A nice-looking pair of Julius Marlow shows from Amazon, with quite good reviews. RRP $149.95. Available in black or brown/tan, with most of the advertised sizes (US 7-14) having black +/- brown available at time of posting.

My previous pair of Julius Marlow shoes lasted about 3 years with daily wearing, so not a bad run, although by the time I decided to replace them, they were cracked, chuffed, scratched and the side stitching was coming apart. They’re not known to be the best or longest-lasting pair of business shoes, but at $49, I reckon they’re worth a shot!

As usual, don’t forget cashback!

One look at the sole tells you this shoe isn't worth it - looks bloody slippery!

    • +1

The description states it has a rubber outsole; there is a review on the Myer site which suggests the rubber outsole improves their longevity, presumably making things also less slippery, although not specifically mentioned.

      • +3

Not the material I'd be concerned about - its the lack of treads

    • +1

This is my biggest pet peeve with dress shoes. It's like they were designed to go ice skating with.
Have you tried any which have good grip?

      • -1
      • +2

My previous pair of Julius Marlow’s (I think the style was ‘Honest) had good grip (they’re the crystal sole ones).

I buy a pair of business shoes every 2-3 years; the current ones I’m wearing are Florsheim Carl, which also have good grip and look very stylish; have been wearing them for about 6 months and would highly recommend.

        Rockport.

Worst shoes ever. Not worth $4.99

Cheap nasty "leather" that peels away in no time.
There's way,way better shoes out there for the money

You know what they say about men with small feet ?

      • +11

        They wear small shoes

        • -3

          and they have small toes…

  • -1

    Where are these made?

      • +1

Is it an actual decent brand made in China or generic Chinese crap with a brand name slapped on it and marked up 10x?

        • +1

Terrible brand, some JM products despite having the 'leather' tag are actually Pig Leather.
try getting compliance checks in a large manufacturer like that

        • +1

Julius Marlow make a decent shoe - certainly not the best of the best, but not crap either.

      • Oh no….

        • Where would you like them to be made? Thailand, Cambodia or Vietnam?

          • +1

            @serpserpserp: Australia champ

            • +2

@frostman: Where can I buy $49 Australian made shoes?

              • -3

@serpserpserp: Find $200 to save in 12 months, perhaps skip a few takeaway meals?
Maybe don't buy junk food for 2 weeks and do your back a favour

                • @frostman: So no answer on that one champ?

Maybe I can just learn to do my tax returns properly and save some cash there to buy some sweet shoes?

                  • -1

@serpserpserp: You couldnt find dirt on me so you dug up a post 4 years ago which was asking a legitimate question on whether Gross Income via a TFN is pre-populated in the accountants software or not.

Clearly my post asking you to abstain from Junk Food has hit home for you to stoop so low.

  • Is it suitable for someone who has wide feet?

    • I find Julius Marlow tend to be on the wider side in general, but best to try in-store to be sure

  • Black completely sold out
    Brown - 11, 11.5, 7 only

  • +2

Last set of Julius Marlow shoes I had were barely 3 months old and both soles split across the ball of the foot, on a wet day, while I was job hunting/dropping resumes. Never again.

    • +3

      They're total garbage.

      • Could not agree more.

  • +1

    No size 8…errrr

    • Sold out just in an hour heh

  • Jeez the went quick!

  • Yeah not seeing any stock of any size or colour anymore :(

  • +1

    looks nasty!

  • No real human sizes available. Good luck to you if you have fairy feet.

  • Damn, no more sizes :(

  • just stick with RM Williams .. these cheap shoes are more hassles than their worth

  • +3

Found Julius Marlow to be of poor quality (would only get ~1year life)…. In fact they were the last pair I ever owned before I saved up and bought a pair of handmade shoes instead for ~$380. Comfiest shoes I've ever owned and lasted 4 years now, still going strong (and when the sole wears, you can easily get it replaced). No deal for me.

  • Always see this brand in shoes stores in the city and they don't look too great for their prices… Really flat insoles aren't comfortable at all. At $49 looks okay but I prefer comfort over affordability when it comes to business shoes!

  • Good deal OP

Think we need to get across that all these brands are rubbish quality.

Julius Marlow, Hush Puppies, Windsor Smith, Aquila, Florsheim, Blaw, Wild Rhino, Kenji etc.

All the regulars you find in myer/DJs and lined in shopping centres.

They're all made to absolute lowest spec possible and all worth about $50-100 a pair.

The key to buying these is accepting they are rubbish, getting roughly 12 months out of them pain free and not having to worry about maintaining them before buy a new pair every year.

We don't make good quality dress/work shoes/boots in Australia, not anymore.

Couple stragglers like Rossi/Baxter/RM Williams who make a handful of shoes here, or import the goods and stick them together here in the $250~ (Rossi/Baxter) bracket that are constructed better than the above. RM Williams in a similar vein but prohibitively priced since bought out by LV.

    • Trent Nathan is fairly decent

      • Trent Nathan is terrible quality its a house brand for Myer, made in the same factories as other Myer house brands. Also Trent Nathan will be discontinued very soon Myer is reducing the range significantly.

        • Have you actually owned a pair? They were the only shoe I looked at that have leather lining and upper along with a man made sole. So they are definitely not terrible quality

          • +2

@PAOK11: I havent owned a pair but working for Myer specifically in the Mens Shoes Department for the past 8 years I have seen the quality getting worse and worse. They use to use some calf/full grain leather around 5-6 years ago now most if not all are either pig leather or book binder leather. We have also had issues with the soles on the inside and had to write of at least two dozen of them.

            • @nobby148: Oh, Might explain why I have scuff marks everywhere. Fortunately no problems with the sole so far

  • If Julius Marlow are crap what are some ok alternatives? Or are you looking at over $200-300?

    • See my post below

  • +4

Avoid this rubbish if you're serious about a corporate/professional job.

You get 12 month's wear out of them and then; they hyper-stretch inside, leather fades, and excess and unnatural crinkles form on the top.

It's ok if you're comparing them to Giodarno or whatever that shop is that gives you 3 pairs for $149.

There were reports that some Julius Marlow products even use Pig or Kangaroo leather (not pointing to this one in specific).

Anyway as discussed avoid if you can, they're also super uncomfortable and 12 months later you will have a bad back - WARNED!

best bang for buck (ignoring the $49 current sale)
