[Unobtainable Deal] Holden Final Run Out Sale: Trax ~$13,000, Equinox ~$20,000 + More

Moved to Forum: Original Link

Important stuff from the link

The Holden Trax city SUV is almost half price, with discounts ranging from $10,000 to $11,000, bringing this $23,990 model to the bargain price of about $13,000

The mid-size Holden Equinox is also a flat rate $10,750 off, or about a third off the price of the base model, bringing it from a bit over $30,000 drive-away to close to $20,000 drive-away.

The Holden Acadia seven-seat family SUV is between $11,500 and $17,000 off, between a quarter and one-third off the price of the car.

The cheapest discount is on the Holden Commodore – $7500 off – while the Astra hatch and sedan that were also discontinued last year have a flat rate of $8500 off to about $12,000 drive-away for the base models.

Additional Info (Thanks Techie4066):

Discounts on driveaway costs. All stock in remaining dealerships is expected to be depleted well before the end of 2020, with some dealers expecting to close by the end of financial year (June 30). Expected discounts from the start of March according to dealer bulletin (subject to change):

Holden Colorado (ute) - $13,000 to $17,500 off
Holden Trax (small SUV) - $10,000 to $11,000 off (down to ~$13,000 driveaway)
Holden Acadia (large seven seat SUV) - $11,500 to $17,00 off
Holden Commodore (liftback/tourer/sportwagon) - $7,500 off
Holden Astra (hatch/sedan) - $8,500 off (down to ~$12,000 base model driveaway)
Holden Equinox (medium SUV) - $10,750 off (down to ~$20,000 base model driveaway)

Opinions vary on these vehicles, but do jump on them if you have been in the market and are happy with what's available. Holden will provide servicing and spare parts for the next ten years (through a national aftersales network), ongoing call centre support, will issue recalls where necessary, and will honour existing warranties, guarantees and free scheduled servicing offers.

Mod: Article/bulletin lists the prices as drive away, but the pricing is not final and may be subject to change. As always, the deal may be removed (unobtainable) in the future, if it does not go ahead as (or close to) advertised/listed. Minor changes will be updated.

Mod: The deal become largely unobtainable. See comments. Moved to forums.

  • +1

Brands exiting the market doesn't affect resale like you would think. This happened several times before, with Daewoo and Daihatsu. Resale of those cars did not immediately plummet.

    • thats because you cant go below ZERO

      • +2

That's what was said about interest rates….(also) incorrectly.

    • +3

I hope they bring back Daihatsu. They're some of the best looking cars in Japan (the Mira Gino from a few years back is basically a clone of the old Mini). After spending some time in Japan the gf picked up an old one and it's still a great little car to drive. And super cheap to maintain and service, parts are still around even if they are coming from wreckers etc.

Hopefully the success of the Kia Picanto will make it seem like there might now be a market for tiny cars that we didn't have before.

      • +2

I've got a soft spot for Daihatsus too, my first car was a Sirion Gtvi, had a highly stressed 1.3l NA donk on it.

Went like the clappers, … at least in my 18YO brain

        • +1

+1 to the GTvi. That 1.3 could rev damn hard.

        • +1

Fun car, I had 2 of them over time, the engine was about all the chassis could almost handle :) and it made it fun to drive even in town.

        • +1

Mine was a Diahatsu Applause. All consumeables were second hand. Need new tyres cos yours are bald? Grab a set of 5 tyres from the discard pile for $20. Oil? Wait til dad was servicing his car and pour that oil into my car. Brakes? Thats cute, just stop accelerating earlier.

My god teenage years was nuts.

Loved that car though, Called her Die (everyone thought it was Di as in Dianna)

        • I'm curious about the 1.3l, though tbh the Sirion with a 1.0 3cyl is already great fun.
Pretty slow, but does not feel like it at all. I always feel like I'm blasting down the road, but a look at the speedo always puts me waay under the limit.

      • +11

All this talk of resale seems to neglect the fact that you paid $12k for what is a $20k car…

If I paid $12k for an Astra, I expect the car to fetch maybe $7k after 3yrs, maybe $4k after 5yrs.

If you paid $20k for a Corolla then resale is proportional to what you originally spent.

This sale is conditional on basically buying a Holden, running it into the ground thru the length of your warranty and if its still good at the end, then keep driving it OR… sell it for whatever you get.

I would still think a $12k Astra after 10 yrs if well kept and in good order is still a $3k car.

So you've basically spent say $10k on a car in 10yrs… $1,000 a year. That's cheap motoring. The avg. Australian wage is $1k a week.

And yet people still go on about resale??? Its all gravy if it finishes the warranty period with little issue.

End of the day, you spent $12k on a new warranted car. Even though this is a Holden, I expect it to run fault free thru the warranty and beyond with just regular servicing.

I focus on the Astra but it still applies to the other models to a degree.

        • +1

It also neglects that resale prices also depend on what else is available in the market, not just on whatever cheap price you happened to pay for it.

The brand will lose value and the overall used market will reverberate for a while. But assuming things are back to normal in in 3 years, someone with $10k for a used car might still consider a 3 year old Astra a nicer buy than a 7 year old Corolla, or whatever else they could afford.

You might actually do quite well buying one now and selling it within 5 years, while it still feels new. The main risks would be if local support really collapsed within that time, or if too many other people who bought cheap Holdens (or another heavily discounted car this year) priced in depreciation based on their purchase price when selling.
But even then, as you say, as long as the wheels stay on there's not too much to lose from the total purchase price.

  • Equinox any good?

    • +2

I quite like the looks of the Equinox and I would think its a star buy at $20k if you want a 5 seat medium CUV.

I dont like 1.5 turbos and I think the interior is yankee trash BUT I mean its not like a $30k Xtrail RAV4 CX5 CRV Hundai Kia thing is all that great… and by grabthar's hammer what a savings…. $10k in my pocket goes a long way.

You can be an idiot like me and the rest of the world and buy a $30k plus Asian CUV and then pay it off slowly I guess….

    • I drove the equinox as a rental whilst my car was being fixed.

Honestly I thought it was a terrible car both externally and internally at the RRP.

The interior looked so dated. My wife thought it was designed by "tasteless Americans". I have no idea what she meant but that always stuck with me.

With these potential savings, I would definitely consider it so long as the warranty was honoured.

      • +9

And they probably wanted to sell a Trax for $17k now instead of $13k later

wouldn't matter if you want to hang on to cars for 5-10 years. by then they're worth shit all anyway.

      • +6

You know not everyone wants or needs to waste money on a new car every other year…

So yeah take your cheapskate rubbish out of here.

        • +1

What forum are you mate? you lost?

I'd glady call myself a cheapskate. I'm not interested in spending any more than I have to. Maybe you disagree then why are you here.

          have a great day

@tonyjzx: The forum where people don't insult others? You lost?

I chose to pay my new house off I bought when I was 18, paid off 2 others since.

Didn't go waste money on cars like many guys that age….

            Everyone has their own priorities.

So yeah. Keep your opinions to yourself.

                  • @John Kimble: Yeah ok. Others don't like it either.

amazing how one comment about myself upsets you, I apologise for any offence met I guess…

                • -2

                  @scuderiarmani: ok boomer

                  • @tonyjzx: Oh that typical reply.

How embarrassing driving a car older than 2 years….. What on earth will others think of me!

            • +1

@scuderiarmani: also think about how out of touch you are in 2020

you bought a house when you were 18 - I mean welcome to to last century boomer

how relevant is even mentioning that sort of thing in a thread about cheap $12k cars

i mean really how relevant is spending $12k on a car when that wont even make a fraction of your stamp duty, deposit

if ever there was a guy who typified this meme:

              https://imgur.com/gallery/Odg1OrZ

are you going to complain about kids and smartphones next?

              • @tonyjzx: No mate. I can choose to spend my money however the (profanity) I want.

My family and close relatives that buy cars in the manner you suggest are all nowhere in life coincidentally. Yet the others… Well they are better off.

Stop being so concerned about how others view you.

I bought my house in 2001. Everyone has their own priorities. Congratulations yours is cars.

                • +1

@scuderiarmani: Yeah I'm really into cars if I'm scoping out $12k hatches mate.

Congrats on having the thickest skin out there (mod: personal attack edited).

I dont care much for you or your relos or your painful boasting about how great your life is.

I'm not about to give my life story as I dont boast to strangers on this internet. You do you though.

                  • @tonyjzx: Not boasting mate. But I dont need to put down people who choose to drive older cars.

Parents drive 20 year old commodores, Inc my older one, very happily spending money on things that matter to them instead.

                    • +2

@scuderiarmani: That's cool. You realise I was talking about myself when I said "cheapskate" and I'm focussing on $12 astras so I dont know why anyone would get upset… you really have to think about why you took something so to heart. It aint normal.

So what if you really are a cheapskate? is that so bad?

I also find it wildy out of touch that people can come here and state that you shouldnt buy a cheap $12k car because it'll stop you from being like this guy who bought a house at 18 y.o almost 20yrs ago.

This is a patently impossible dream in 2020.

Its so brutally cruel to state that to kids these days.

I bought my first place when I was in my late 20s and even that I find a bit embarrasing to state knowing the state of the housing market today but again, you do you.

                      • @tonyjzx: Well maybe you shouldn't buy cars every 2 years? My first car I purchased myself lasted me around 12 or so years….

Some go on holidays. Some buy cars. Some save money.

Think back in 2001… I could buy a 50k SS or I could build a $110k house and rent it out…. Luckily my parents made sure I did the right thing.

                        • @scuderiarmani: I never stated I would buy a car every two years.

I would never quote my privilege and say I bought property back when every mug could do it and sit on it now and then rub peoples' noses into it.

Its cruel say you could buy property twenty years ago and that's a result you not buying a car instead and thinking that's "lesson" relevant to kids trying to pick up a cheap hatch today.

                          • @tonyjzx: I have a young cousin whose 18/19, probably had 10 different cars already. I've had 3 and I'm 37.

Can tell you his dad, who actually has 2 highly collectible cars himself, isn't exactly happy about those choices.

Obviously being in SA makes property easier too though so I'll give that.

  • +4

Feel very sorry for the one selling their used ones of these :(

    • Imagine if you had just purchased one of these cars in the last couple of weeks!

  • +2

The 10 yr warranty for parts will be a myth. I do not have a copy of the specific regulations pertaining to availability of parts. But it is along the lines of CRITICAL parts, fenders, bumpers, headlamps, radiators, and the like. However my time in the industry has seen this not to be the case with other GENERAL parts, as these are consumed they can become unavailable, and there is no pressure on manufactures and importers to make non-critical parts available. So the likes of center consoles, window switches, AC fan motors and a whole raft of parts will run out in 3 - 6 years and then the fun begins trying to source second hand parts!.

    • +1

Trax is sold in the US and Europe with a Chev badge so should be plenty of spares other than anything that might be specifically RHD.

      • This ^

Plenty of cars no longer being sold here where parts are commonly interchangeable with overseas models.

Shipping car parts from overseas isn't anywhere near as painful as it used to be.

Plus, you don't always have to go genuine. Decent 3rd party parts manufacturers (AC Delco etc) will continue to make parts as long as there is demand for them.

  • -1

Glad to see Holden go as they are scumbags when it comes to overpriced servicing.

    • +4

though that's like any place for servicing. Also you don't need to go to the dealer's servicing centre to maintain warranty. You can go to any registered mechanic.

      • +2

Some dealers now realise they have to be competitive for servicing. I have to replace front and rear brakes on my European car. RAC quoted me 10% higher than the dealer. I told RAC that but they don't do price beat. So I proceeded with the dealer, and got a free loan car as well as car wash as bonus. Don't automatically assume it's cheaper outside the dealer, get quotes.

    • Cant be as bad as the numpties at hyundai mt gravatt

        • +1

Any deals for camera, gun and vice?

    • I think you'd pick up a Colorado for that, Acadia I think will be ~50k. It's still much cheaper than the equivalent Kluger, CX9 etc.

  • +9

Gumtree: Can you do Astra for $20.00?
    Holden: Yes.
    Gumtree: <ghosted>

  • A lease proposition on a Colorado is pretty tempting. Resale won't matter bugger all and the monthly payments will be low as on a brand new car…

  • +2

$7000 for Astra and we are talking.

holy (profanity)….12 grand for a brand new Astra.
    but it's an Astra.

    • I know, I didn't even want one till like an hour ago :(

Gotta convince wife she can go back to a smaller car….

      • what does she drive now?

        • VE Series 2.

Having a pram and baby seat eventually was a big reason to moving to a bigger car, from her old POS Pulsar she had when I met her and embarrassingly drove around….

Just gotta appeal to her ego… Last time Bluetooth touch screen…. Her pulsar was an after market MP3 cd player… Maybe I'll go the Android Auto and red car route…

          • @scuderiarmani: noooo not the VE!

if she had an SUV, yeah ditch it, but it's a VE (imo)

            • +1

@tdw: I'm so anti 4WD SVU so it'd go against me buying one ever.

              Half the fuel… I guess that's something.

But yeah VE is probably infinitely more reliable and cheaper to fix…. Even if 10 years old. Only ever replaced a battery in the 7 or so years/150,000ish kms of owning.
