  • Wish the price on the WH1000 was as good!

    • The WH-1000XM3 cost more in RRP terms than these, by $150

  • How's the noise cancelling compared to the big headphones?

    • Take a guess

      • -5

Usually better, since these are both earplugs AND active noise cancelling.

        • +7

I've got a pair. They're good, but definitely not as good as any over ear headphones

        • But over-ears have better passive cancellation…

          • +3

@Tech5: Interesting; My Soundepeats offer significantly better isolation while Off, than my friends Bose QC30.
On, is a different story; but passively, I find putting a foam earplug in your ear (any canal phone) much more effective.

            • @MasterScythe: Depends on the type of noise(s) you're trying to block as well.

        • Not sure why you got neg.

I have QC35 and this one, I can tell you with a good fit foam tip, they isolate noise better than my QC35.

          • @goraygo: I have foam tips. They don't compare to my Bose 700 which is almost silent when in a plane. You can definitely still hear the noise around you with in-ears.

    • +2

You are comparing apples and oranges. This will not block out the noise entirely but will subdue most of the noise.

      • Wear tradesman ear muffs on top for ultimate noise isolation.

    • +1

Not as good as over ears, but still great for what they are.

    • About 50% as effective in my experience. Still knocks out some of the background noise but it's not like the Wh1000xm3 where it's almost muting the whole train.

    • How's the noise cancelling compared to the big headphones?

Not near as good, but still noticeable compared to without it.

    • Useless when it's windy

  • Awww I figured these would support Apt-X but I was wrong, also the Sony store just refuses to give you actual tech specs.

  • +3

Historical low is the $175 you could get when combining the AMEX offer and Sony voucher mid last year, so this is still a ways off. Nothing has come close since though, so this might be as good as it'll get for now.

    • +1

That had a significant barrier to entry. The Sony voucher was not open to everyone.

This is the best ever price without combining exclusive offers (of which the above had not one but two). I believe you also had to buy two of them not one, so a further barrier. With that many caveats it shouldn't even count as the benchmark price to beat. You're never going to see that price again unless it's on clearance. It required a combined stacking of too many other concurrent deals.

In my case I got 12% cashback based on $319 and TRS of $29. So after a price protection claim, I will have paid $191.20.

  • is it worth paying more for airpod pro? I heard airpod pro feels less stuffy as it lets air through or something?

    • +8

If you have an iPhone. Get the airport pros. If you have an android. Get these.

      That's my take on it

      • What about the Samsung Galaxy Buds Plus available for $209 on the education portal? Most reviews are saying its quite good and a definite improvement on the original galaxy buds.

        • +2

Got mine this week and love them. Absolutely some of the best sounding True Wireless Stereo IEMs on the market. For that price I would pounce but do your own research as well.

Edit: If you have a Samsung phone with Dolby sound, and use Spotify a lot, it's a 100% no brainer.

          • @theory: would you get the Buds Plus if using iPhone?

            • @ltwo: I'm sure they would be fine but I think you miss out on some of the integration and options. Probably worth researching on your own, there may be a better option for iPhone users.

        • -1

Sound quality is simply not up there

          • @MagicMushroom: Compared to what? There are ALWAYS better headphones.

Edit: Out the box I agree, though. With Dolby Atmos on and some equaliser tweaks you can find online for the type of music you like, the sound quality is top notch.

    • +2

I had these sony's now I have airpod pro's. Note I'm not an audiophile where I can discuss bass levels etc. But I found the Airpods Pro way more comfortable and the noise cancellation was a lot better. One aspect where it was better was when it was very windy and walking against windy the sony sounded very bad, they couldn't counter that noise as well, but the Apple's did a great job.

Sure integration is a key selling aspect but it's not that much of a big deal like you get some options to turn off noise cancellation etc, but you can do that even if you're connected on android, if you press the stem.

Anyways I would seriously go to an apple store, buy a pair and try it for 14 days, it's the best way for you to tell if it's good.

      • Yeah I agree wind noise is an issue.

Try the foam tips on you Sony and then compare to your AirPod pro again. Sony definitely is better in ANC + passive over AirPod Pro. I tested them in a noisy shopping centre.

    • is it worth paying more for airpod pro? I heard airpod pro feels less stuffy as it lets air through or something?

If you use iphone and don't need ANC, yes. And also don't mind paying more.

  • What is the b refer to ? Wf1000xm3b

How is the call and mic quality in these. I have a Bose MX1000MX3 and I can confidently say that the mic is shit

    • There was a firmware upgrade a couple of months ago that seems to have fixed mic issues. I've read bad reports but certainly no problems for me since the upgrade.

      • +2

The firmware increased the gain of the mic. The issue is that it also boosted the volume of background noises and it drowns out the voice. It is great for quiet environment but unusable for noisy places like train stations.

        • exactly, it is virtually unusable in a noisy environment. Sucks because it is supposed to be a NC headset and it is from Sony

    • Mic is shit even after firmware upgrade. It’s from not-usable to just-acceptable.

    • +1

Bose MX1000MX3? I can confidently say there's no such thing.

      • +1

Sony. Haven't had the coffee yet

    • +1

How is the call and mic quality in these.

Passable in a quiet environment. In a noisy environment, hard to hear.

  • +2

Almost made the purchase, then I realised I have Good Guys Commercial account. It's even cheaper there; $237 + $5 delivery for me.

    • +4

      Weird flex, but ok

  • Unuseable during phone calls and very uncomfortable in ear. Sound quality is better than airpods pro though. Returned mine and wont buy again. The WH is heaps better.

    • +1

i replaced the default tip with foam tips and it's a lot more comfortable.

You get a few foam ones inside the box.

They're not going to be as good as over ears, but sometimes you want something more compact and discreet than carrying around over ears which will probably require bringing the case with you.

  • +1

Good price, but for me I can not wear those earbuds too long. I have to use my wh1000xm

    • How come you can't use them for long?

      • My ears start to feel uncomfortable after maybe 40 mins. This is only my case, many out there can wearing for hours as they claim.

      • +2

he probably finds the default tips uncomfortable.

You get an assortment of other sized tips plus foam tips in the box, so I would recommend trying a different set.

I use imitation comply tips and they feel great.

Just this week have been evaluating true wireless earphones.

Tossing up between the Apple Airpods Pro, Jabra Elite Active 75T, the Samsung Galaxy Buds Plus, or these Sony ones.

My biggest concern was call quality. Upon deep searching I found that all of these models have very negative comments on Reddit regarding call quality. Apparently the Sony's have recently had firmware upgrades to somewhat improve.

However, then I watched video reviews where the actual call quality was shown (and heard). And really, there was little differnce between them all. In noisy street areas they all struggle. But in normal quiet environments, office, home, they all seem to do quite well.

Unless one loves hip hop, and thumping bass, then the Sony seemed to come out as having the best sound quality for music listening. (The Jabra were good for doof-doof stuff apparently.)

In the end, fortuitously seeing this bargain this morning, my decision was made for me. At this price (cheaper than all the others I was considering - even less than the non-noice-cancelling models), the Sony's were a no-brainer for me.

Note that I do not have unrealistic expectations. Of course they won't be as isolating as over-head headphones. Of course the call quality won't be as good as dedicated phone headsets. Of course the battery won't last forever. And ANC will reduce battery further.

    • +1

People complain these are "unusable" for calls, especially in noisy environments. Just on a hunch, I would have thought the Airpods would be the best for calls.

      • Reviewers I trust have the Galaxy Buds+ as the new one to beat.

    • +2

As the owner of Jabra 75t, Samsung Buds and Sony WF, I stopped using wireless earbuds to answer calls and use my smartwatch instead. Since I mainly wear earbuds to listen to music I can agree Sony has the best overall sound quality hands down. But the Jabra 75t is still my daily driver because I'm a bass lover and the Jabra delivers, plus it is the sleekest looking one on the market. Just replace the stock silicon eartips with properly fitted foam ones and it'll work just as well as ANC on other earbuds.

Make sure you download the Sony companion app and you can fully customise how the ANC works on the Sony earbuds. The Sony app is the most feature-packed compared to other brands.

    • My biggest concern was call quality. Upon deep searching I found that all of these models have very negative comments on Reddit regarding call quality. Apparently the Sony's have recently had firmware upgrades to somewhat improve.

when the microphone is on your ears and that far from your mouth, this is going to happen.
