I have had a lot of issues with my gopro hero7 black. Constant freezing whenever the video is important. I Use a sandisk card compatible on gopro website. I would avoid the 7. My gopro 4 and 5 never had these issues.

I have a Hero 7 black, no issues other than the mic muting itself when its windy. The fix for that is easy just turn the wind feature off and use stereo mics. Other than that it works fine. Make sure you have installed the latest firmware update if you haven't already done so.

        • I had a lot of issues with battery life and cold weather with my Hero7. And the issues were worse with the official batteries but still present with the after market ones I was also using. Didnt seem to matter how warm I kept it, just got next to no battery life for actual filming in an alpine environment.
That said, I love the camera itself, just a shame the most times I want to use it is in those situations!

@perfectlydark: Below is Go Pro's response to this issue:

As with all lithium-ion batteries, your GoPro's internal battery operates most effectively at moderate temperatures; cold weather leads to a decrease in overall battery life. Image Stabilisation in high performance modes draws a lot of power. In cold temperatures the battery is not able to keep up. Because of this, Hyper Smooth and Standard Stabilisation are not available in the following high performance modes when operating in very cold temperatures (0°C or lower).

            2.7K 4:3 - 60/50
            4K 60/50
            4K 4:3 - 24

Here are a few tips that should maximise the battery's performance in low temperatures. It's important to note that cold-performance is relative; you may find that using one of the tips below does the trick, or you may need to experiment with combinations that suit your activity.

Keep the camera and battery warm before/during use (stow it in an interior pocket).
Leaving the camera on, in standby may be beneficial, as powering the camera off for an extended period of time will allow the camera's temperature to drop.
Minimise the use of resolutions/frame rate combinations higher than 1080p30, unless necessary. If you're not looking to take advantage of higher resolutions, or slow down your video while editing, 1080p30 is a great high-definition, energy efficient recording setting.
Minimise the use of Wi-Fi. It requires quite a bit of battery power to retain the video feed and control the camera; even more so in low temperatures.
            Hope this helps.

@paulied84: cheers! never would have considered leaving it on to keep it warm, thats a good idea

              • @perfectlydark: Yeah man I just bought one and it's pretty crap that with a Go Pro you need to do this. It makes sense if it's due to the battery tech. I had a original Go Pro and battery etc was awesome but didn't have many features like the new ones do.

Also I will be turning everything off that I don't need at the time of recording.

  • I'd wait for an 8 black with great accessories for around $470 regularly on OzBargain.

    • Just remember, lens not replaceable with the 8!

    • For 8 you have to buy whole new housing and batteries, but if you upgrade from 5, you can keep all of that and reuse it.

      • 7 is still a good choice there is no significant video quality improvement between 7 to 8

but moreover. you will not use gopro more than 2 years don't you?

i'd just buy 8 and move on to 10
