

Thank you

my first topic here and not 100% sure that the selected category is right for it

I think that jar is rated to hold 5 litres.

  • +7

pour it into a measuring jug and advise the result

You do realise there needs to be air for the petrol gases to expand into safely? Did you fill to brim, as there is a clear fill line? OR was that at the fill line?

    • No, didn't fill to brim. I left reasonable vacuum so that i can put back the nozzle comes with this jar without any trouble of overflowing petrol.
I haven't notice any fill line for the jar.

      • +7

It's on the picture, is yours different? In fact the fill line says 5ltr, so more accurately it's the 5ltr line, did you ago above that? By the sounds, yes.

        • I'm thinking different due to OP's wording

Last Sunday, I filled 6+ Litres of petrol (95) in a 5L jar from a Petrol station

I'm thinking "jar" was bought from servo, Bunnings link is similar item (which is good since I was picture a 5L glass jar, not a jerrycan…)

          • @Chandler: Either way, OP has the dumb. Not responding kinda seals it.

            • @wiipantz:

Either way, OP has the dumb.

              What dumb does he have?

              • @eug: re read everything… particularly about just enough room for the hose/ nozzle. no mention of gas was only concerned of spillage. Dumb seems nearly as infectious as the current trending virus

      • +2

I haven't notice any fill line for the jar.

The jerrycan you linked has a clear line to 5L.

No, didn't fill to brim. I left reasonable vacuum so…

What is "reasonable"? The question that everyone's asked is whether you filled it above or below the line?

  • +10

The 5 litre Jerry cans can easily fit more than 5 litres .

  • +5

It's not uncommon for a plastic jerry can to hold more than stated.

5 litres is the safe fill level, the rest is space that allows for fuel and vapour expansion so that the plastic doesn't split.

  • +7

Easy to work out. Place container on scales and zero scales. Fill container with water to the fill line, not the absolute max it can hold, and place on scales. Should show 5kg give 1l of water = 1kg

I won't be surprised if it's off a bit but I doubt it holds 6l when filled to the correct level. If it holds the intended 5l and you were still able to put 6l in then the servo is skimming and should be reported.

    • -3

It will be "off a bit" as petrol has a different density to water and therefore weigh differently, albeit only a little

      • +1

They would weigh differently but 1l of water and 1l of petrol will still occupy the same volume. You're only weighing the water to determine how much that specific container is actually holding.

      • +2

Petrol actually weighs a lot less, but it's irrelevant for checking the accuracy of the volume with water.

      • Then fill it with water.

  • +10

    That ain't no jar.

    • Sangria jar.

    • +6

      When isn't a door a door… When it's ajar.

  • +7

Jerry cans are not measuring devices.

  • +1

The plastic will flex on the sides when full. This could be where the extra litre goes.

  • +3

What do I think? - I think this topic should never have been published.

  • -3

A 2 hour old new user, with another off the wall post, never to be seen again. The only overfill occurring here are the comments.

Why don’t we limit posts by newbies until 48hours after they join at least that will keep the crap posts to a minimum, as most just post and run.

    • +2

Why do you think it's a "crap" post?. I asked a genuine question. Which wall is right for this question?

      • -1

I have heard such petrol volume manipulation stories in an another country and want to make sure anyone seen such here in Australia.

      • +1

Many reasons. Jerry cans aren't an accurate measuring device. Jerry cans have significant headroom to allow for vapour.

    • +6

Isn't the exchange of knowledge the point of forums? The OP asked a genuine question, now he knows jerry cans have headroom to allow for vapour.

Why is asking what looks like a valid question a crap post? Are all users expected to automatically know that jerry cans have headroom for vapour?

      • -4

        Why?
With a bit of thought, OP could have easily used a kitchen measuring jug and done the test himself instead of panicking into believing that Australian petrol stations operate fraudulently.

        • Panicked? Fraudulent? You are trumping up his post with your thesaurus more than he intended.

He has posted his question to the forum and in so doing he has tapped into brighter minds than his own. Now, he knows that a kitchen measuring jug or some scales may help him get closer to the answer he seeks.

          Calm down.

        • instead of panicking into believing that Australian petrol stations operate fraudulently.

Maybe he read this news report last year and it was at the back of his mind.

Burn off the fuel and compare the explosion to the expected size of explosion from 5L of fuel vs 6L of fuel.

    • +1

This is the one true way to know for sure.

Getting Die Hard With a Vengeance flashbacks here 😂

      "You have just armed me"

OP is in deep poo with a 5L "jar" that holds 6L HAHAHA!

Clicked the link, then immediately closed it when I saw the title. Hope it doesn’t count as a view.

I'm curious, why do you dislike him.

        • +1

I watched a few videos ages ago. Found him obnoxious. Self important, foul mouthed, appealing to the lowest common denominator and too busy trying to promote his business, which is trying to get a cut on the price of a new car for you when typically you can get the same deal with some work yourself.

I now refuse to watch his rubbish and recommend others avoid it too, or at least be aware of his biases.

        • +1

He is not everyone's cup of tea but when it comes to insider knowledge and contacts he has them and works them.
I like that John is a strong customer advocate (he is selling his services after all) and I don't hear/see any media organisation who have the cojones to call out the industry's deficiencies. Not even the ABC who are not beholden to their advertising dollars.
He's not "news", he is more like a commentator (with his own biases) and I appreciate it.

  • As numerous people have pointed out, fuel isn't like water where you can fill to the brim and be all good.

You need to allow sufficient space for gasses to expand.

This is a catastrophe waiting to happen if you keep doing this. I bet you transported it in your boot too?

  • +1

I have had the same issue many times with my 5l or 10l containers when I fill with petrol. Can put at least an extra litre in and also wonder if it's the bowser ripping you off. Just think that if a bowser distributes 950 ml instead of 1L that is at least 5-6c per litre. 5% markup for the gas station owner. Fairly easy to do…
Never tested the theory with water though.

  • +3

Key point 5% of petrol bowsers audited have under poured .
    https://www.abc.net.au/news/2019-12-17/australian-petrol-bow…
Conclusion businesses won't stop with pitiful fines they are issuing and minimal testing .

  • Well it is what you think….

Did you double check the capacity of the container?

    What are you asking us

  • Had a friend fill up 65 litres of fuel at a Caltex when his car can only hold 55 litres max. Definitely not the first time petrol stations are screwing people over! Most people are too naive to think they're not doing it here and there. Happening all over the world

    • You do realise cars have a fuel reserve right? At the point your car is at E you have an additional 100km.

This is to prevent people neglecting to fill up and getting stranded.

      • You're an idiot that's including the reserve! His only holds about 5 litres as reserve. Maybe in some newer cars it go that far but nothing anywhere close to that normally. You don't even know what car it is yet your running your mouth as if you know it all.

  • Just filled up 2x20l jerry cans. 47L on the bowser. There was no line on the containers to indicate where 20l should be, so I guess I overfilled.

    • The cans are rated to safely hold 20L of petrol.
You can definitely fit more than 20L in, whether it is safe or not is different issue.

      • Yup. Just providing another example. It might not be a conosirwcy by the petrol stations.

  • +2

    Typical Karen (not necessary OP):
    * Accuses petrol stations of ripping them off
    * Refuses to check accuracy of their own jerry cans/containers
    * Refuses to believe mandatory check/calibration of bowsers and the associated fines exist
    * Refuses to shop elsewhere
    * B!tches about it to poor souls behind the counter
    * B!tches about it online

  • I've got a couple of jerrys, 10L and 20L.
They have capacity mark on them, but never matches what the bowser says.

I usually put 11L and 22L in them and still doesn't meet the marking.

  • There is clearly a plimsoll line (fill line) on the outside of the container. I can see it in the photos.

    Like beer/wine glasses in Europe.

  • Happened to me just now, had a few hundread millilitres maybe 200-300ml left in the container to start with, filled up to 10L mark no higher and came out as 11.17L on the pump. Maintained air tight seal for 90% of the fill too..
