By far the best value ultrabook I could find. Dell running 30% off with Cashrewards also doing 10% at Dell.

I was originally looking at XPS 13’s when this caught my eye. Much better value. Review here also: https://www.pcmag.com/reviews/dell-inspiron-14-7000-7490

Additional versions with an i7 processor or / and graphics card also available. The integrated graphics suit my needs though. Haven’t looked in detail at the 15 inch or 2 in 1 7000 series units as not what i’m after but may be some great bargains there too.

Edit: CashRewards now 8.5%

  • Seems pretty good value.

The code doesn't work on the 15 inch Inspiron sadly.

The 2 in 1 might be good for some people since you get the active pen included which can be a pricy extra.

    • Looks like they’ve already reduced the 15’s 35 percent rather than needing a code.

      • Good to know the other option for 15", they are cheaper due to 9th gen processor. 14" comes with 10th gen processor.

        • I’d say the 15 is being replaced

  • +2

xps has much better quality than this? I think I am still waiting for the update of xps15

    • +3

XPS are a bit nicer but a huge jump more expensive for the same specs.

      • I was originally planning on getting an XPS 13. I think the gap in quality has reduced greatly with this model based on the review I linked to. Similar spec XPS 13 would be around $1800 with a 15% discount they’re offering. Can’t see any reason to justify that

      • It's not same specs though. Display on this laptop is 300 nits whereas XPS 13 is usually 400+ nits and Lenovo Legion is 500 nits.

Display brightness may not matter to you but these are not the same specs. I will pay more for brightness since it means the laptop is more usable outdoors.

        • I said similar. Only difference is the brightness which won't be an issue for most (and isn't terrible either). Other difference I believe is the ports. More new gen ports ont he XPS but majority will prefer having a couple of USB 3 ports

        • Yes. XPS have better quality panels with wider colour gamut and better accuracy. In general they are all round nicer to use due to design and material.

          • @rictee: Have you used this model? Any feedback specific to it?

            • @alfawex: No but I switched to XPS 2 years ago and never looked back. Yes it costs more but IMO it's reasonable when spread out over a number of years. It is just a more premium feel (hard to put in tangible terms) which provides more enjoyment everytime it is used.

              • @rictee: Based on the review linked above the build quality appears to be close to the XPS now so i'm interested to see. I had an XPS 14 a couple of years ago

  • wonder what are delivery times to Regional QLD.Need a Laptop by friday.

    • +1

Don't bother, 5 business days is too few for Dell between ordering & delivery.

This is the only one in stock and ready to send tomorrow: https://www.dell.com/en-au/shop/dell-laptops/inspiron-14-700…

I’d think it’d make it but i’d be ringing to make sure

      • +1

Make sure if you follow that path that you follow the specific things you have to do to get the order quickly. Have to phone up among other things.

Is Cashrewards 10% on top of this 30% discount?

    • +1

      Yes

  • Not going to lie, This is much better deal than a Surface Laptop 3. Sadly the Surface will hold value as this is a Dell and there's just too many of them and dif configs.

    • +4

If U extensively make use of the laptop till kingdom come… I wouldn't worry about resale values as part of decision making (resale val is just a bonus).

Harder question is will this be a suitable machine for my purpose, what happens if it becomes a problematic machine and how about warranty response and length, etc etc.

      • Dell have been really great with warranty work in my experience

    So it's $1070 after cashback?

    • +1

If it all goes smooth it looks like it.

    • +2

      $1081.18
GST is excluded in calculating cashback.

  • FYI; often Dell Precision models aren't in these sales but they are all 25% off also.

  • Anyone knows how to select the rose gold colour with black keyboard?

By the way the Inspiron 15 7000 Laptop is 35% off on clearance, down from $1999 to $1299:

    https://www.dell.com/en-au/shop/dell-laptops/inspiron-15-700…

This is pretty much a gaming laptop, probably better than the lower end XPS deals.

    • 8gb ram, is that customisable?

      • +1

pretty sure its soldered in without any extra slot. So you'll have to choose the higher spec model with the 16gb. Only one you can really upgrade is the storage (depending on model support for optane).

edit. was refering to the 14" model.

        • Yep, unfortunately, ot looks like the 14" model has on-board RAM, which isn't replaceable.

Just as a heads up, I think the 10% Cashrewards for Dell ended at midnight last night. I bought earlier than midnight (~9pm) but nothing showing up in CR yet, aside from in the "Click History". Is that normal? I've got not adblockers or anything of that sort.

    • Now 8.5%

      • Now 3.5% at Cashrewards. But,Shopback increased the cash back to 10% at Dell.

  • code also forks for 15" 2in1, not a bad price and you get touch screen

  • Is the Inspiron build quality better than 5 years ago? I bought my XPS 13 back then due to this very reason and it has been rock solid and hammered every day and still works perfectly.

I drool every time I see new Dell's for sale but given my XPS13 still suits my needs, I struggle to buy a new one.

    • Which XPS 13 is that? I Just bought the XPS 13 9350 i7 6560u from eBay and waiting to get it delivered. Just wanted to know how's the battery going so far for you? Would really appreciate if share your daily use experience please.

      • +1

It is a 2014 or 2015 model with the i5 and no touch screen (1080p no 4k). I probably use it 90% of the time plugged in though. Although I use to take it to uni and it would last me 4 hours or so on charge. These days though I'd be struggling to get to 2 hours on just battery alone (maximum brightness on all the time though).

I don't do any encoding/video editing or anything serious on it. So YMMV if you need it to be a true workhorse.

Edit: just for reference, I unplugged this laptop 20 minute ago and the battery gauge says I still have 4.5 hours left of charge. Just browsing and playing music atm though.

        • Awesome!! Thanks for the info.

I'd pay an extra $400 and get the Latitude business notebooks. FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAR better build quality.

    • you'd like to think so. we had a major client that purchased approx 150 x Dell Latitude E7440 (a while back). Most failed with dead motherboards after their warranty (well due for updates anyhow). A few within warranty period which were replaced. Latitudes are ok due to their 3yr wty.

      • e had a major client that purchased approx 150 x Dell Latitude E7440

        Do you work for Dell?

        • nope

          • @id: The E7470 and above have been fantastic.

            • +1

@Numlock: not bad. not perfect as expected we will have failures across all board, either dell, lenovo or hp.

just associated with a company that is dell & lenovo partner. left hp ages ago. forgot we also deal with ms surface stuff

      • We experienced similar at our company, though we had them swap out systems. Early E7440's were a stain on Dell's reputation. So much so that they killed production for a while as they sorted out issues. The later E7440's, and the replacement E7450's has no such problems.

Every once in a while they get it wrong. With Latitude E4300, had over 200+ keyboards replaced under warranty, and a few out of warranty @ ~$20 each. The next gen E4310 we had almost no keyboard failures.

    • Will also be bulkier which takes away one of the major appeals of the 7490.

  • Wait for XPS13 deals? Why can't Dell make XPS14?

    • Yeah, why cant they make dell xps12 while they're at it

  • Got one question: Is this a BIG deal that following the U.S Dell President Day Sale?

Not sure if the sitewide-30%-off comes every year in Aussie
