Anyone Can Identify This Noise from My Auto Gearbox? Engine off, Key on

Car is 96 Lancer CE 1.5 engine with auto tranny. The car drives fine when the engine is up and running, shifts beautifully, reverse okay too. Just this annoying whirring noise when changing gear when the engine is OFF and the key is on (one turn before start) to R,D,3,2,L Except for P and N. It is something to concern?

Here is the youtube video for sound.

when changing gear when the engine is OFF

    Why are you doing this?

    • I'm learning to know my car.. its the same age as me. I don't want be left stranded. Better safe than sorry? I don't know what I'm doing.

Too broke to afford a mechanic, so I need to learn to fix it myself

Perhaps it's a warning not to do what you're doing?

Why are you changing gears when you are not going anywhere?

Going downhill in neutral? Saves me some gas aye

      • Do not do this. It is dangerous and not good going from neutral back to drive while the vehicle is moving and the engine running.

You are saving stuff all in fuel.

Please tell me you don't turn the engine off going down hills???

No, no it doesn't. Not to mention it's stupid and quite possibly dangerous, aye.

Aye, you've just identified the cause of damage to your automatic gearbox.

      • Who puts a lancer on gas?

      • +3

Based on that logic, the next step would be to put the tranny into the R position, you might even get some of the fuel back.

Then when it completely dies put into P

  • Frustrated fauna background noise.

Check to ensure you have enough transmission fluid in your gearbox.

Highly unlikely that it is related to the transmission if the engine isn't running. Nothing really goes on in the trans if the engine isn't running as there is no oil pressure. It may just be a solenoid valve self check sequence it goes through when the ignition is turned on.

If it annoys you that much… "DON'T DO IT!"

  • Sounds like corona virus to me

      Lancer

      Corona was made by Toyota

  • This is normal behavior for a Mitsubishi auto trans.

  • Might be that you ran out of blinker fluid, you can buy some at Supercheap Auto.
