Kangaroo meat, cheap, healthy and better for the environment?

So the discussion of plant based meat alternatives and their benefits lead me back to thinking about trying some kangaroo meat, a price check reveals it is cheaper than beef, it is low in fat and high in protein, is "free range", Kangaroo's are better for climate change than beef, and due to being wild as opposed to farmed, cause less issues with the environment.

I am thinking of substituting a few mince based dishes (Nachos & Bolognaise) to start with and see if the family notices/complains.

Does anyone here eat skippy, what are your reasons and any tips or good recipes for using it?

  • The mince is great with an (un)healthy dose of taco seasoning. You can hardly tell the difference.

  • You can get a permit in Tassie to kill Wallaby. Apparently farmers kill hundreds of thousands a year. You could probably save a fortune if you weren't precious about eating it.

  • +1

I have tarted using Kangaroo mince for making chilli con carne as only $10/kg from Coles. High protein and nutritional value, low in fat.

Cooking it in a pressure cooker it looses all the gamey taste and softens up. I can't distinguish it from beef mince cooked this way, the chilli con carne spices also help mask the taste.

Not a fan of it cooked regularly or with a tomato based sauce etc as still maintains the game taste. Also smells revolting when browning the meat.

Not a huge fan of roo steaks and they are harder to cook right but as a one off every now and again they are ok.

  • My attempts to prepare kangaroo meat have failed. The meat requires a lot of seasoning, and maybe marinating, to become edable (to my taste). I have also tried to eat in restaurants and from My Muscle Chef meals and, again, I didn't like.

  • erratic in quality…but can be outstanding in flavour. A fillet piece sourced from a good butcher in Brisbane and cooked by a friend was just superb. so much variety in diet etc ..I'm unsure of what to look for.
I do enjoy game though so its probably not to everyone's taste.

  • We should eat more pigeon

    • Hawks can't be wrong
