2019? This looks like the 2017 model?

    • +1

I believe this is the 2017 with incorrect specs as the images include the old remote.

Technically speaking by labeling it 'Gen 2' its not incorrect as there was the initial 2015 release followed by the slightly updated version in 2017 (which i believe is the one currently for sale here).

    • +1

This is not the 2019 model.

Dolby Vision isn't listed, pictures are of 2017 version, listing says Gen 2 (which would be 2017 version), etc.

They might have stuffed up the listing.

  • This is a great price for a 2019 I was expecting the 2019 model to come in over $300.

Edit: is this really the 2017?

Is this better than Xbox One S?

    • Better for what?

      • +1

        Things and stuff.

  • +6

Not the 2019 model. Look at the remote

  • +3

Who needs the Kwik-E-Mart Nvidia Shield?

      I dooooooooooooo

welll done, lads. i clicked on this deal just to make this comment.

        • +4

          Thank you, come again!

  • +3

I can neither confirm or deny the actual model. Hahaha.

Quick research shows 2019 has Bluetooth v5
This model in post has Bluetooth 4.1(2017 model)

    • +1

You don't even have to research it to that level of detail - as others have pointed out it's the remote that came with the 2015 and 2017 models (there were some slight differences, such as coin battery and no headphone jack on the 2017 version).

      Here's a post of the differences - https://www.reddit.com/r/ShieldAndroidTV/comments/6afxgq/the…

  • Damnit I bought without confirming the model, I just assumed based on this listing's heading that it's the 2019 edition. I've emailed the store for confirmation.

  • Thanks OP but it's not the 2019 model

  • -1

    misleading title, 2017 gen2

  • -1

    Disappointing misleading post

  • +1

Confirmed its the old model, not 2019.

For those keen for the AU launch, the new Shields have been spotted on Mwave (pricing has since been removed, but was listed as $349 for the Pro and $249 for the tube), with an ETA of mid to late March:

    • Surprisingly my father in law bought the 2019 model at JB Hifi sunshine coast yesterday. I didnt believe him initially but he sent a picture. I just want to buy the new remote but its never been in stock.

      • Oh wow - nice!

JB has never stocked the Nvidia Shield before, but I was quietly confident they would start stocking the new 2019 model (and I'm sure we will see them in Officeworks / Good Guys etc too).

Which model did he buy, and how much?

        • The pro model, non-tube. I will have to ask him price.

  • +2

Sorry Guys have official confirmation from Apu's World - this is 2017 model

  • -1

Misleading post as not 2019 model. Please correct and is also Sold Out.

  • From the seller

"Hi there the new unit does not exist in Australia it won't be out for 3-6 months."

So yeah this is the 2017 model. Not that it's a bad unit but I could have picked up one of these for $199 not that long ago…

  • Sold out and not Gen2

    • +1

But it was Gen2. Gen2 is all you could buy in Australia over the past few years.

The 2019 model however is Gen3 but you can't buy that in Australia yet.

      • The first one released in 2015 was not called Shield TV, it was launched as SHIELD.
Shield TV 2017/2019 are the only 2 launched as Shield TV. But yes if you are counting that, 2019 would be Gen3. Then again, if you count chipset, 2019 is the actual Gen 2.

        • This article says otherwise

The Shield TV 2015 was released May 2015, this article saying the name "NVIDIA’s SHIELD Console Becomes SHIELD Android TV" was published 23rd April 2015.

      • @hollykryten
"But it was Gen2. Gen2 is all you could buy in Australia over the past few years."

2017 Model Nvidia Shield TV was never ever marketed as the Gen 2 model. Nothing indicating "Gen 2" or similar wording on carton or user guides etc. (I purchased mine in early 2017)

  • latest gen model was on sale ~2 weeks ago for US$129…

2017 model with controller is available in ebay for $260 for plus members

  • Would I be wrong in saying that the best value for money would be the 2017 model with controller when its on sale for less than $250? That's what I'm currently waiting for.

Or is the controller not worth it? I've read mixed reviews about the 2017 remote, but its pitfalls don't sound like a deal breaker to me. Surely paying upward of $50 for a separate (2019 model) remote is excessive?

PS: I only have a FHD TV.

    • you and your tv are the perfect candidate for a Vodafone TV @ 72 bucks

      • Thanks bliz. That does appear to be better value.

I have some questions hoping I can save research time:

I was planning to use it with kodi or plex server and also stream content from my NAS.

Currently have an old NAS (Synology DS413) but looking at upgrading to DS918+.

I also recently bought a Steelseries Stratus Duo controller to play (mostly retro) games with my 8yo son. Thats why I was looking at the NVIDIA with controller deal, to get a second controller. However what you suggest would be cheaper even if I buy a second controller separately.

Can the Vodafone unit utilize Android TV as well as the shield? And would it be fast enough to stream content from my NAS (most files .h264 @ 10mbps or less)?

PS: I already have chromecast too..

        • vftv running latest android after recent update

it doesn't do frame matching as well as the shield. i use mine for kodi, nf, disney+, youtube, vimeo and ted talks and have no dramas. <15gb mkv is flawless for me even with 802.11ac wireless. high bitrate stuff you'd be on the border and its only 100mbps for ethernet port

doesn't do kayo without sideloading and is apparently hit and miss with that. vftv thread on whirlpool will fill you in more on that

same with primevideo, needs to be sideloaded… i've had a number of syncing issues, but i've had problems with primevideo on firestick 4k too, which in aus also requires sideloading due to not being officially available in oz

vftv runs all catchup tv services very well

          runs logitech wireless keyboard/touchpad well

remote is excellent and voice searching etc is great

            @bliz:

it doesn't do frame matching as well as the shield

It doesn't do frame matching at all, which is a bit ridiculous nowadays.

doesn't do kayo without sideloading and is apparently hit and miss with that. vftv thread on whirlpool will fill you in more on that

I've got to admit since the update the experience with Kayo has drastically improved. Only early days so far but it use to flick down resolution all the time when watching the majority of events, which I use to blame Kayo for, but then using my Shield TV to test the same event and it worked without a hitch. Since the update it has been basically locked at 1080P the entire time, but will be interesting to see how it goes when AFL starts again.

remote is excellent and voice searching etc is great

Yep, the remote is damn good compared to the Shield TV 2015/2017 version, the newer version of the remote for the 2019 edition looks good though, but not worth the price for existing users.

          • +1

@bliz: Thanks for the heads up bliz & Porthos

I reckon you've converted me since I will save around 100 bucks.

Couldn't see if it supports 2 bluetooth game controllers simultaneously but I guess it will.

I hope to get several more years out of my FHD TV. By then new TVs may be even smarter so may not need a box..

  • I just want to say, Apusworld has been great. I asked if I could cancel due to the misunderstanding, and they agreed without any hassle and said they will be issuing 50 refunds due to this ozbargain post.

They've done nothing wrong, now have to do a stack of work making it right for a bunch of people, so I said I'll keep the order going.

  • Has anyone received theirs yet?
