@djrxr6 - just responding to your comment.
We are a family-owned craft beer bottle shop in Sydney's western suburbs and work hard on building and maintaining our craft beer range; we have an ever-changing selection of over 700 craft beers in our store.
This means that at times we are sitting on excess stock and hold sales to move it. Throughout the year we run approximately 4 x Warehouse Sales - Summer, Winter etc.
We also promote craft beer case deals during our regular Tuesday Happy Hour. In this circumstance, we work directly with independent craft breweries to help them move their excess stock. Like us, sitting on excess stock hurts their business.
When it comes to our sales, we are always transparent - best before and packed dates are highlighted at the top of the product descriptions. We are not out to dupe anyone. If you like the beer we have on sale, then grab it, if not move on.
Our regular customers know that running sales is just a small component of our business.
Our primary focus is on promoting Australian brewers through our Brewery Series, getting the latest seasonal releases into their hands via our Craft Beer Club, and helping breweries launch new products.
In response to taking advantage of regional customers. We charge a flat $9.95 per case delivery fee Australia-wide (exc. NT). When we send our beer to regional areas, it can cost up to $50 per case in shipping and we absorb this cost. Taking advantage of customers in remote areas is the last thing we do.
Moving onto pricing, we set our prices in line with other bottle shops otherwise we wouldn't be able to be competitive. Relying on sales to make your business profit is not a sound strategy - you'd go broke.
Lastly and most importantly - yes, drinking fresh is ALWAYS best, but there is also a place for the odd fridge filler deal provided that the beer is still drinking well.
Unfounded comments posted on public forums like OzBargain are damaging, so I felt a response was warranted here.
Sounds like you have a good independent craft retailer near you, which is great to hear!
Cheers,
Ben
