Desktop PCI Wireless Network Card Recommendations?

Hi

Having recently set up with a 100/20 NBN connection, my desktop computer's speed test runs are coming up short compared to my Iphone 6/Ipad.

I'm guessing it's an issue with my network card not working as well as it should be, what's a good PCI wireless network card to use that can receive a strong signal through a wall?

i'm currently using this https://www.tp-link.com/au/home-networking/adapter/tl-wn951n…

Any tips appreciated!

Move the antenna until you get good signal.

Although I cant work out if you really want PCI or PCI-E

  • ah should have mentioned PCI-E also! thanks

looks like this is what i should look into, tried moving the antennas on my TP link card to all sorts of different angles and i'm still only getting 15 - 30 mbps out of my 100 mbps connection.

Either look into getting one that has a high gain antenna, consider adding a Ubiquiti AP to your home or maybe consider EoP adapters.

I'm not an expert but could it not be because OPs phone is likely running on 802.11ac/802.11ax and this wireless adapter is only running on 802.11n?

    • We have a winner :)

Hopefully powerline adapters can be an option for you. I tried a ~$50 USB wifi adapter and was completely unusable. Haven't tried PCI wireless network cards but never had luck with wifi connectivity to custowm/own built PC

    • Most cheap USB wifi adapters are horrible. PCI-E with external antennas work well most of the time.

    • Other option is to get a flat lay Ethernet cable and press it into the space between the wall and floor for ‘wireless’ ethernet.

The issue is the TP-Link TL-WN951N is only wireless N and that's why your getting slow speeds. Moving the antennas won't help.

These ASUS PCI-E adapters are great and can do 100/20Mbps plus.

      thanks, I'll look into these!

  • I bought a Fenvi adapter and used it with a Intel 9260 (which includes Bluetooth) from AliExpress (can be bought off eBay as well). Note, can buy the adapter with/without the network card. Probably works out to be around $50.

This one includes the 9260, https://www.ebay.com/itm/283054383506 though being from China shipping may be a little slow.

  • While everyone is here, any recommendations for a good USB wireless card/adapter, preferably with bluetooth?

Have a techfast pc which unfortunately can't fit a pcie card due to the placement of the graphics card.

  • USB / PCI-E won't really matter. It's the tech inside. Just buy something AC1900+. TP Link is a good budget option. Asus are one of the best.

    • thanks, just curious, would there be a noticeable difference between AC1300 and AC1900 on an 100mbps NBN connection?

      • Probably, it will depend on your house and distance between devices tho.

  • I grabbed this Gigabyte card. Has been working great with reliable speeds on my 100/40 plan. Comes with an external antenna with a magnetised base and also has the latest version of Bluetooth if you have a spare USB header on your motherboard. It supports 802.11a/b/g/n/ac.
