Weird NBN/ISP DHCP Issue

Hi all,

My current FTTP NBN is on Kogan so it uses an automically assigned IP with no PPPoe or authentication details needed to be entered.

Recently I discovered that if I unplug my laptop, it would disconnect the internet connection and my Asus RT-AC68U would give me the error 'Your ISP's DHCP server is not working'

As soon as I plug my laptop back into the ethernet, the internet would come back on.

I've tried cloning my MAC address into the WAN settings but it doesn't seem to work either.

Anyone else had this issue?

Thanks

  • Factory reset the router? Just a guess but that is probably the second most popular answer to "power cycling".

    • Yep done that

Have you tried changing the DNS settings in the router? It looks like your laptop is acting as a DNS or DHCP server.

Thanks, will check that setting out.

My laptop can even be asleep, as long as it's still plugged in

  • With IPOE try the following settings on your router:-

Select Automatic IP as the WAN connection type.

There is no need to enter a Username and password

    Authentication None

    Host name blank

    • Yep that's what my settings are

It works fine as long as my is plugged in

I recently did switch from Wi-Fi to Ethernet via a switch so not sure if this has an effect

  • sounds like your laptop is getting the kogan DHCP IP and not your switch/modem or your NAT isn't setup

paste a screenshot of your modem's settings/status when connected and do an ipconfig on your laptop as well

    • my wan settings seem ok, showing my kogan IP & Kogan gateway

  • Do you have any other devices with an Ethernet port? If you do can you plug it in and see if the internet works?

I want to know if the laptop is directly correlated with your internet connection status or if it is something else.

    • I have other devices on the same switch but it does seem like it's the laptop as whenever I unplug it, it will disconnect DHCP on router, once I plug it in, it will turn back on

  • Since there is a network switch in place, try connecting your laptop directly to the router and see if the issue occurs?

  • Stock firmware or Merlin ?

    • updated to latest stock firmware since it started happening.

      Will give Merlin another go

  • Update:

Unplugged my laptop (this is via a type-c hub with power pass through) and after a minute or so the same DHCP error occured.

I then unplugged the ethernet port that was feeding my switch and the internet connection came back on.

I've now swapped the ports around to see if that makes any difference.
I did notice that when the USB hub has the type-C power cable & ethernet port plugged in, the activity light on the switch flashes, this turns off when the power plug isn't connected.

It seems to have fixed itself as I left my laptop unplugged for a while and it didn't disconnect.

  • ok, I was wrong and it's still the same.

I'm starting to think that the Kogan NBN is using my laptop as the DHCP. Previously when my NBN went down, I had to do a bit of troubleshooting and they got me to connect directly to the NBN fibre box which worked but not via my router.

    • Change the laptop NIC settings back to default.

Disconnect your laptop, router and switch for 1 hour.

After waiting connect your router to the NTD and the DHCP server should give you an IP.

      • ok will give this a go

        • Did you get it working?

          • @Twix: haven't left it for an hour as I need to find the right time to do it
but I did unplug it a few times and it stayed on

            • +1

              @impoze: Yeah don't annoy the household :)

  • Some screenshots of my router settings

    • On the 1st SS, any reason for the subnet mask to be .192?
2nd SS, try change DHCP mode from aggressive to something else.

      • not sure where to change that as it's set automatic

I did wonder why it wasn't the normal 255.255.255.0

I've tried DHCP mode from aggressive to normal but same results
