  • What’s the equivalent model on Dell laptops? G1?

    • Probably the G3

      • +4

Bit of a downgrade from the G3. The video card that comes standard with the G3 is the 1650, a considerable step up from the 1050. That being said, it is about $500 cheaper from the RRP of the G3 ($1,359).

        • +1

RRP isn't a good comparison. The better option is xps 15 ($1500 on special) if budget allows.

        • G3 was on sale not long ago for $899.

      Try the Inspiron 15 7000. GTX 1650, i7-9750H, 97Wh battery in 1.6kg chassis for ~$1160 after shopback 9.5% cashback and code INSTANT8.

Bought this on the official Lenovo website about two months ago for $999. Been using it extensively every day since I got it. Specs-wise it is amazing value. The Lenovo Vantage program that comes pre-installed with the laptop is surprisingly good and I didn't uninstall it like some of the other bloatware that came with. One of the best features of this laptop is its upgrade-ability. This specific build comes with both an empty 2.5" drive bay and room for two DDR4 RAM sticks. I have since taken out a 128GB SSD from my old computer and installed it in the laptop (the laptop comes packaged with the necessary screws and cables for the drive upgrade). I plan to upgrade the SSD drive to an ever bigger size when I need to, and even the NVMe can be upgraded, although I personally prefer to avoid all the business of cloning the OS(too lazy). Also plan on upgrading the RAM to 16 or even 32 when necessary. Amazing laptop. The only downside would have to be the weight; it is comparatively heavy to other laptops but I guess that's expected of a gaming laptop; you get used to it after a while. Another downside would have to be its battery life, which is pretty short. I had never lasted more than 4-5 hours on a single charge, and that's on battery saver. Again, expected of a budget-level gaming laptop. Bring your charger around with you. Aesthetic is quite sleek too, since it doesn't look like a gaming laptop and you can use it in public without those flashy RGB colours. It's a simple black build and you have the option of three different settings for the white-illuminated keyboard: off/dim/bright. If you are curious about anything with this laptop, let me know. I'll try to answer your questions as best I can.

    • How is the touchpad? I have a Lenovo Y50 that's a few years old now and found that the touchpad is virtually unusable. The keyboard however is amazing though compared to my Macbook's.

      • +4

The touchpad has been relatively reliable for me, at least for the last 2 months that I have been using it. Honestly can't predict how well it would work in a few years. It's light on the touch but there is the rare instance in which it would incorrectly register your finger's gesture, not really enough to annoy me at all. One of the distinguishable features that this touchpad has over the Y50 is that the left and right mouse clicks are actual, solid buttons and not integrated as part of the touchpad (as you can see from the pictures). This is a lifesaver for me personally; the clicks are loud, solid and always register. Recently been using the soft-touch smart clicks though (one-finger touch for left click, double-finger touch for right click, double finger drag for scroll etc.) and it's completely usable for me as someone who does a lot of reading and highlighting on my device. Again, you have to expect that the device will perform as per its price point, but its definitely of good value. Hope this answered your question mate. The keyboard is definitely amazing and I rate it highly, the travel to register is such a nice distance and the amount of pressure needed to register keys is well-balanced too.

        • How portable is it? What is the weight of it?

          • +3

@atom1319: 2.3kg as per the official specs, so pretty weighty. The shape of the laptop is a bit clunky due to the unique rear port hub it has on the back. I have a backpack with a laptop sleeve that fits right in. It's not the king of portability, I pretty much always bring my charger around because the battery doesn't really last that long. It's never going to replace something like a Razer blade stealth or an ultrabook because 1) it's $850, and 2) it's not meant to be slim and light. Never had a problem with bringing it around though; it's plastic but extremely sturdy and the weight does help with that sturdiness.

    • How is the screen in terms of colour?

      • +2

Could be better but it's not bad I think…

      • +3

Colour accuracy is good, I mostly use the built-in eye care mode through Lenovo Vantage software that yellows it a bit, but reduces the blue light. Brightness is where it suffers; it can't go too bright and if you're in an extremely sunny area expect some problems with viewing.

Got the Y530 i7 8750H 16GB in Feb-19 for $1135. Good value productivity laptop. Came with 16GB RAM and 128GB SDD plus 1TB hard drive. The touchpad buttons are hard and make noise when pressed but the touchpad itself is pretty good. Started using touchpad itself for clicking instead of the buttons (1 finger tap left click, 2 fingers tap right click)

Appreciate the detailed description of your experience!

Screen is terrible for accuracy and gamut. So don't count on doing any photo or video editing.

  • +3

A month delivery from China, so doubt it'll be any time soon with current world events.

  • Ah sorry the d-pad key boards for children isn't even gaining my attention, you can make a laptop worth 1 million dollars and with that keyboard layout I'll rather eat vmy own vomit.

    • I believe they made it with that keyboard layout so they can keep the keyboard keys full size for adult fingers and add a numpad rather than have to shrink the keys down to accommodate the numpad

  • not many T series laptop deals popping up here!? I have looked around and it doesn't look like its easy to get a deal on them in Australia. I got a T430s with i7 16gb ram and 1Tb SSD that is still going amazingly strong, but probably upgrading in a few months to pass the current one down.

Got it used for $500 5 years ago - have been keeping my eye out but haven't seen a deal this good for years.

T495 and T495s are on special, sale finished today.

      • plus T480s

  • I was really tempted by this laptop, but after watching some reviews the webcam position has put me off. Being at the bottom of the screen it looks straight up your nose, and the screen needs to be tilted too far back when using it.

    • yeah, i don't use the webcam, but it's a weird position. I guess you could clip one onto the top of the screen, but that's a bit of a pain

  • Already out of stock, please update.

    • looks to be back in stock. i had marked as expired but have removed that

As a word of warning, do NOT buy anything with a GTX1050 or worse if you are looking to play modern games at 1080p Low-Medium. It cannot keep up anymore, only runs games 2017 and older.

  • I’m flabbergasted by the many upvotes on this terrible deal as gtx 1050 is so outdated. The G3 gaming laptop with gtx 1650 that was going for $899 not long ago had much less votes so go figure on how people think.

    • Reviews say that the g3 screen is horrible with shit colours and 60ms response time. It's not the be all end all you chirp about.

      • -1

You need to pipe down as this has a “shit” screen with a 60hz panel and an outdated discrete graphics card.

        • Except I never defended it.

          • -1

@Skinnerr: No you just like to chirp on how “shit” the g3 is, but when compared to this terrible deal it’s much better.

            • +2

              @MuddyClear:

you just like to chirp on how “shit” the g3 is

I said the screen is shit if you can't accept this and that that is a major flaw for a gaming laptop then we're at an impasse.

You are making an argument where there isn't one. If the screen on the g3 was better it would be the ultimate budget gaming laptop. I've done my reading and the research says that gaming with that screen is a hindrance because of slow response times. If you were serious about gaming you'd know that milliseconds count.

Also I never claimed this laptop was better so let's make this crystal clear despite your bolding and shit, this laptop isn't better as it has an inferior graphics card. So get off your damn high horse.

              • @Skinnerr:

It's not the be all end all you chirp about.

No one here said it was so what are you on about?

I said the screen is shit if you can't accept this and that that is a major flaw for a gaming laptop then we're at an impasse.

No one here said the g3 had a great screen. Again what are you on about?

g3 screen is horrible with shit colours and 60ms response time

This laptop as well as the g3 are entry level laptops and are priced accordingly. Colour accuracy isn’t a high priority on gaming laptops vs those for productivity. If you’ve done your research you would know this.

You are making an argument where there isn't one.

No, that would be you since you’ve now admitted the following: ”this laptop isn't better as it has an inferior graphics card”. Well that’s what I’ve said from the very start so again what are you arguing about?

  • My game recommend GTX 1060 so I pass this time. Not enough spec for many games.
